However, limitation on beacon size prescribed by standardization bodies implies that only information about 3-4 surrounding vehicles can be piggybacked in a beacon packet. In most traffic situations, the number of vehicles within transmission range is much larger than 3-4, implying that multi-hop forwarding strategies must be devised to select which neighboring vehicle's information to include in a transmitted beacon. In this paper, we investigate the effectiveness of different multi-hop forwarding strategies in delivering fresh situational information to surrounding vehicles. Effectiveness is estimated in terms of both average information age and probability of experiencing a situational-awareness blackout of at least 1 sec. Both metrics are estimated as a function of the hop distance from the transmitting vehicle. The investigation is based on extensive simulations whose multi-hop communication performance is corroborated by real-world measurements. The results show that network-coding based strategies substantially improve forwarding performance as compared to a randomized strategy, reducing the average information age of up to 60%, the blackout probability of two orders of magnitude, and providing a performance similar to that of an idealized strategy in which complete situational information is included in the beacon.","PeriodicalId":152372,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference","volume":"259 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123041032","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It exploits the advantages of various sensors for the acquisition and interpretation of the vehicles' environment. Sophisticated ACC functionalities, like collision avoidance on highways, require a high level of reliability and accuracy in the estimation of inter-vehicular distance. This distance can be measured by different type of sensors such as Lidar. In order to improve the reliability of the measured distance and adjust the speed of the ego vehicle, our strategy is to use all sources of information available in a collaborative approach, such as the transmitted speed and global positioning information from the front vehicle, and to validate the data given by these different information sources. To illustrate the potential of this approach, we present in this paper an example of a collaborative ACC developed on a French simulator Pro-SiVIC and discuss on its performance.","PeriodicalId":152372,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127675218","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

LTE-Direct is expected to be used in future LTE-A networks for unicast Proximity Services, and has not been envisioned so far for broadcast transmissions. In this paper, we propose an eMBMS-inspired mechanism to allocate LTE-Direct resources for dedicated broadcast/multicast vehicular safety communications. The mechanism does not require any connection procedure for LTE-Direct broadcast transmissions, and proposes to reserve identical LTE downlink resources over multiple eNB for dedicated communications between UEs. We apply this concept to the periodic broadcast of BSM/CAM and illustrate that the mechanism's flexibility and extensibility makes LTE-Direct a good complementary technology to DSRC for periodic vehicular safety communications.","PeriodicalId":152372,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference","volume":"90 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128266664","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With VTL applications, vehicles self-organize for intersection crossing based on wireless communication. Although VTL applications must comply with high safety requirements, no verification of VTL's safety has been provided so far. We present a VTL protocol that is verified to be fail-safe using model checking as a verification approach. Performance evaluation through simulation showed that the verified fail-safe VTL protocol delivers-although far from optimum-decent results with respect to such traffic efficiency metrics like throughput and travel time. The investigated efficiency optimization substantially improved efficiency, yet compromised the safety of VTL. We quantify the tradeoff between efficiency and safety and show that increasing the safety level deteriorates efficiency only marginally. In particular, a safety level increase by a factor of 1,000 increases travel time by approximately 2% in the studied scenario. Therefore, high safety requirements can be met while maintaining high efficiency gains.","PeriodicalId":152372,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130114539","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A number of existing works use LEDs that already exist in vehicles, such as brake lights, turn signals, and headlamps, to carry out vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications with visible light communications (VLC). Nonetheless, very few studies derive analytical models for VLC with empirical data obtained from the real world or with realistic assumptions. In addition, experimental works were often conducted in closed environments with lighting systems that are specifically customized, instead of real-life lighting systems. In this paper, we perform an analytical study that attempts to derive VLC channel models in a realistic V2V setting. The proposed model is evaluated against the real-world data obtained with unmodified off-the-shelf scooter taillights, and the results show that the proposed model is able to accurately estimate the received power of the scooter taillight at distances of up to 10 meters. In addition, this paper also discusses several guidelines for modeling VLC radiation behaviors when different types of LED taillights are used.","PeriodicalId":152372,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134003592","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, as diagnostics equipment or their keys can be stolen or copied, these devices can not be trusted. Thus, authentication alone is not enough to prevent unauthorized access to vehicles. In previous work, we proposed an authorization protocol to prevent unauthorized access to vehicles. In this paper, we formally prove that the proposed authorization protocol provides mutual authentication between the diagnostics equipment and the vehicle, and that it guarantees both secrecy of the distributed session key and freshness of the distributed authorization information. Our formal analysis is conducted using both the Burrows-Abadi-Needham (BAN) Logic and the PROVERIF automated verification tool.","PeriodicalId":152372,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130929995","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although it is necessary to completely understand a protocol and the effect of its `turning knobs' on performance before adoption, STDMA has not yet been subjected to such rigorous treatment in the literature. In order to address this shortcoming we perform and present an in-depth analysis and evaluation of STDMA's fundamental principles. In particular, we contribute a detailed and complete description of the STDMA protocol, followed by the analysis and evaluation of two key questions: How can packet collisions occur in STDMA and whether packet collisions are `contagious'. We further perform a fair comparison with CSMA on the basis of which we provide recommendations on the configuration of STDMA. Our results show that STDMA coordinates multiple access effectively - even in highly congested situations - as long as all transmitted packets are decoded successfully. When non-decodable (but still carrier-sensible) transmissions are present, STDMA effectiveness drops below that achieved by CSMA due to the lack of control information. To ensure reproducibility and encourage further inquiry we release the STDMA implementation used in this paper to the wireless networks research community.","PeriodicalId":152372,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133569344","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Accessing a network through a proper technology requires the possibility of establishing connections with a minimum quality level; besides, a mechanism for switching from a network with poor performance to a better one by means of a so-called Vertical HandOver (VHO) may result of paramount importance. Cycling, as one of the most sustainable form of transportation, occupies an important place in the context of smart cities. Electric bicycles, the most popular electric vehicles, subscribe to this type of transportation. They have several advantages when compared to traditional bicycles, but also issues that relate to battery limited capacity and long periods of charging. Consequently energy-efficient solutions for electric bicycles are of very high research interest. Energy-efficient solutions based on V2X communications that are dedicated to electric vehicles are still in early research stages. So far, very few works have been proposed and their performance evaluation has been done analytically only. Among electric vehicles, electric bicycles distinguish themselves as a special class as they have different characteristics and road-related requirements. This paper presents our study of the potential of V2X communications to be used by electric bicycles for energy saving. For this purpose, a test-bed was built in order to facilitate a more realistic study compared to the analytical studies conducted so far. The results obtained show that the employment of V2X communications in the context of electric bicycles can lead to significant energy savings.","PeriodicalId":152372,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference","volume":"76 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114219572","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Assuming that drivers request location-dependent data when they face a scene indicating an accident or they are caught in congestion, multiple requests will be sent from the same area to a location temporarily. If vehicles holding the demanded data item send it to each requester, the same data item is sent to the same area many times. Due to this, the communication resource is wasted by the same data item. We propose Live VANET CDN, a location-dependent data sharing scheme, in which vehicles disseminate copies of location-dependent data item within an area which is adjusted according to demand for the data item. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme improves the success ratio of data requests with small traffic compared with data dissemination schemes that use fixed data dissemination area.","PeriodicalId":152372,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE Vehicular Networking Conference","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114667019","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
