First, the state space equations of the motor are established. Then the H∞ control theory is applied to design a robust controller which allows mass variation of the moving part ranging from 0 to 100 percent of nominal load. The influences of input signals with different frequency characteristics on transfer function calculation are analyzed and a suitable input is selected to perform the evaluation of transformers' insulation conditions by transfer function method. Three different types of transformer faults are simulated in this paper. The hybrid AC-DC supply generator (HADSG) is a good solution. Several independent Y-connected windings are equipped on the stator of HADSG, one delivers AC power and the others, termed DC windings, are connected to the bridge rectifier. Methods of parameter measurement considering DC winding resistances are presented for a typical HADSG with a 12-phase DC winding in this paper. The d-axis self and mutual reactances can be acquired by various short-circuit tests for one or two three-phase windings. Relevant formulas are derived for calculating the d-axis parameters through measuring the short-circuit currents and voltages of all open three-phase windings. According to the voltages and currents measured in slip-tests for AC and DC windings, the q-axis self and mutual reactances can be obtained. This is the major challenge of electric engineering in different fields. The role of engineers is to integrate science, technology and the business world and hence to make things happen. Engineering is about finding ways to modify the universe and life in order to extend our biological reach, the quality of our lives, and the niches in which we can survive. Technology is the means of improving human life by the application of all knowledge and experience. Innovation is the successful introduction of something new. It is not enough to pursue the whys of nature or to find how we can modify nature. We must also decide what we should do. If engineering is to have a strong say about the future, it needs to become integrated with science, society and humanistic concerns. 21/sup st/ century engineers will need to be astute makers, trusted innovators, agents of change, master integrators, enterprise enablers, technology stewards and knowledge handlers. Engineering should venture to develop new capabilities and a broader sense of mission. We should integrate what we know, what we can do and what we should do. We should also be able to integrate the biological organism, society and machines.
