Indeed, tagged items (either static or randomly moving in the scenario) that are close to the reader antenna could be detected even if they are not on the conveyor (false positive readings). The classification procedure here proposed is based on some features that are extracted from a phase-based technique used to localize tags on a conveyor belt, which takes advantage of the fact that the tagged items move along a conveyor whose speed and path are both known a priori. Differently from other techniques that are used to solve the above misclassification issue, the proposed approach does not require multiple antennas.","PeriodicalId":143130,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE RFID Technology and Applications Conference (RFID-TA)","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116777767","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The design of a UWB antenna for application in smart textiles is very challenging. For end users, the antenna should be unobtrusively integrated into smart textile and comfortable to wear. From a system point of view, good impedance matching and radiation characteristics over a very large bandwidth are of major importance, even under harsh operating conditions. Our approach consists of applying copper tube eyelets to implement a cavity-backed slot antenna in textile materials. A prototype was realized and measured. The measured return loss characteristic and radiation performance after bending and deploying the antenna on different human body parts prove that our antenna is extremely suited for on-body use. A -10 dB-bandwidth of 1.33 GHz, or 33 %, was realized, in which the radiation pattern remains quasi invariable.","PeriodicalId":143130,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE RFID Technology and Applications Conference (RFID-TA)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130167168","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The antennas were fabricated from silver plated stretchable fabric made of nylon and elastic fibers. We coated half of the tested samples with acrylic spray to compare the influence of recurrent washing on the performance of the coated and uncoated tags. The fully functional tags including the microchip were washed ten times in a household washing machine using a typical 40°C program and detergent. The performance of the tags was measured after each wash. Prior washing, the peak read ranges of the tags were over 5.5 m. After ten washing cycles, the read ranges of coated and non-coated tags were 1.5 m and 2.8 m, respectively.","PeriodicalId":143130,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE RFID Technology and Applications Conference (RFID-TA)","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129581267","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The theoretical design is experimentally validated with a commodity software-defined radio (SDR) reader; tag-to-reader ranges up to 134 meters are demonstrated with 13 dBm emitter power, while bit error rate (BER) is reduced or range is increased, on the order of 10 additional meters (or more) compared to the uncoded case, with linear encoding at the tag/sensor and simple decoding at the reader. Even though designing low-complexity channel coding schemes is a challenging problem, this work offers a concrete solution that could accelerate the adoption of scatter radio for large-scale wireless sensor networks, i.e. backscatter sensor networks.","PeriodicalId":143130,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE RFID Technology and Applications Conference (RFID-TA)","volume":"84 1-2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120928617","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The design consists of two single series rectifier circuits that add the currents from each diode, in order to increase the offered power at the load. Despite the fact that a lossy and low-cost FR-4 substrate was used, the rectenna-grid offers 200 μW at load for 1 μW=cm2 ambient power density, while for 0.01 μW=cm2 the power at load reaches 0.8 μW. Furthermore, RF-to-DC rectification efficiency of 20.5% and 35.3% is achieved at -20 and -10 dBm power input, respectively. Measurements of the proposed RF harvester agree well with simulations. Finally, the rectenna was connected to a DC-to-DC converter and the open voltage was increased from 298 mV to 1.4 V, charging a 1 mF capacitor at 37 min. The stored energy could supply a sensor in a wireless network, with consumption 20 mW, rate 1 kbps and word-length of 20 bits.","PeriodicalId":143130,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE RFID Technology and Applications Conference (RFID-TA)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127546824","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The modification allows to eliminate the preliminary stage of collecting measurement data from RFID tags without significant localization accuracy degradation (the experiments showed the increase of the mean error by only 0.4 cm). The approach is based on using a simple linear model for the function of distance vs. measurement data, taking into account the possible ellipticity of RFID tag position figures, and processing measurements of different types-namely, received signal strength (RSS) and read rate (RR).","PeriodicalId":143130,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE RFID Technology and Applications Conference (RFID-TA)","volume":"91 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122963073","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This device has been realized within the “Smart Pebble” project, where an RFID based solution is employed to measure the displacement of a swarm of pebbles during predefined periods, in order to analyze the dynamics of a beach under the effect of stormy events, and then the impact of coastal erosion on the studied stretch of coast. The reader described in this paper has been developed to facilitate the localization of the so-called Smart Pebbles, i.e. real pebbles taken from the beach under study and provided with an embedded RFID transponder, then positioned on and under the seabed. The developed device is able to detect the presence of a Smart Pebble up to a 50cm distance, and its functioning has been tested at depths up to 5 meters for prolonged spans of time (up to 4 hours). Moreover, a wireless connection based on IEEE 802.15.4 has been set up between the reader and a laptop to allow the wireless transfer of the transponder ID from the reader to a laptop positioned on the beach.","PeriodicalId":143130,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE RFID Technology and Applications Conference (RFID-TA)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130113101","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It offers contactless communication, non line-of-sight readability, compactness, and low cost. Localization techniques and algorithms have been actively researched recently from accuracy point of view. However, less attention has been paid to the antenna and its effects on the achieved localization accuracy. Particularly, wearable antennas in human localization applications are key components affecting the achieved accuracy and reliability. In this paper, we elaborate on the material choice for wearable UHF RFID patch antennas. Two highly attractive and flexible conductive electro-textiles are discussed and compared: anisotropic embroidered textile structure and uniform commercially available copper fabric. A patch tag antenna is designed for each electro-textile to operate at 866 MHz. The on-body readability and Received Signal Strength (RSS) in office environment for the antennas are recorded and analyzed. Based on the results we decide on the antenna feasibility in localization applications.","PeriodicalId":143130,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE RFID Technology and Applications Conference (RFID-TA)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133726539","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
