As a publicly funded broadcaster the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) is playing an important role developing and implementing innovative content propositions across diverse delivery platforms. The growth of on-demand viewing, interactivity, social media and personalised data will significantly alter the traditional audio visual viewing experience and with it has the potential to radically change distribution, business and production models. The ABC is engaging with a range of innovative broadband enabled initiatives to ensure it can continue to deliver locally relevant content and services for its audiences. By taking risks which other media organisations might not be prepared to incur, the ABC is also playing a part in encouraging innovation more broadly across the industry. This is essential if the local media industry is to prosper and if demand for the distribution and creation of local content is to be maintained.","PeriodicalId":152105,"journal":{"name":"Telecommunications Journal of Australia","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126044888","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Much of the discussion on the NBN to date has been on the physical construction ramp and rollout progress of the project. Thousands of engineering and construction people are building the physical network; there are equally thousands of people developing the applications and new services that will run over the NBN. This article on the NBN Broadband Applications Canvas explores the investment and activity in Australia happening around the NBN in research, broadband application development and case studies of people using the national broadband network and future possibilities to exploit the full potential of the NBN.","PeriodicalId":152105,"journal":{"name":"Telecommunications Journal of Australia","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116513282","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By focusing on the case of the Indonesian market, this paper analyses the characteristics of the upcoming 4G mobile service applications which might be popular in such a developing country. To construct the analysis, we conducted a survey over a sample of people representative of the likely market for 4G services and applications in five years’ time. We also develop a model identifying the challenges as well as opportunities for the national players in the mobile communications sector, i.e. for the operators and content developers. The results indicate that the main source of service innovation is likely to come from combining knowledge of a country’s local perspective together with that of the global trend of mobile service applications. The combination of both streams would create a new service which is likely to be swiftly adopted by the market.","PeriodicalId":152105,"journal":{"name":"Telecommunications Journal of Australia","volume":"76 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123271771","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The policy underpinning expansion is notable for its adoption of new mechanisms that target the unauthorised use in new gTLDs of names the subject of legal – in particular trademark – rights. These mechanisms are the product of several years of policy development and implementation; they are proof of the functioning of ICANN’s unique multi-stakeholder model of Internet governance. Yet even as new top-level domains near the launch phase, questions remain as to the scope and mechanics of rights protection offered by agreed-upon mechanisms. A ‘strawman solution’ emerged at the end of 2012 to address these questions. This article examines the ‘strawman solution’, the rights protection mechanisms it seeks to clarify, and the ICANN organisational structure and operational processes into which it does not perfectly fit.","PeriodicalId":152105,"journal":{"name":"Telecommunications Journal of Australia","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126776543","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

So much so that some long established TLDs have started to develop a similar community approach and use language as a market segmentation tool to engage new registrants. It has been also an inspiration for new geographical and community based gTLD applications. This paper discusses what led to .cat’s success, including its governance arrangements, and how some new gTLDs that will soon be delegated by ICANN could benefit from its business strategy.","PeriodicalId":152105,"journal":{"name":"Telecommunications Journal of Australia","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133074814","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS). Although neither a forum focussed exclusively on ?Internet governance? nor the first discussion of the topic, WSIS marked the start of a global, decade-long debate on how the Internet is, and should be, managed. A decade later, the Internet has grown exponentially, bringing about massive cultural, social and economic change. And yet, many of the political and policy issues around its governance largely remain the same and are regularly debated in a wide range of fora. This article draws upon historical experiences in the Internet governance debate to explain and assess current discussions and to cast a wary eye into the future.","PeriodicalId":152105,"journal":{"name":"Telecommunications Journal of Australia","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127130950","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Being the fourth year of the TJA prize in his honour, and nearly five years since Christopher?s unfortunate death, it seemed timely to again reflect on our relationship and the seminal contribution and challenge, as a person with disability, that Christopher made to the telecommunications industry and to inclusive customer service. I hope this will provide further insight into Christopher?s role and modus operandi as an agent of change; how he characterised himself as a ?critical friend? of the industry yet chose to enter into deep personal relationships with people who walked with him as he scooted along on his journey. In Christopher I found a deep conjunction of the personal and the professional, a priest and a professor, a saint and a rogue.","PeriodicalId":152105,"journal":{"name":"Telecommunications Journal of Australia","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129835116","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
