An awareness of the demands and behaviors of the hosted applications can help the system to manage its resources more effectively. This paper proposes an active learning approach that analyzes performance histories to build predictive models of frequently used applications; the histories consist of measures gathered from noninvasive instrumentation on previous runs with varying assignments of compute, network and storage resources. An initial prototype uses linear regression to predict application interactions with candidate resources and combines them to forecast completion time for a candidate resource assignment. Experimental results from the prototype show that the mean forecasting errors range from 1% to 11% for a set of batch tasks captured from a production cluster. Examples illustrate how a system can use the learned models to guide task placement and data staging.","PeriodicalId":146874,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE International Conference on Autonomic Computing","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124321690","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Users evaluate QoS at run time to address their service invocation to the most suitable provider. Thus, QoS has a direct impact on providers' revenues. However, QoS requirements are difficult to satisfy because of the high variability of Internet workloads. Workload variability cannot be accommodated with traditional capacity planning and allocation practices, but requires autonomic computing techniques. Autonomic computing involves two tightly inter-related problems, namely, a short-term resource allocation problem and a long-term capacity planning problem. Capacity planning requires an investment that should be balanced by the revenues obtained through resource allocation. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive framework modelling both problems. The short-term resource allocation problem is analyzed in depth. The paper proposes an optimization model that identifies the optimal resource allocation by maximizing a provider's revenues while satisfying customers QoS constraints and minimizing resource usage cost. Preliminary computational experiments are presented to support the effectiveness of our approach.","PeriodicalId":146874,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE International Conference on Autonomic Computing","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130479610","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Virtual machines greatly simplify wide-area distributed computing by lowering the abstraction to benefit both resource users and providers. A virtual execution environment consisting of virtual machines (VMs) interconnected with virtual networks provides opportunities to dynamically optimize, at run-time, the performance of existing, unmodified distributed applications without any user or programmer intervention. We have formalized the adaptation problem in virtual execution environments and shown that it is NP-hard to both, solve and approximate within a factor of m1/2-δfor any δ > 0, where m is the number of edges in the virtual overlay graph. We also designed and evaluated greedy adaptation algorithms and found them to work well in practice.","PeriodicalId":146874,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE International Conference on Autonomic Computing","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121908159","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Examples include provisioning, scheduling, capacity planning, logging and auditing. A key component of such automation functions is online monitoring. In contrast to monitoring systems designed for human users, a particular concern for online enterprise monitoring is Quality of Service (QoS). Since breaking service level agreements (SLAs) has direct financial and legal implications, enterprise monitoring must be conducted so as to maintain SLAs. This includes the ability to differentiate the QoS of monitoring itself for different classes of users or more generally, for software components subject to different SLAs. Thus, without embedding notions of QoS into the monitoring systems used in next generation data centers, it will not be possible to accomplish the desired automation of their operation. This paper both demonstrates the importance of QoS in monitoring and it presents a QoS-capable monitoring system, termed QMON. QMON supports utility-aware monitoring while also able to differentiate between different classes of monitoring, corresponding to classes of SLAs. The implementation of QMON offers high levels of predictability for service delivery (i.e., predictable performance) and it is dynamically configurable to deal with changes in enterprise needs or variations in services and applications. We demonstrate the importance of QoS in monitoring and the QoS capabilities of QMON in a series of case studies and experiments, using a multi-tier web service benchmark.","PeriodicalId":146874,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE International Conference on Autonomic Computing","volume":"189 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128664210","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents a new cluster-management system, called Evil Man, that aims at making clusters as secure and self-managing as possible. Evil Man is inspired by real-life Laundromats: All nodes in a cluster are configured with a minimal software base consisting of a Virtual Machine Monitor and a remote bootstrapping mechanism and customers then buy access using a simple pre-paid token scheme. All necessary application software, including the operating system, is provided by the customer as a full Virtual Machine and boot-strapped or migrated into the cluster Technically, the core ingredients of Evil Man are a novel operating system Boot-strapping and Self-Migration mechanism and a simple pre-paid Token Scheme on which all access control and accounting is based. Combined, these mechanisms create a simple, autonomous, secure and highly flexible cluster computing platform suitable for deployment in a cluster or Grid system. We work hard at reducing the amount of privileged network-facing software on each node. For instance, the privileged part of our network protocol implementation consists of only a few hundred lines of C-code. Performance measurements of our prototype show that Evil Man can bootstrap a non-trivial application onto an 11-node cluster in less than nine seconds and that performing live migration during application execution has negligible performance impact.","PeriodicalId":146874,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE International Conference on Autonomic Computing","volume":"123 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132444803","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The highest-value opportunities are going to be where we can reduce human decision-making complexity for systems administrators. To identify these opportunities, we need a model of decision complexity for configuring and operating computing systems. This paper extends previous work on models and metrics for IT configuration complexity by adding the concept of decision complexity. As the first step towards a complete model of decision complexity, we describe an extensive user study of decision making in a carefully-mapped analogous domain (route planning) and illustrate how the results of that study suggest an initial model of decision complexity applicable to IT configuration. The model identifies the key factors affecting decision complexity and highlights several interesting results, including the fact that decision complexity has significantly different impacts on user-perceived difficulty than on objective measures like time and error rate. We also describe some of the implications of our decision complexity model for system designers seeking to automate the decision-making and reduce the configuration complexity of their systems.","PeriodicalId":146874,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE International Conference on Autonomic Computing","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131697230","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Modelling-based approaches have proved very successful for provisioning the web and application server tiers in dynamic content servers. On the other hand, accurately modelling the behavior of the back-end database server tier is a daunting task. Hence, automated provisioning of database replicas has received comparatively less attention. This paper introduces a novel pro-active scheme based on the classic K-nearest-neighbors (KNN) machine learning approach for adding database replicas to application allocations in dynamic content web server clusters. Our KNN algorithm uses lightweight monitoring of essential system and application metrics in order to decide how many databases it should allocate to a given workload. Our pro-active algorithm also incorporates awareness of system stabilization periods after adaptation in order to improve prediction accuracy and avoid system oscillations. We compare this pro-active self-configuring scheme for scaling the database tier with a reactive scheme. Our experiments using the industry-standard TPC-W e-commerce benchmark demonstrate that the pro-active scheme is effective in reducing both the frequency and peak level of SLA violations compared to the reactive scheme. Furthermore, by augmenting the pro-active approach with awareness and tracking of system stabilization periods induced by adaptation in our replicated system, we effectively avoid oscillations in resource allocation.","PeriodicalId":146874,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE International Conference on Autonomic Computing","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126715676","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Publish/subscribe middlewares, scientific visualization and collaboration tools and corporate operational information systems are examples of one class of systems, distributed information flow infrastructures, that could benefit from self management. This paper presents IFLOW, an autonomic middleware for implementing these different distributed systems in a self-managing way. IFLOW reduces different messaging models down to a common information flow abstraction, creates a self-managing implementation of that abstraction and then provides a substrate for building diverse information flow systems. We describe the design and implementation of IFLOW and describe case studies of implementing different messaging models as self-managing systems.","PeriodicalId":146874,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE International Conference on Autonomic Computing","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116756179","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a result, policies are the new currency of interaction between people and computers, creating a new paradigm for interaction with autonomic systems. In this paradigm, interaction shifts (1) from low-level to high-level monitoring and control and (2) from manually performing actions to delegating tasks to automation. In this paper, we report an experimental study comparing and contrasting manual interaction to policy-based interaction to manage a simulated e-commerce website. In this study, we investigated issues related to human expertise and policy representation. Our results suggest that effective policy-based interaction depends both on the level of detail of the policies and on the experience of the system supervisor. Our results show an overall benefit of policy-based interaction, as measured by business and technology-oriented metrics. Performance was significantly better with policy-based interaction following expertise gained through manual interaction. Performance with manual interaction was marginally worse after policy-based interaction, suggesting the classic out-of-the-loop problem. In addition, highly detailed policy representations marginally improved performance for technology-oriented metrics but did not yield significant differences for business-oriented metrics.","PeriodicalId":146874,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE International Conference on Autonomic Computing","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131465008","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The adaptations we are concerned with assist with problem detection, diagnosis and remediation. Many existing computing systems do not include such adaptation mechanisms, as a result these systems either need to be re-designed to include them or there needs to be a mechanism for retro-fitting these mechanisms. The purpose of the adaptation mechanisms is to ease the job of the system administrator with respect to managing software systems. This paper introduces Kheiron, a framework for facilitating adaptations in running programs in a variety of execution environments without requiring the re-design of the application. Kheiron manipulates compiled C programs running in an unmanaged execution environment as well as programs running in Microsoft's Common Language Runtime and Sun Microsystems' Java Virtual Machine. We present case-studies and experiments that demonstrate the feasibility of using Kheiron to support self-healing systems. We also describe the concepts and techniques used to retro-fit adaptations onto existing systems in the various execution environments.","PeriodicalId":146874,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE International Conference on Autonomic Computing","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114777434","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
