Traditional dispersal was concentrated between MENA countries, and from MENA countries to Europe or North America. However, since 2011, as migration from the Middle East hasbeen dealt as human security and national security agendas of host countries, migration destinations for nationals from MENA countries have diversified. \u0000T the number of immigrants has increased from MENA countries to Korea after the Arab Spring. Therefore, based on international law, this study examines how to understand migration from the MENA countries after the Arab Spring and analyses the influx of Yemenis and Afghans which had a great impact on Korean society in 2018 and 2021. And the overseas migration of nationals and foreigners continues steadily from this region. Within the region, Tunisia and Egypt are the places where mass protests broke out due to the economic crisis and political issues in early 2011. However, there has been no significant change in emigration flow since then. Accordingly, this study presents the migration flows in Tunisia and Egypt. Then it conducts a comparative analysis to examine the characteristics of the migration flows of the two countries. The two countries show differences in various aspects, such as destination countries, patterns of migration, features of migrant populations, and current national migration policies. However, at the same time, there are similarities in implementing government policies to encourage the overseas migration of its people and the variety of migration destinations, especially of highly skilled and highly educated workers heading to North America among the younger generation. In addition to the economic causes considered in this study, it can be inferred that migration patterns may appear differently depending on colonial, cultural, and social characteristics in that migration patterns are different between Tunisia, which belongs to the Maghreb region, and Egypt, which does not belong to the Maghreb region.","PeriodicalId":142615,"journal":{"name":"The Institute of Middle Eastern Affairs","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131203105","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The fall of the Baath regime had been a distant hope for many in Iraq, who believed the regime would survive for many more years. The invasion produced winners and losers, and Iraq was unprepared for what would unfold in the following years. This paper investigates the aftermath of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, considering how and why U.S. forces changed Iraq's political fabric and the whole region. The article explores the different factions within Iraq and their attitude toward the U.S. occupation. It mainly compares how events played out differently in the north and southern regions of the country, arguing that the different outcomes resulted from Iraq's previous political culture, including past systems of government, grievances, a politics of mistrust, and a suppressed identity crisis.","PeriodicalId":142615,"journal":{"name":"The Institute of Middle Eastern Affairs","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114842028","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

People tend to reveal their cultural awareness and traditional values through the way they use space, as space is a tangible expression of an intangible culture. The case of diwaniya in Kuwait, where the socialization culture is mostly active, was used in this study to analyze the history and origin of the space of majlis, its social functions, role, and evolution over time. What distinguishes Kuwaiti diwaniya from other Gulf countries is as follows: first, it is a private and safe space from government intervention and surveillance, and therefore, a space where political activities occur. Second, Kuwaiti diwaniya is not a revival of traditional culture in the modern era; it functions as an organic space, and therefore, it evolves and transforms according to the social context. Based on a review of extant literature, this study traced the evolution process of diwaniya and its unique characteristics from the period prior to the formation of the state of Kuwait to the current era of modernization and digitalization.","PeriodicalId":142615,"journal":{"name":"The Institute of Middle Eastern Affairs","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132704620","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Saudi government has used museums to form a historical identity that can unite people through collective memory and induce them to feel a sense of belonging to the country. The exhibition narrative of the Al Masmak Museum conveys how the Saudi royal family, through their leadership and Islam, unified the Arabian Peninsula and built Saudi Arabia. Through this, the museum encourages Saudi citizens to be patriotic and especially loyal to the Saudi royal family.","PeriodicalId":142615,"journal":{"name":"The Institute of Middle Eastern Affairs","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127036100","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The theme of the Greek story Oedipus is “killing a father”, and the Persian myth of Rustem and Shihrab is “murder of a son”, with contrasting motives. The lack of a father unites the two narratives, despite their seeming contradictions. We can witness how the novel is born from the myth as the main character Cem's life crossovers with the myths in various ways. Both novels and myths reflect the universal love-hate relationship between father and son, but what is new is that Pamuk reinterprets motifs such as father-son love, conflicts and death through the main characters of modern novels.","PeriodicalId":142615,"journal":{"name":"The Institute of Middle Eastern Affairs","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114763314","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to ask research questions, a questionnaire survey was conducted on 30 Arabic learners (First Year, 2nd Semester) in Hankuk University of Foreign Studies on receptive and productive vocabulary knowledge tests and vocabulary learning strategies. The results are as follows. \u0000First, receptive knowledge size is bigger than productive knowledge size, and there is a positive relationship between the two. Second, receptive and productive knowledge size turned out to be related to the all subcategories of vocabulary learning strategies. Accordingly, the bigger the receptive and productive knowledge size, the more diverse vocabulary learning strategies were being used. Third, the students whose receptive vocabulary knowledge size was big used all available vocabulary learning strategies compared to those with low receptive vocabulary knowledge size. The students with big vocabulary knowledge size showed differences in five subcategories of vocabulary learning, excluding social strategy under meaning discovery. Fourth, the learning group with big differences in receptive and productive vocabulary knowledge size, showed differences in five vocabulary learning strategies compared to the group with big size except for social strategies in meaning discovery strategies.","PeriodicalId":142615,"journal":{"name":"The Institute of Middle Eastern Affairs","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126465101","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The changes come amid structural changes caused by the U.S.-China competition and growing instability in the Middle East yielded by regional conflicts, which clearly indicate that the UAE no longer relies on cooperation with Western or Arab countries and intends to take the lead in diplomacy and build its own line. This change in diplomatic movement is due to the growth of national power and the UAE's desire to pursue interests according to changes in the security environment. It is a strategic choice to expand its influence in the region as a 'revisionist'. The UAE, which has entered the international community in earnest, is making good use of its national power and geopolitical advantages as a pivot state. It is transforming into an active and influential country by breaking down the oil-dependent economy, diversifying security cooperation countries and fields, and strengthening its soft-power.","PeriodicalId":142615,"journal":{"name":"The Institute of Middle Eastern Affairs","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129437219","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is part of a diplomatic strategy to enhance the country's image as a ‘diplomacy that moves the mind’ of the public. Turkey is also actively utilizing cultural diplomacy in line with this trend. Accordingly, this study aims to analyze the potential of Turkey's cultural diplomacy and to look into its implications for Korea. This study analyzed language and cultural education, academic exchange support programs, gastronomic diplomacy, and drama contents as Turkey's soft power promotion areas. Along with this analysis, this study is a plan for Turkey's cultural diplomacy strategy regarding Korea. First, Turkey's various soft power capabilities are utilized. Second, expand the target of diplomacy and implement a continuous cultural diplomacy strategy. Third, it suggests to actively utilize the online cultural exchange platform.","PeriodicalId":142615,"journal":{"name":"The Institute of Middle Eastern Affairs","volume":"265 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113984014","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
