Inevitably, the communication tends to be inefficient in terms of computational and network resources. Study on virtual infrastructures or backbones in wireless ad-hoc networks gets more attention in the hope of reducing the communication overhead. But the backbone structure is very vulnerable due to various factors like node mobility, unstable links, and so on. So a new scheme which is reliable and efficient both to construct and maintain the backbone structure is needed. We present our noble virtual backbone scheme which is reliable and efficient by considering stability and coverage of nodes.","PeriodicalId":150940,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE International Conference on Mobile Ad-hoc and Sensor Systems (IEEE Cat. With the emergence of radio frequency identification (RFID) based object tags, it is now practicable to automatically collect information pertaining to the object's place, time, transaction, etc. We propose an architecture for pervasive real-time tracking of object distribution and subsequently present an efficient mechanism for performing recall of RFID tagged objects that were previously distributed but turned out defective. Applying the concepts of scale free networks and epidemic theory, we mathematically model the distribution and recall process and get a stochastic estimate of the average spread of object distributions and the number of recall messages required. Our simulation results validate the analysis and the small average number of recall messages obtained proves the efficacy of the scheme.","PeriodicalId":150940,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE International Conference on Mobile Ad-hoc and Sensor Systems (IEEE Cat. Flexibility in adjusting the processing gain of UWB systems makes it possible to tune the data rate and transmission range to fulfill the requirements of specific applications. Conventional systems assign identical multiple access parameters to all users regardless of the signal-to-interference plus noise ratio of the received signal. An adaptive assignment scheme for multiple access parameters in cluster based wireless sensor networks is investigated. First, an orthogonal time hopping sequence construction is proposed for synchronous communications (downlink), where the number of pulses per symbol are adjusted to meet the bit error rate requirement of an application. Then, adaptation of multiple access parameters in asynchronous scenarios (uplink) is evaluated using a Gaussian approximation method to model the multiple access interference in two cases: one with fixed frame duration, where the goal is to increase the average throughput, and the other with fixed symbol duration, where the goal is to increase the network lifetime. Finally, a mathematical framework is developed for approximating the interference when the number of pulses per symbol and the frame duration vary.","PeriodicalId":150940,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE International Conference on Mobile Ad-hoc and Sensor Systems (IEEE Cat. Because of its strength and efficiency, a public key and digital signature system is an ideal building block to construct the authentication service. Although this is already mature in Internet applications, providing public key based authentication is still very challenging in mobile ad-hoc networks because the entire network is world-accessible via the wireless channel, the environment is highly volatile and infrastructure-less and there is lack of trust in the system. We propose a locality driven key management architecture that achieves robust key authentication and facilitates timely and efficient establishment of distributed trust. The architecture reflects our application oriented view of MANET and is based on threshold cryptography to achieve high fault tolerance against network partition and malicious nodes. On top of it, we design distributed trust protocols to help set up trust relations on-the-fly. To verify the concept and the design, we implement the prototype and simulate our solution in a variety of scenarios.","PeriodicalId":150940,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE International Conference on Mobile Ad-hoc and Sensor Systems (IEEE Cat. Our technique exploits the nearly linear relationship between throughput at a node and the channel occupancy contributed by that node. It provides estimates of available throughput on the basis of local measurements and neighbourhood information available locally at a node. This technique allows timely and non-intrusive estimation without active probing. It is shown by simulations that this new technique provides robust estimates of the throughput available to a node in an ad hoc network environment characterised by numerous active neighbours and dependencies between the levels of node activity along a multi-hop path.","PeriodicalId":150940,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE International Conference on Mobile Ad-hoc and Sensor Systems (IEEE Cat. However they do not take into account the interests of individual nodes. Managed by different profit-oriented entities, network nodes can no longer be assumed to cooperate with each other. Incentive-compatible routing seems to be more realistic to deal with selfish nodes in ad hoc networks. We propose the transmission power recursive auction mechanism (TEAM) routing protocol to prevent the selfish behavior and stimulate cooperative work from the game theoretic approach. It pays nodes for their services and makes cheating not attractive. Interests of nodes are best served if they only reveal true information. With some assumptions the truthfulness of TEAM can be proved. We present a theoretical bound of the power efficiency of TEAM protocol. It is also shown that, compared to another truthful routing protocol, Ad hoc-VCG, TEAM reduces the message complexity significantly.","PeriodicalId":150940,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE International Conference on Mobile Ad-hoc and Sensor Systems (IEEE Cat. Routing protocols are faced with the challenge of delivering data to sinks through multihop routes, in the presence of energy constrained sensor nodes. We present an energy-aware event dissemination protocol for mobile wireless sensor networks. In our proposed model each sink pro-actively constructs a redundant tree in the network to provide reliable delivery of events in the face of dynamic changes and mobility. Scalability is achieved by minimizing the number of participating nodes on the tree, while maintaining high coverage.","PeriodicalId":150940,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE International Conference on Mobile Ad-hoc and Sensor Systems (IEEE Cat. It extends Labeled Distance Routing (LDR) to the multipath domain and enables loop freedom by maintaining the ordering of distance invariants. By modifying the route update conditions of LDR and by using the concept of limiting distance we demonstrate shortest multipath routing. Further we describe the fundamental multipath concepts for on-demand routing protocols and elucidate how SMLDR exercises each of these concepts in its routing mechanisms. The performance of SMLDR is compared against the performance of LDR, AODV and its multipath variant AOMDV. The simulation results corroborate the need for shortest multipath routing in terms of higher performance for the chosen metrics.","PeriodicalId":150940,"journal":{"name":"2004 IEEE International Conference on Mobile Ad-hoc and Sensor Systems (IEEE Cat.
