The next generation of wireless systems will require more than the simple distinction between a LOS and a non-LOS (NLOS) link condition. The future short-range wireless communication and localization systems will require an exact environment identification in order to better set up all the services which the users require with a specific quality level. In this paper a new method for environment identification is proposed. This method is able to identify not only the LOS/NLOS condition but also the environment typology, i.e., if the propagation condition is typical of an office or a residential or an industrial area or outdoor, etc. If the environment in which the transmitter and the receiver are immersed is known, two main advantages can be reached: first, the localization of all the users is more accurate and, secondly, each receiver can be correctly configured in order to best adapt to the propagation conditions (cognitive approach) or to the network conditions (cooperative approach). Unlike the techniques discussed in the literature, the one proposed in this paper does not require any estimation, such as the estimation of the channel parameters. In the proposed structure, two identical MDAS are attached on the both sides of a dipole exciter which is composed of two linearly polarized stacked microstrip patches placed back to back and fed with balanced input power using unbalanced-to-balanced (balun) transformer. The proposed antenna structure where MDAS has overall height of 1λ0 was designed and fabricated to operate at 2.44GHz. Thereby, we avoid the respective drawbacks, in particular analog delay lines and complex algorithms for the reconstruction, thus, retain the low hardware complexity of CS-based detection and the low computational complexity of autocorrelation-based detection. We give an analytical analysis of CS-based differential detection and extend this scheme following the principle of decision-feedback differential detection. In IEEE 802.15.3c standard, a codebook based analog beamforming mechanism is adopted for its simplicity and feasibility. However, this simple beam sweep mechanism may not work properly in the presence of Co-Channel Interference (CCI) when dense spatial reuse is required. In this paper, an enhanced beamforming technique is proposed with mixed analog and digital beamforming structure for 60GHz Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system. Beam sweep mechanism with such as codebook based phased antenna array can be applied to analog beamforming for its hardware simplicity. On the other hand, more than one RF chains can be introduced to enable adaptive digital beamforming for improved performance and robustness. Different radio technologies complement each other and offer different data rates and coverage for different service requirements. In this context, Ultra-Wideband (UWB) arises as a potential access technology providing very high data rate access in short-range picocells. This paper analyses the possible use of WiMedia UWB as a network access technology. UWB capabilities are assessed and compared to other radio access technologies, i.e. 802.11, in terms of data rate and achievable throughput. This paper characterizes the multipath order based on captured channel realizations from a comprehensive indoor measurement campaign performed on the MIT campus. The multipath orders are extracted from channel realizations observed at a set of center frequency and bandwidth pairs in a variety of locations. It is shown that changes in bandwidth significantly impact the multipath order, and in general the behavior is nonlinear. We first propose separate models which are only a function of bandwidth, for each center frequency. Then we develop a more general joint model which takes into account the variations caused by changes in both center frequency and bandwidth. Based on our experiment, we found that there is a slight chance to meet the line-of-sight (LOS) at all the readers of RTLS in a realistic scenario. In the NLOS environment, there are two problems of packet-miss error and multi-path error as well. To compensate for the packet-miss error, this paper presents a new algorithm (PPTi), which uses previous time information before the time difference of arrival (TDOA) positioning technique calculates the coordinate of the target. We also employed the Kalman Filter (KF) to mitigate multi-path error.
