Among the outcomes of construction aid were cultural and technical exchanges between the donor and recipient countries. This essay examines the typical construction aid projects gifted by the Chinese Communist government and professionals to developing countries in Asia and African during the era of Chairman Mao Zedong, with a focus on key Asian examples. The remarkably high percentage of national income spent by Maoist China on construction aid might have increased the burden upon the lives of ordinary Chinese people, yet they gave Chinese architects rare opportunities to practice Modernism in overseas environments. The strength of the technical forces of the Chinese Communist state, and the wisdom of Chinese designers, were notably crystallized through a series of conference halls and stadiums built across Asia. These construction aid projects informed similar designs back in China, which led in turn to further innovations that could then again be exported abroad. Altogether it represents an important non-Western strand within Modernist architecture of the twentieth century.","PeriodicalId":147974,"journal":{"name":"ARENA Journal of Architectural Research","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131276362","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Is Anyone in the Room? 房间里有人吗?

{"title":"Is Anyone in the Room?","authors":"S. Gage","doi":"10.5334/AJAR.116","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5334/AJAR.116","url":null,"abstract":"Utilising a test house built to the author’s design in North London as its case study, this essay describes the need for reliable occupancy sensing in houses where automatic room-by-room environmental control takes place, before going on to discuss the complexity of transient room-by-room occupancy in this type of building. Doors are usually thought of as being kept closed in our homes. When however the doors are kept open, as is often the case, the house is identified as being generically different from a spatial, social and an environmental point of view. The essay makes the case for reliable local sensing on a room-by-room basis that is private and not dependent upon the Internet. Possible sensing devices are discussed, and the essay then goes on to analyse the combined use of PIR (passive infrared) and CO2 (carbon dioxide) sensors in the case study dwelling. The building is ventilated by a whole house heat recovery system (MHVR) and the results are provided for various conditions: a) doors and windows closed; b) doors open and windows closed; c) doors closed and windows open; and d) doors open and windows open. The paper concludes that in the first two of these conditions the combined sensors will robustly indicate occupancy in the house, and that local machine learning could support PIR-only sensing in the latter two conditions.","PeriodicalId":147974,"journal":{"name":"ARENA Journal of Architectural Research","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125672273","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The pictures shown here in this photographic study attempt to respond critically to the different dialectics of the camera, bodies, architecture, and light that prevail during the hours of night in Magaluf and Palma on the Spanish island of Mallorca. These images also aim to transgress the boundaries between the different visual cultures of these places because they seem to be outmoded in the way they socially categorise tourists, in what, on closer inspection, is evidently becoming part of a more ‘liquid modernity’ – to use Zygmunt Bauman’s term – than the one that is still being portrayed. (Note: This paper expands upon themes raised in a short article previously published in 2015) [2].","PeriodicalId":147974,"journal":{"name":"ARENA Journal of Architectural Research","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116794907","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Notions such as temporality, permanence, exception and camp-cities are used in academic publications in an attempt to understand the continued existence of these spaces. Scholars nonetheless have fallen short of presenting a historical narrative, or convincing argument, as to why and how these camps can ensure their continued operation within often violent and complex host geographies. Refugee camps are not merely humanitarian spaces relegated to international aid programmes. On the contrary, due to their common protracted nature, they have evolved into some of the most dynamic and vital forms of built environment. The fundamental element which guarantees this vitalism, in socio-economic and political terms, is space and space-making. This essay, based on long-term fieldwork research in two Palestinian refugee camps – Baqa’a in Jordan and Burj el Barajneh in Lebanon –showcases the specific ingenious acts of space-making developed by Palestinian refugees throughout 73 years of forced displacement. Furthermore, the essay introduces the notion of ‘spatial violations’ to describe the political act of space-making adopted by Palestinian refugees to overcome modes of ‘management and control’ by host governments and the United Nations. Scenarios of violence and economic development triggered by these acts of ‘spatial violation’ will also be illustrated, as will some spatial interventions designed and built inside these two Palestinian camps as part of this research project. The installations were designed as experiential architectural devices to provoke conversation around space and space-making across Palestinian camps.","PeriodicalId":147974,"journal":{"name":"ARENA Journal of Architectural Research","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126560459","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
