Preliminary results show that this technique combines the advantages of the FBG, LPFG and low-coherence-interferometry, such as immune to EMI, high accuracy and resolution, small and compact sensor head, corrosion resistance etc. This sensor system is well-suited to health monitoring of large engineering structures, such as highways, bridges, buildings and aircrafts.","PeriodicalId":147710,"journal":{"name":"2002 15th Optical Fiber Sensors Conference Technical Digest. The shape of the noise distribution suggests that noise in the filter wavelength dominates at frequencies above 100 Hz. The noise floor supports previous measurements of nanostrain resolution in this instrument. Significant improvement to the resolution of a sensor system based on this approach, therefore, will require low-noise drive voltages for the FFP (fiber Fabry-Perot filter) up to the limits of the digitization process.","PeriodicalId":147710,"journal":{"name":"2002 15th Optical Fiber Sensors Conference Technical Digest. The strain sensor elements are based on optical fibre Bragg gratings (FBG). The sensor structure includes a common mode rejection capability of temperature induced drift. This rejection scheme is also expected to compensate for a change in Bragg wavelength (XB) due to ionising radiation. It is designed to meet the most stringent accuracy requirements of IEC or IEEE/ANSI standards for revenue metering over a wide temperature range and under varying input light intensity. The optical electric field sensor (EFS) system is based on a Pockels cell. The light source, the detection unit, and the processing unit are made of electronic (and opto-electronic) components and are integrated in a single electronics module. Optical fibers effectively guide the light between the electronics module and the sensor-head in the high voltage environment and provide galvanic isolation between these environments.","PeriodicalId":147710,"journal":{"name":"2002 15th Optical Fiber Sensors Conference Technical Digest.
