This work reports chemometrics of the three solvents [petroleum ether, chloroform and methanol] in the in-vitro screening of Plasmodium falciparum and Trypanosome brucei b. The Response Surface Methodology [RSM] method based on a second order and three variables Box-Behnken Design (BBD) was employed to obtain the optimal combination of extraction conditions. The extraction process parameters of the fruit of Carica papaya were optimized by BBD so as to get maximal yield of bio-actives. Different solvent ratios were used to achieve different response optimized by chemometric. For the in-vitro screening of Plasmodium falciparum and Trypanosome brucei b., the extracts of Carica papaya fruit were subjected to assay procedures to see their viability. Summarily, the 3D response surface plot and the contour plot derived from the mathematical models were applied to determine the optimal conditions. Under the optimized conditions, the experimental value of 77.97% viability on Plasmodium f. was in close agreement with the value predicted (77.97 ± 0.01 %) by the model and 82.86 ± 1.10%was predicted for Trypanosome brucei b. with an experimented value of 83.48%; showing close correlation between the predicted and experimental values. Considering RSM studies, it was found that the mixture of petroleum ether, chloroform and methanol solvents at a ratio of 55 mL: 27.50 mL: 17.50 mL gave an optimum viability on the in-vitro screening. Hence, the polarity of solvent affects the yield of bioactive compounds in the plant material. \u0000

The heterogeneous transesterification option is regularly employed considering its enormous advantages. This research sampled abundant and locally available and renewable materials; palm kernel (for extraction of oil) and clay (employed as a catalyst). The clay was calcined at 400 oC, modified using 10 % by weight H2SO4 and NaOH respectively, characterised by BET and X-ray diffraction and then used for transesterification with the extracted palm kernel oil to produce biodiesel in a 1: 9 oil to methanol ratio and 10 % catalyst dosage of the acid (H2SO4) and alkali (NaOH) modified clay respectively. The results show biodiesel yields of 66.67 % and 73.33 % respectively. The physicochemical characterisation of the biodiesels obtained had values that conformed with ATSM values for good biodiesel, while their GC-MS analyses confirmed the presence of many fatty acid methyl esters which are responsible for biodiesel production. X-ray diffraction and BET analyses respectively showed crystallinity and presence of some minerals with surface area (65.52 – 72.43 m2g-1), pore size (0.997 Ao) and pore volume (24.54 – 28.04 cm3/g) for the clay. These abundant environmentally friendly biofuels that are economically produced, show very good prospects of replacing fossil fuels. \u0000

This raises concern for consumers' health due to the potentially deleterious effects of pesticides on animals, particularly humans. This study examined the levels of pesticide residues using a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) system and heavy metal elements concentration using Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) in four food crops (Sesame, Millet, Rice, and Guinea corn) cultivated in (Gwio-Kura) Gashua and Hadejia towns in Nigeria. The results disclosed that Sesame was the only crop with Dichlorvos from both Gashua and Hadejia, surpassing the WHO's limit for pesticide residue concentrations, and that the Hadejia samples had higher levels than the Gashua samples. The study also detected traces of Cadmium (Cd), Lead (Pb), Nickel (Ni), and Manganese (Mn) in the crops, but they were below the permissible intake levels established by FAO/WHO. However, Arsenic (As) and Chromium (Cr) exceeded the FAO/WHO limits and may entail serious health problems such as kidney damage and cancer. Mercury (Hg) was not detected in any of the crops. Our findings suggest health authorities monitor and regulate heavy elements intake in food crops, especially those with high toxic contamination, to prevent adverse health effects such as the kidney disease on humans and animals, currently prevalent in the area. \u0000

The prevalence of PTEs in the environment poses serious threat to human health. Anthropogenic activities contribute to elevation of PTEs contents in soils. In this study, a total of 24 soil samples collected from six study areas within Port Harcourt city were analysed to determine level of some elements (As, Cd, Cr, Pb and Ni) following the acid digestion methods. Samples were taken from different soil profiles ranging from topsoil (0 – 30 cm) to sub-soil (30 – 60 cm). Each sample was subjected to three acid digestion procedures namely: aqua regia, reversed aqua regia and multi-acid attack. For purposes of quality control, levels of the elements of interest in the digested samples along with blanks were measured using atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS). A wide range of total concentrations of the toxic elements was found, with high level of concentration obtained in the topsoil. The proportion of elements released by the multi- acid attack method was higher than those of aqua regia and reversed aqua regia methods. This finding suggests that the heavy metals bound to silicate minerals are not easily dissolved in simple mineral acids. A correlation analysis revealed a strong association between Pb and total organic carbon (r = 0.950012), indicating that the source of Pb contaminants may be derived from organic matter contents. The potential health risk associated with PTEs indicated non-carcinogenic risk for children and carcinogenic risk for adults living in the flooded areas. Further monitoring of flooded areas in Port Harcourt metropolis is recommended for other environmental contaminants beside the PTEs monitored. \u0000

The study was aimed at solvothermal synthesis and characterization of terephthalic acid-based Metal-Organic Frameworks and their catalytic application in biodiesel production. Three MOFs of Cu-, Fe-, and Cr-based were solvothermally synthesized, characterized and applied as catalysts in biodiesel production using ethanol and oil extracted from Yellow Oleander seeds. The MOFs were synthesized using terephthalic acid as the linker and copper (II), iron (III) and chromium (III) nitrates as metal ion sources. Each of the synthesized MOFs showed high melting point exceeding 360 oC. Microscopic view and powder X- ray diffraction analysis indicated Cu-MOF to be crystalline with numerous sharp peaks while those for Fe- and Cr-MOFs were amorphous. A comparison of the FT-IR spectra of the ligand and those of the MOFs confirmed the presence of the ligand in the synthesized MOFs. In the absence of a catalyst, the transesterification was not achieved. However, in the presence of the more crystalline Cu-MOF as catalyst resulted to high yield (83.33%) and in a shorter time compared to the less crystalline Fe- (33.33%) and Cr- (25.00%) MOFs. Thus, catalytic ability of the MOFs were in the order: Cu-MOF > Fe-MOF > Cr-MOF. Hence MOFs especially Cu-MOFs can be applied as catalyst in biodiesel production.
