Their stabilization methods remain controversial and the external fixator is one of them. The objective of this study was to show the benefit of the external fixator in the management of these fractures. This was a retrospective study carried out between January 2017 and December 2020 at Owendo University Teaching Hospital. The study concerned all patients admitted for open leg fractures, treated and followed up in the department. We collected 31 patients including 22 men and 9 women. Their average age was 34.2 years (range 18-62 years). The age group from 31 to 50 was the most represented with 54.8% (n=17). Field workers constituted the socio-professional group most affected with 25.8% (n=8). Road traffic accidents (RTA) were the main sources of trauma with 83.9% (n=26). According to the Gustilo and Anderson classification, the type IIIa lesions were the most frequent with 61.2% (n=19). The majority of patients were treated on the 6th day (58.1%, n=18). Occurring in 38.7% (n=12), the complications encountered were infection and delayed union in 16.2% (n=5) each. The average time to consolidation was 23.6 weeks (range 15 -52 weeks). With an average follow-up of 10 months, the results evaluated, according to Ketenjian criteria, were excellent in 19.4% (n=6), very good in 41.9% (n=13), good in 22.6% (n =7) and bad in 6.4% (n=2), in others words 83.9% satisfactory results. the results obtained are generally satisfactory but can be improved if we simplify the methods of providing the external fixator to needy patients.","PeriodicalId":14302,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Orthopaedics Sciences","volume":"121 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140525658","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"A comparative study of functional outcome of single dose intra-lesional platelet rich plasma injection versus single dose corticosteroid injection for plantar fasciitis","authors":"Dr. Mouneshwaran R, Dr. Vijayaragavan R","doi":"10.22271/ortho.2024.v10.i1c.3516","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.22271/ortho.2024.v10.i1c.3516","url":null,"abstract":"Background: Plantar fasciitis is a common cause of heel pain. In some cases, it can lead to significant morbidity and then invasive procedures like Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injection and/or intralesional steroid injection are required, in whom conservative treatment is unresponsive. It is still controversial whether PRP is more effective in reducing pain and also improving the function compared to intralesional steroid. Aims & Objectives: To determine efficacy of single dose Intralesional-PRP injection and single dose Intralesional-Corticosteroid injection, also to compare the efficacy between the both in Plantar fasciitis based on the functional outcome by Visual Analogue Pain scale (VAS) at end of 2weeks, 3rd months and 6th months. Methodology: A comparative study on skeletally mature patients with plantar fasciitis who had underwent conservative therapy but failed, were randomized into 2 groups: PRP and Steroid group. Using Visual Analog Scale (VAS), participants were assessed for pain on the Day of presentation, and then after therapy at 2 weeks, 3 months and 6 months. Results: Total of 60 patients were included in the study and randomized into 2 groups -30 for steroid group and 30 for PRP group. Results showed that VAS of PRP group was significantly lower than that of steroid group at 2weeks, 3months and 6 months. PRP was associated with great improvement in VAS score at 6months compared to steroid injection. The result and difference were more pronounced as the time from injection increased and maximal benefit was observed at 6 months follow-up. None of the patients needed a repeat injection at 6 months. Conclusion: PRP injections provide better pain relief and function, compared to corticosteroids, in patients with plantar fasciitis. On comparison with previous studies, results were almost similar that is superiority of PRP over steroid injection in plantar fasciitis.","PeriodicalId":14302,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Orthopaedics Sciences","volume":"11 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140524237","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Treatment method includes immobilization, steroid injections and surgical intervention. The aim of this study was to determine the outcome of corticosteroid injection in patients with De Quervain`s tenosynovitis. Materials and Methods: In this study a total of 48 patients with De Quervain`s tenosynovitis confirmed by clinical examination, USG and pain interfering with daily activities of life, managed with corticosteroid injection were taken into study. Treatment efficacy was measured by assessing reduction in severity of pain and tenderness on the radial side of wrist and negative Finkelstein test. The severity of pain was noted on Visual analogue scale (VAS 0-10) before and after intervention. Results: At 3 weeks, short-term responses included complete or nearly complete control of signs and symptoms in 28 (58.33%) patients, with zero VAS. 11 (22.92%) patients experienced partial response. Only 9 (18.75%) patients failed to show significant changes after the first injection. At six weeks follow-up 45 (93.75%) patients were symptoms free and fully satisfied with the results. We found no recurrence except 3 (6.25%) in this series of patients after 24 weeks of follow-up. Conclusion: We conclude that one or two local steroid injections in the first dorsal compartment leads to early improvement in patients with de Quervain's tenosynovitis.","PeriodicalId":14302,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Orthopaedics Sciences","volume":"1 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140516530","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
