That tool allows parallel application development, performance analysis and will provide the configuration of several parallel and distributed architectural models. The tool's user will be able to simulate distributed or shared memory use, as well as to define the inter-processor communication topology and protocol. In the current version, the tool already provides send and receive communication primitives for message exchange and topology in shared bus. When compared to the other similar tools, the SMS has all the SimpleScalar advantages. Thus, the SMS becomes a low cost alternative for research and education in development and performance analysis of parallel applications.","PeriodicalId":152455,"journal":{"name":"37th Annual Simulation Symposium, 2004. It is a user-driven Web-based application tool. Currently, CSEO provides an integrated environment for multi-scale modeling of complex reacting systems. A unique feature of CSEO is in its framework that allows data to flow from one application to another in a transparent manner. A particular example is demonstrated to show how results from fundamental quantum chemistry simulations are used to calculate thermodynamic and kinetic properties of a chemical reaction, which subsequently are used in the simulation of a combustion reactor. Advantages, disadvantages, and future prospects of a Web-based simulation approach are then discussed. CSEO can be accessed at http://cseo.net.","PeriodicalId":152455,"journal":{"name":"37th Annual Simulation Symposium, 2004. In this work: a) we propose extended versions of two data propagation protocols for such networks: the sleep-awake probabilistic forwarding protocol (SW-PFR) and the hierarchical threshold sensitive energy efficient network protocol (H-TEEN). These non-trivial extensions improve the performance of the original protocols, by introducing sleep-awake periods in the PFR protocol to save energy, and introducing a hierarchy of clustering in the TEEN protocol to better cope with large networks; b) we implemented the two protocols and performed an extensive simulation comparison of various important measures of their performance with a focus on energy consumption; c) we investigate in detail the relative advantages and disadvantages of each protocol; and d) we discuss a possible hybrid combination of the two protocols towards optimizing certain goals.","PeriodicalId":152455,"journal":{"name":"37th Annual Simulation Symposium, 2004. Most current works are targeted towards running an existing (old architecture) binary version of a complex application on a newer architecture and so availability of resources is not a problem. In this paper we propose a technique called RABIT for emulating a newer architecture's binary on an older one. RABIT will allow the consumers to emulate the applications developed for newer hardware on their older machines by incurring some performance trade-offs. This way the needy consumers can take advantage of the newer software features on their existing machines before they decide to upgrade them to later models. In situations where the newer hardware is in place, our technique can be used to run applications redundantly on the older machine for dependability analysis. It also provides the CPU architects with an instruction-level simulator to test the design and stability of a new CPU before the new hardware is actually in place. RABIT's design consists of a translator, an interpreter and a set of operating system services. To deal with the less amount of resources like registers in the older architecture as compared to the newer ones, we present a new register allocation algorithm. The feasibility of the technique is established by simulating RABIT for its performance.","PeriodicalId":152455,"journal":{"name":"37th Annual Simulation Symposium, 2004. In this paper, we focus upon the aggregation/disaggregation (A/D) paradigm to ensure consistency in state updates between federates simulating objects at various levels of resolution, and enhance the performance of the data distribution management (DDM) in large-scale distributed simulation. We also examine the scalability of an aggregation/disaggregation scheme for several DDM implementations and study its performance evaluation using an extensive set of simulation experiments.","PeriodicalId":152455,"journal":{"name":"37th Annual Simulation Symposium, 2004. These measures have included, but are not limited to improved data and behavior representations, advanced development architectures, and enhanced graphics technologies. Another remarkable concept used to improve the performance and capabilities has been the use of distributed computing techniques, dubbed distributed simulation. A new and potentially high impacting expansion of distributing simulation involves tying that methodology with that of selective fidelity, a concept that allows a simulation system to modify its own level of fidelity based on what aspects of the simulation are important or interesting to a user or observer. Using multiple simulation systems tied together by a run-time infrastructure (RTI), the software implementation of the high level architecture (HLA), a selective fidelity federation can be implemented by changing ownership of simulation objects between federates, depending on what aspects of the simulation are important. This paper describes the theoretical and implementation details involved with building such a system. Included in this description are explanations of the concepts of fidelity and selective fidelity, a summary of HLA and the RTI, a detailed account of the architecture necessary to implement such a scheme, and a section predicting possible applications for such an idea.","PeriodicalId":152455,"journal":{"name":"37th Annual Simulation Symposium, 2004. Solemn extends Sparc Sulima allowing it to simulate at user-level an unmodified Solaris executable: 32 or 64-bit, and statically or dynamically linked. This yields some advantages over both complete machine simulators and traditional system call emulation. To do this, Solemn manages the virtual address space and files that the simulated program requires, and intercepts and emulates system call traps. Another novel feature is the emulation of memory mapped files. We describe some of the implementation details of Solemn, including its memory management architecture and portability.","PeriodicalId":152455,"journal":{"name":"37th Annual Simulation Symposium, 2004. End-host multicast shifts the burden of group-communication support from network routers to the host. End-host multicasting is required when IP multicasting is not available. The difficulty in using this technique is that it requires additional resource consumption when compared to native IP multicasting. This work presents several novel end-host multicast algorithms designed for peer-to-peer real-time simulation systems. Our techniques utilize application level admission control in order to more fairly balance the communication load in the physical network. We propose and evaluate an adaptive routing policy to find overflow paths between end-hosts and simulation agents placed within the system. We also present several heuristics for routing tree construction, including a simulated annealing approach. We have evaluated our methods through simulation, and the results show that our methods achieve performance similar to optimal IP multicasting.","PeriodicalId":152455,"journal":{"name":"37th Annual Simulation Symposium, 2004. It presents a survey on the requirements needed for such task considering previous work in the area. The survey encloses the following topics: the modeling approach; the requirements for trustworthy performance and QoS analysis; and the choice of the simulation environment where the models will be implemented. The paper also presents a new ATM network model implemented in a communication systems simulation environment called SimNT 2.0. The network model covers SVC routing and management, ATM traffic management functions, packet and cell transport/processing and client behavior. The TM functions taken into account include per-VC queuing, weighted fair-share scheduling, traffic shaping, effective bandwidth connection admission control, selective cell discarding, leaky-bucket traffic policing and traffic contract configuration and negotiation. Numerical results briefly demonstrate the network model.","PeriodicalId":152455,"journal":{"name":"37th Annual Simulation Symposium, 2004.
