They are widely used in different applications of orthopaedic surgery. The possibility of injecting them extends their use to minimally invasive surgical techniques. The chapter describes the two main families of bone cements, namely, acrylic bone cements and calcium phosphate bone cements. The basic physicochemical, mechanical and biological properties of these two types of bone cement are reviewed and the most relevant clinical applications are described.","PeriodicalId":148673,"journal":{"name":"Bone Repair Biomaterials","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123588990","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To this end, the surgeon may choose between two approaches: restoring bone through synthetic permanent biomaterials or through degradable biomaterials. Metal prostheses are widely used to restore bony organs. However, bone is an anisotropic material and metals can at most capture the geometry of the natural tissue. Composite materials are very convenient for bone repair, since the material structure designs of composites provide a wider set of options and possibilities in implant design. The filament winding and the compression molding approaches are the most suitable technology to reproduce the anisotropy of bone. However, one of the main problems related to bone repair through prostheses is fatigue. A damaged prostheses needs to be removed and substituted with a new prostheses. On the other hand, biodegradable composites represent the latest advancement achieved in bone repair. This approach belongs to regenerative medicine. In the first stage the synthetic material needs to sustain mechanical loads, interact with cells, and stimulate the production of the extracellular matrix. As tissue grows, the synthetic material degrades and transfers the mechanical function to the newly formed bone. Therefore the composite material is designed according to a programmed functionality. In this chapter the mechanical behavior of continuous fiber-reinforced polymers and biodegradable composites for bone repair are investigated.","PeriodicalId":148673,"journal":{"name":"Bone Repair Biomaterials","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131224942","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
