In this paper we present an adaptive wake-up-interval scheme for preamble sampling (MAC) protocols for variable traffic in WSN. The wake-up-interval is updated based on the traffic status register (whose contents depend on the presence of messages for a particular node). The proposed algorithm considers dominant effect of recent traffic with regards to the old traffic and also it relies on the occurrence of consecutive data packets. The results show that the sensor node adapts and converges its wake-up-interval to the best trade-off value for fixed and variable traffic patterns. Two optimization parameters (length of traffic status register and initial wake-up-interval value) are also tuned to achieve fast convergence speed for different traffic rates and variations.","PeriodicalId":149596,"journal":{"name":"2011 Third International Workshop on Cross Layer Design","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123323045","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An analytical approach based on an optimization problem formulation for the time-frequency spectrum allocation matter is proposed. The optimization problem takes into consideration heterogeneous constraints belonging to two different layers, leading to a cross-layer approach. The cross-layer concept approved in the optimization problem shows its ability to satisfy the heterogeneous users requirements, which ensures a high-level of quality-of-service (QoS) support. Simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed scheme in terms of rate satisfaction and resource use optimization.","PeriodicalId":149596,"journal":{"name":"2011 Third International Workshop on Cross Layer Design","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117258839","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, MANETs do not seem to effectively support multimedia applications and especially video transmission. This paper presents a cross-layer mechanism for efficient video transmission over this type of networks. The proposed mechanism consists of a priority-scheduling algorithm, at the network layer, and the use of the IEEE 802.11e standard at the MAC layer. The priority-scheduling algorithm takes into account the frame type of the MPEG-4 video file in order to provide different priorities to the most important video packets. At the MAC layer, the IEEE 802.11e protocol assigns the highest priority to video applications to reduce delay and packets losses due to other competing traffic. This design is easily implemented in any ad hoc wireless network as an extension on the AODV MANET routing protocol. Simulation results conducted with the network simulator ns-2 show the advantages of the proposed design.","PeriodicalId":149596,"journal":{"name":"2011 Third International Workshop on Cross Layer Design","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125138553","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We first consider a scenario where a base station communicates with a mobile station with the help of a relay. The relay decodes the information from the base station and it re-encodes it to generate some extra redundancy, which is transmitted to the mobile station. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission is considered where the available bandwidth is divided into a total number of subcarriers allocated between the base station and the relays. The proposed scheme achieves a significant gain with respect to the non-cooperation case. Furthermore, we extend the proposed system to a two-relay scenario where two relays assist the transmission between the base station and the mobile station. Single frequency network (SFN)-like transmission is used at the relays, i.e., the relays are allocated the same subcarriers, in order to efficiently exploit the radio spectrum.","PeriodicalId":149596,"journal":{"name":"2011 Third International Workshop on Cross Layer Design","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117295111","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

If this technique allows to efficiently optimize point-to-point transmissions in the network, it poses several challenges when transmitting the same information to multiple stations, i.e. Multicast/Broadcast data streams. In this paper, an efficient algorithm that smartly merges similar tone maps is presented, in order to better handle Multicast/Broadcast data streams. The demonstration of its efficiency will be made placing ourselves in the context of power line communications networks following the HPAV specification. However, our merging principle itself remains applicable to any system associating multicarrier modulations and bit-loading algorithms, as it could be in an indoor wireless environment.","PeriodicalId":149596,"journal":{"name":"2011 Third International Workshop on Cross Layer Design","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114245903","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cooperative transmission capitalises on the exploitation of radio channel diversity provided by additional relay nodes forming virtual antenna arrays. Especially in dense set-ups, there appears an urgent need for the exploitation of the network layer routines for the purposes of organising many potentially concurrent cooperative and non-cooperative transmissions. Finally, complex network configurations require the incorporation of self-management so the system can behave autonomically as if it was imitating the processes driving real living organisms. All these aspects induce certain cross-layer elements into the overall system design to be discussed in this paper.","PeriodicalId":149596,"journal":{"name":"2011 Third International Workshop on Cross Layer Design","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131384535","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The new standard consists of a unified home network, which hides the heterogeneity of wired and wireless connections from the end user. Applications can benefit from the capabilities of all the combined technologies constituting the home network. Moreover, the OMEGA home network reaches transmission speeds of one gigabit per second (1 Gbps) not only over robust Ethernet links, but also over power-line communications and wireless connections. With OMEGA's gigabit home network, users can get easy access to high bandwidth information and communication services.","PeriodicalId":149596,"journal":{"name":"2011 Third International Workshop on Cross Layer Design","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115571539","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed technique combines sub-carrier interleaving process to sub-canalization in order to optimize interleaving spreading and introduce interleaving diversity in the OFDM(A) sub-channel allocation. The algorithm denoted Interleaving based Resource Allocation (IRA), efficiently improves link level performance in the WPAN context copying with high propagation correlation levels. IRA is applied here to 60 GHz Multi-Gigabit Wireless Systems (MGWS) and plan to be evaluated on IEEE802.11 ad draft standard.","PeriodicalId":149596,"journal":{"name":"2011 Third International Workshop on Cross Layer Design","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125048623","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we introduce an ITS station reference architecture recently developed by the ETSI TC ITS and ISO TC204 WG16. Then, we develop service interfaces for securing IPv6 ITS communication: 1) generic commands for activating/deactivating the security services at the IPv6 layer; and 2) generic commands for requesting atomic security operations. We also provide an example showing how the proposed generic commands are used in the pseudonym change.","PeriodicalId":149596,"journal":{"name":"2011 Third International Workshop on Cross Layer Design","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126347591","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
