Davy","doi":"10.3406/canan.1997.1689","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3406/canan.1997.1689","url":null,"abstract":"The first result s of the study carried out on part of the Atlantic coastal zone, in accordance with the method s of the French General Survey, have led us to present the following hypothesis : the process of human occupation of the coastal area is closely linked to the presence or proximity of the sea. A double interpretation , both historical and geographical, of the Iandscape, which we term halioscopy, shows that the sea is the driving force behind its evolution . In the Pays de la Loire region, the estuary paleo-ports and the architecture of seaside resorts are good examples of the way in which halioscopy can help to pin-point the breaks in the continuity of the relationship, established over time, between people and the shore . In chapter one, the author describes the main forest associations, the climatic, pedological and stational climaxes, and he deals with the forestal evolution of the main heathlands. Then, thanks to methods of landscape archeology, the author analyses the evolution of the Loire forest over the past 2000 years. Chapter three deals with new dynamics such as the emergence of intensive and darnaging tree-growing, the introduction of coniferous trees, and wild life changes. Anthony","doi":"10.3406/canan.1997.1725","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3406/canan.1997.1725","url":null,"abstract":"The development of tourism and transport infrastructures in Nice, on the French Riviera, has seriously affected the sediment dynamics and stability of the grave) barrier beaches bounding Nice Bay. Beach erosion has been more or less controlled since 1976 through artificial nourishment, using grave) obtained at little or no cost. Statistical analysis of beach width and nourishment volumes has enabled precise delimitation of sectors that have accreted following nourishment and those still subject to erosion. Persistence of the three erosional sectors is basically due to uneven distribution of the recharged material, to episodic torrential activity by small mountain streams emptying into the bay, and to the presence of small but active submarine canyons impinging on the beach . Two principles for optimising nourishment are presented.
