This study examined the impact of agricultural career information on the knowledge, perception and attitudes of secondary school students towards taking agriculture, as a career choice. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 136 school science students in senior secondary schools and structured questionnaire was used to elicit information on their knowledge, perception and attitudes with respect to career in agriculture. Data was collected for pre-test (baseline) and post-test (end-line) after the respondents had participated in an intervention tagged “Agricultural Career Information Program” and analyzed using descriptive and inferential (using t-test at p ≤ 0.05) statistics. Result showed that the students had a significant change in attitude towards choosing agriculture as a career choice after being exposed to the intervention program, but no significant change in the students’ knowledge and perception after being exposed to the program. Agricultural career counselling should be intentional in the education of the youths, in order to influence their attitude and eventual choice of a career in agriculture. The study recommends that career guidance be included in the curriculum of primary and secondary school students, with a focus on agricultural sector. Information sessions on the agricultural sector can also be organized to improve students’ knowledge, attitude and perception in order to direct their choice towards agriculture. \u0000 \u0000 \u0000

The soils were characterized and classified according to both the Soil Taxonomy (ST) and the World Reference Base for Soil Resources (WRB). Also, the suitability of the soils for sugarcane cultivation was evaluated using the limitation approach. While the USRF1 soils were reddish, the USRF2 soil was greyish due to poor drainage. The USRF1 soils were loamy sand with the AB-horizons of pedons II and III being gravelly. Pedon V had sandy loam surface, sandy clay loam subsurface and clay loam subsoil. The USRF1 soils were moderately acid while the USRF2 soil was slightly acid to slightly alkaline. Exchangeable calcium (Ca2+) content of the USRF2 soil which averaged 4.00 cmolc kg–1 was 2-3 times higher than that of the USRF1 soils. The USRF2 soil also contained higher Mg2+, K+ and Na+, 2-3 folds higher effective cation exchange capacity and > 10 folds higher soil organic carbon (with mean of 11.60 g kg–1) and total nitrogen (mean of 0.94 g kg–1). Under ST, pedons I and IV classified as Typic Haplustepts, II and III as Lithic Haplustepts and V as a Kanhaplic Haplustalf. Primary data were collected using specially design pretested schedule by interview method and using panel survey data, to analyze the effects of mechanization on labour employment and cropland expansion in northern Nigeria, respectively. A sample of 240 farmers were taken for the study. Tabular, percent and linear regression analysis were done. The study found that labour employment per cropped hectare showed a declining trend with increase in farm group size under different categories of mechanization. The inverse relationship revealed between labour employment and farm size hold true in case of operation like sowing, intercultural operation and irrigation. Hired labour and family labour both had positive and negative relationship, respectively with farm size in each category of mechanized farm. Findings also show a positive correlation between farm mechanization and cropland expansion during the survey period. Two interaction terms were introduced in the model to assess whether there are differential effects of mechanization on cropland expansion across the three districts. The results show that the effect of mechanization on farmland expansion is significantly higher among farmers in Igabi compared to Zaria. This result may be driven by the differences in access to tractors in the districts with Igabi having the highest access, then followed by Zaria. \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 \u0000

Smallholders can gain additional incomes from their transactions with SMEs and in turn, poverty problem could be alleviated. This article aims to better understand how export SMEs’ growth and survival strengthens smallholders’ market integration development and livelihood improvement. We collected data from 52 SMEs involved in the cassava and shea butter sectors in Benin. Interviews were organized, based on the need of value market access, with cassava producers in the Center Region, and women collecting and transforming shea nuts into butter in the Center and Northern Regions. When developing the measurement instrument, its validity and trustworthiness are concerned. SPSS was used for descriptive statistics and R was used for Multiple Correspondence Factor Analysis. Results suggest that 96% of SMEs exporting firms perceived exporting as profitable and resources generation tool. 95% of smallholders appreciate SMEs as value added markets for their products. SMEs are institutional context for smallholders exchange experience in value added process, customers’ needs and expectations satisfaction. They earn more profits from their selling when export SMEs grow and survive. The data collected from 90 poultry farmers were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the logit regression model, to evaluate the socio-economic factors determining the respondents’ access to creditand also to analyze the influence of access to credit on faecal management practices in the study area. The descriptive result showed the farmers earned less than N100, 000 monthly (mean = 61,402±12,127.17, ca. $290) and up to 48% still lacked access to credit. The major use of credit among the farmers was for operational activities (53%) which included waste management. Only 48% of the farmers had access to quality extension service and 46% do not participate in any cooperative. Despite the fact that most of the farmers were aware of impact of farming activities on climate change, about 80% still practiced open dumping of faecal waste without proper treatment because of credit constraint. The logit result (all at p < 0.05) showed that farming experience, farm size, awareness of credit source, cooperative participation, access to extension service and farm income were associated with both access to credit and farmers’ use of appropriate waste management practice. Based on the findings, it is recommended that better waste management practices among poultry farmers should be enhanced by facilitating increased access to credit and this is sine qua non to mitigating climate change. \u0000Key words: climate change, credit access, faecal management, Nigeria, poultry

During training camps, elite female handball players from different parts of the country are subjected to the same diet. The objective of the study was to determine the effect of a communication programme proposed in 2019, to the cadet and junior female handball players, on their dietary behaviour in Benin. This is an intervention study, with 36 cadet and junior female handball players selected to participate in the two training camps in 2019. Data on the physiological, social, cultural and psychological determinants of eating behaviour were collected through observation and questionnaire, as appropriate, before and after the intervention. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data and McNemar's test was used to analyze the contingency tables. Fifteen players significantly improved their eating behaviour from zero at baseline to good (p = 0.0001). The physiological, social, cultural and psychological determinants of eating behaviour were all improved at p = 0.0001. The proposed communication programme induced a significant improvement in the eating behaviour of the handball female players studied. Nutrition education sessions and the integration of the players' food preferences into diets may have a more significant impact in a future study.

Sterilized soil was subjected to a three level of SEO contamination before the addition of sterilized biostimulants including powdered cow dung (CD), powdered cocoa pod husk (CPH) and compost (made from fresh CPH and CD). Bacterial inoculum being Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus cereus co-culture (150 mL) was added to the mixture in polyethylene bags. It was a factorial experiment that was laid out in a completely randomized design (CRD). The TPH and PAHs were estimated in the first day, fifth week and the tenth week that the room incubation lasted. Results generated from the influence of biostimulants on TPH and PAHs degradation potential of the bacterial co-culture showed that degradation of the hydrocarbon contents was significantly enhanced (p < 0.05). At the tenth week, compost enhanced the most TPH reductions (315 and 380 mg kg–1) compared with other biostimulants on 5% and 15% SEO contamination levels, respectively. Compost equally enhanced the most PAHs reductions (48.8, 39.6 and 94.6 mg kg–1) compared with other biostimulants on 5%, 10% and 15% SEO contamination levels respectively. However, the quantity of SEO contents degraded was significantly higher in the bioaugmented and biostimulated soil samples compared with the control employed. The technology adopted in this study can be effectively employed for the bioremediation of petroleum hydrocarbon related pollution.

Physico-chemical parameters of the water samples from the River and heavy metal concentrations in the crab species obtained also from the River were examined using standard methods. The results showed that total dissolved solute (TDS), electrical conductivity (EC), salinity, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand varied significantly along the River course, with TDS and EC being relatively high. Heavy metals detected in the crabs were Fe, Cu and Zn, with Cu being the highest in the species examined. The species C. ornatus presented the highest content of Cu followed by C. armatum and C. danae. The content of heavy metals (mg kg–1) among the crab species showed that Cu (23.47±0.10) > Zn (19.06±0.01) > Fe (16.85±0.01) in all the species except in C. armatum where Fe (1.26±0.44) was > Zn (1.19±0.02). Furthermore, Pb, Cd and Cr were not found in the crabs and this could be associated with the fact that the area consists mainly of residential houses, farms and a few industries. Notably, the content of the heavy metals was larger in the female than the male crabs. This study reported different levels of heavy metal accumulation in male and female species of crabs. Also, the shell fishes from Ojo River might be considered safe for consumption, but the need for continuous monitoring to prevent bioaccumulation is recommended.

This study is aimed to produce and evaluate the functional, pasting, proximate composition and sensory properties of a breakfast meal made from blends of sorghum, bambara and date flours. Gruels were made using composite flour (450 μm) in ratio of 80:15:5, 70:20:10, 60:25:5 and 100:0:0 for sorghum, bambara and date palm respectively. Samples were assessed for functional, pasting, proximate and sensory properties using standard procedures. Data were analyzed using ANOVA at p = 0.05. The functional properties of the flour blends were significantly (p = 0.05) affected by the increasing level of supplementation of bambara and date palm flour. There was a decrease in gelatinization temperature and viscosity as the level of supplementation of bambara nut and date palm flours increased. The gruel from 100% sorghum flour (control) had the highest pasting properties. Proximate composition of the gruels was as follows: moisture, 10.79-9.22%; crude protein, 4.50-10.37%; crude fat, 1.56-2.12%; ash, 2.86-1.76%; crude fibre, 0.10-0.88% and carbohydrate, 80.33-75.15%. Samples made from 60:25:15 flour blends showed significantly (p = 0.05) highest sensory qualities while gruel from 100% sorghum was lowest. This study analysed output supply and input demand of maize production using a farm survey data of 600 randomly selected maize farmers from all agricultural zones in Kaduna State of Nigeria. Data were analysed using a modified Nerlovian model and set of input demand equations. The results showed that in all estimates (yield and hectarage) long run estimates are greater than the short run values and both were inelastic. The elasticity for lagged own price of maize was 0.23% in the short run and 0.17% in the long run were positive, marginal and inelastic. The hectarage elasticity of supply response for maize is 1.04 in the short run and 0.78 in the long run. The result of the input demand equations showed that the coefficients cost of agrochemical and farm size statistically affect seed, fertilizer and labour demand. The study portrayed that the most critical issues in maize supply are the lack of improved production technology, poor capital investment, land unavailability or poor land tenure system and poor policy incentives. The study recommends that, there is a need for State policy on agricultural research and extension, and adequate input price policies. The government is advised to dissolve the agricultural extension service system to local governments. This will allow agricultural extension system to be more location specific.
