The objects under test are illuminated by UWB-pulses and the scattered pulses are collected by an array of receiving antennas. The scattered pulses contain information about the geometrical properties as well as the dielectric properties; a multivariate calibration method is supposed to be able to separate these properties. A classification algorithm is applied prior to the multivariate calibration. It provides a classification into two classes, low or high permittivity. The statistical calibration method is then applied separately in each class. This leads to a significant improvement of the accuracy of the determination of the dielectric properties compared to processing without classification.","PeriodicalId":143107,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Ultra-Wideband (ICUWB)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127136569","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For these threshold crossing (TC) methods the key problem is the design of the threshold level to obtain the best possible ranging accuracy. Threshold design for TC methods is a difficult problem, and requires receiver noise power knowledge. We here propose a completely different approach, where there is no threshold and where the noise power knowledge is not required. Our blind and robust ToA estimation technique is based on information theoretic criteria (ITC). The proposed ToA algorithm is universal, in that it does not require any information about the channel or the noise power level, and it eliminates the need to set a predefined threshold. The performance of the proposed universal ToA estimator is evaluated in realistic multipath channels, revealing excellent performance and robustness.","PeriodicalId":143107,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Ultra-Wideband (ICUWB)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117229346","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A clear understanding on how impairments and system parameters affect detection and localization accuracy is fundamental for the WSR network design. We introduce a mathematical framework for the analysis of WSR network which allows to consider different scenarios, network topologies, and system configurations. We focus on the effects of ultra-wide bandwidth (UWB) time-of-arrival estimation on the localization accuracy. We present results for a case study of UWB monostatic radars network with application in logistics.","PeriodicalId":143107,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Ultra-Wideband (ICUWB)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117229894","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The IEEE 802.15.4a channel model is used where the channel is assumed to be Linear Time Invariant (LTI) and thus the problem of channel estimation becomes the estimation of the sparse channel taps and their delays. Since, the bandwidth of the signal is very large, Nyquist rate sampling is impractical, therefore, we propose to estimate the channel taps from the sub-sampled versions of the received signal profile. We adopt the Bayesian framework to estimate the channel support by incorporating the a priori multipath arrival time statistics. In the first approach, we adopt a two-step method by employing Compressive Sensing to obtain coarse estimates and then refine them by applying Maximum A Posteriori (MAP) criterion. In the second approach, we develop a Low-Complexity MAP (LC-MAP) estimator. The computational complexity is reduced by identifying nearly orthogonal clusters in the received profile and by leveraging the structure of the sensing matrix.","PeriodicalId":143107,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Ultra-Wideband (ICUWB)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126811614","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We consider TH-PPM (time-hopping pulse position modulation). We propose estimators based on the ML (maximum likelihood) criterion together with interference cancellation. We propose algorithms for SP (single-path) and MP (multipath) communication channels. We report simulation results and we conclude that the proposed estimators obtain smaller variance than the per-user ML estimator. Moreover, with well-chosen signature parameters, it is possible to reach the CRB (Cramèr-Rao bound) when multiple sources are transmitting in SP channels and values close to the CRB in MP channels. We also show that the interference cancellation technique makes the estimation robust against near-far situations.","PeriodicalId":143107,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Ultra-Wideband (ICUWB)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121830126","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Harsh propagation environments or non-line-of-sight (NLOS) situations lead to biased position estimates with high estimation errors. To overcome this problem, we propose a radar imaging based method to predict delays of dominant propagation paths. This is done in a three-step approach: First, a radar image of the environment is created using measured training data. We generate a scattering coefficient map with the large synthetic aperture of distributed and moving antennas. The training data can easily be obtained from channel estimates of a UWB communication system with mobile nodes. Second, the radar image is used to reconstruct path gains and path delays. Thus, the channel response is predicted for arbitrary transmitter and receiver positions. Finally, dominant multipath delays are extracted using WRELAX. The proposed algorithm is validated by anechoic chamber measurements with controlled reflectors. Moreover, an extensive measurement campaign in a laboratory/office environment shows that strong paths can be predicted with nanosecond accuracy in a real world scenario.","PeriodicalId":143107,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Ultra-Wideband (ICUWB)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123399432","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main idea of interference alignment is to design the pre-coder at each transmitter, so that each receiver can align all interference from undesired transmitters in interference subspaces by exploiting knowledge of the channel state information (CSI) of all transmission links. Currently, a closed-form solution for the pre-coding filters exists only for the case of up to three users and provides poor sum-rate performance compared to iterative algorithms. Furthermore, all available algorithms for interference alignment were investigated only for the case, where each transmitter sends only one data stream. In this paper, the MMSE-based interference alignment is exploited to improve the BER and sum-rate performance of the system especially in the low SNR regime. This paper focuses on a multiuser MIMO UWB system based on MB-OFDM with arbitrary number of independent data streams per user. The simulation results confirm that the MMSE-based interference alignment provides sum-rate and BER superior to Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) at marginal performance degradation.","PeriodicalId":143107,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Ultra-Wideband (ICUWB)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130006129","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, this trade-off will be deeply impacted by the characteristics of the backscattering, which involves both the propagation channel and the tag antenna mode behaviour. This work addresses the joint modelling of both, starting from rigorous electromagnetic principles. It highlights the necessity to combine the tag randomness with that of the channel, especially in the angular and polarization domains. It also sketches some routes towards this modelling.","PeriodicalId":143107,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Ultra-Wideband (ICUWB)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124140685","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
