Fifteen bottleneck activations were identified and their reproducible features were described. Bottlenecks became active in the vicinity of on-ramps and off-ramps and once a bottleneck became active, its queue discharge flow was reproducible across multiple activations and across multiple days. The analysis tools used in this study were transformed curves of cumulative vehicle count and cumulative time-mean velocity. These cumulative curves provided the resolution necessary to reveal the spatial and temporal aspects of dynamic freeway traffic flow phenomena. With increasing availability of reliable freeway sensor data, it is important to continue the systematic empirical analysis of freeways in different countries with varying geometric configurations. The results of this research would assist with all aspects of traffic flow modeling, operations and control.","PeriodicalId":153203,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 2005 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems, 2005.","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123036821","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents results of a feasibility study called VITUS-1. Among others, one aim of VITUS-I was to compare image analysis methods for robust object detection, tracking and incident detection. Image quality improvements were shown by using digital camera technology instead of state-of-the-art analogue CCTV. To improve image quality and robustness of existing image analysis methods, requirements on several camera properties were defined. We want to sensitise primarily tunnel operators and tunnel CCTV experts that commercial image analysis systems usually do not claim such requirements, e.g. requirements on resolution. This paper shows with a simple camera model that a robust detection of test objects is hardly feasible with typical tunnel CCTV (PAL resolution, 20/spl deg/ viewing angle, 212m camera distance). As a consequence, the specifications of tunnel CCTV should be adjusted to the needs of image analysis systems. Simple experiments with real video data show the applicability of the camera model.","PeriodicalId":153203,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 2005 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems, 2005.","volume":"506 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116383973","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective is to determine the position and velocity of vehicles ahead of the mobile platform, in order to make possible the prediction of their position in future instants of time. This problem is addressed by modeling a 3D dynamic system, where both the acquisition platform and the tracked vehicles are represented in a state vector. From measurements obtained in every frame, this state vector is re-estimated using an unscented Kalman filter, instead of the extended Kalman filter used in previous works. Assuming that vehicles progress on a flat surface, a novel model of their dynamics is proposed, which explicitly considers constraints on the velocity. With respect to previous approaches, this model improves tracking reliability, since the estimation of unfeasible states is avoided. Experiments on real sequences display promising results, although a more systematic evaluation of the system should be done.","PeriodicalId":153203,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 2005 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems, 2005.","volume":"114 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117079000","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although floating car data can provide traveling time along road network precisely, using such on-car devices are not cost effective compared to infrastructure sensors. Therefore, we have developed a vision sensor which is able to measure travel time between the neighboring intersections, installing a single camera at each intersection. This vision sensor covers whole the area of an intersection, and it detects an image region of vehicle each by each, classifies vehicle types and colors, and perform DP-matching to the two sequences of vehicles between the neighboring intersections to identify the same vehicles.","PeriodicalId":153203,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 2005 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems, 2005.","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126156449","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The promotion of carpooling is a very challenging but, at the same time, a very efficient task. With WIGeoPOOL an exchange service for carpools is been developed, that makes carpooling as easy as possible. With the integration of the arrangement of carpools in a multimodal traffic and traveller information system, WIGeoPOOL is a major innovation. The GIS-based, intelligent searching algorithm presents the various travelling possibilities as well as the arrangement of carpools to the user in an easy way, and what is more, it compares the single modes in an objective way. Through the open architecture of the system and interfaces it's possible to use all types of mobile devices in addition to the traditional Internet PC. Even the integration into navigational systems is possible. Under the frame of the R&D-programme 12, intelligent infrastructure, of the Austrian ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology, WIGeoPOOL is being developed and will be presented to the public in September 2005. Moreover, the integration with the Offboard navigation will be demonstrated at the beginning of 2006. Multimodal traffic and traveller information systems clearly have a positive influence on the traveller's behaviour and mode choice. Transport modes, which are environmentally friendly and more efficient, profit the most.","PeriodicalId":153203,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 2005 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems, 2005.","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126554103","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The new control system incorporates an adaptive data and information fusion approach based on optimization of an objective function. This data driven approach takes historical data and, using the objective function, extracts knowledge about the specific reliability of each algorithm under varying traffic conditions. The extracted knowledge is integrated into a flexible framework incorporating a logit probability model. The trained system produces a control decision for each display, taking into consideration neighboring detectors. The implemented objective function can be used for assessing, optimizing, and monitoring the performance of line control system as a whole as well as of individual incident detection and state estimation algorithms. The system has been implemented and installed in a Munich traffic management center. Following calibration on 2 months of data, the system was tested for 2 months on-line in open-loop mode. During this test, the optimized LCS framework out-performed the previously implemented control according to several measures of quality, such as detection/false alarm rates and the objective function.","PeriodicalId":153203,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 2005 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems, 2005.","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123586002","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traditional conveyor belt monitoring focuses on catastrophic failure. Failure alarms and maintenance decisions are submitted separately without revealing relationships of monitored events. Causal modeling such like Bayesian methodology provides intuitive and mathematically sound tools to understand complex relations between uncertain variables and failure causes. However to derive inference knowledge for validating causal modeling is difficult. This paper introduces a causal modeling methodology based on Bayesian inference to diagnose failure situation and decide relative maintenance operations for large-scale conveyor belt systems. Fuzzy logic is applied to estimate the likelihood density function which is usually hard to be obtained for causal inferences. This methodology is applied as a maintenance decision-making process in intelligent conveyor belt monitoring system. An application of indicating the main failure cause and suggesting maintenance operation for conveyor belt emergency braking system is presented.","PeriodicalId":153203,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 2005 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems, 2005.","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131479357","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For many applications, these models must solve the dynamic traffic assignment problem - i.e., to find the optimal path choices for all vehicles in the network - within a reasonable margin of error in the shortest possible time. This paper presents an iterative algorithm for the dynamic (time dependent) user-optimal assignment problem. The algorithm produces time-dependent assignments which, when used in a traffic simulation model, result in experienced path travel times that approximately satisfy user-optimal conditions. The model is tested on a small but challenging network, for which convergence (to equilibrium) results are compared with those obtained using a variant of the method of successive averages (MSA). The model results are also examined in detail by comparison with the exact equilibrium queue lengths determined analytically. The proposed model is found to perform very well under these tests, and to converge faster than the MSA.","PeriodicalId":153203,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings. 2005 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems, 2005.","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126288307","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
