The staircase layout effects on evacuation time was the mainly research content. The results indicate that in addition to considering the distance between two adjacent stairs, the distribution of occupants in building plane is also an important factor which needs to be considered on the layout of staircase. The changes of staircase plane positions have a great impact on the total evacuation time in the case of the same total stair exit width. It is favored for evacuation when the evacuation time differences of staircase exits are small. However, such systematic studies are not yet found in Hong Kong. It is understood that evacuation is a key point. In this article, evacuation will be simulated at the 8th level of a university building with different guess design. Both horizontal and vertical transport will be considered. Occupant loading is based on the maximum allowed figures in the local codes. Variation of the occupant loading will also be simulated. To study the piston effect on fire smoke flow, this article simulates some fire scenes under four different elevator cars motion states by Fluent. It analyzes the pressure distribution, the velocity distribution, and the CO2 concentration distribution. Because of the low CO2 content in the air, CO2 is used to track the movement of fire smoke. The effect of the piston motion on the smoke is analyzed. It has the maximum disturbance on the smoke when the two cars move up and down respectively at the same time. In this case, the smoke can get into the elevator shaft more easily.
