It can be asymptomatic or mild infection but can lead to many complications especially during pregnancy. Recurrence is also frequently seen in women suffering from bacterial vaginosis. This infection usually occurs when normal lactobacillus flora in vagina is disrupted and replaced by pathogens. Administration of probiotics will restore normal vaginal flora and maintain normal pH and it could prove to be a reliable alternative to antibiotics in future. Objective: To assess the effect of supplementation of standard antibiotic therapy with oral probiotics (Lactobacillus) for treatment of bacterial vaginosis. Material Methods: It was an open labeled prospective study in which 100 women diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis were randomly divided into two groups. Diagnosis was made using Amsel’s criteria and Nugent scoring was done. Group A was given Oral Metronidazole, 400 mg BD for 7 days along with oral probiotic tablet containing Lactobacillus rhamnosus BD for 6 weeks whereas Group B was administered Oral Metronidazole, 400 mg BD for 7 days. Patients were assessed at 7 days for symptomatic improvement and again at the end of 6 weeks using Nugent scores. Results obtained were then compared. Results: Out of all patients 2 patients in Group A and 5 patients in Group B could not complete the study. At the end of 7 days, there was improvement in symptoms ie decrease in itching, odour and discharge. There was a significant difference in mean Nugent score before and after treatment between group A and group B at the end of 6 weeks. Conclusion: This study concluded that improvement in patients taking probiotics along with standard antibiotic therapy was significantly more as compared to antibiotics alone.","PeriodicalId":14010,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Medical and Dental Sciences","volume":"214 1","pages":"1628-1631"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78494135","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objectives: To evaluate the prescription trends of anti-hypertensive drugs in PMW. Methods: This was an observational, cross sectional study conducted over a period of 1 year, on hypertensive PMW. The prescriptions were evaluated for antihypertensive drug use patterns and also as per WHO core drug indicators. Results: 21.82% of prescriptions had monotherapy, amongst which angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB) (10%) and individually, telmisartan (5.45%) were most commonly prescribed. Majority of prescriptions had two drug therapy (44.09%), among which ARB + beta-blockers (BB) (20.91%) and individually, Telmisartan + Metoprolol (13.64%) were most frequently prescribed. ARB + Diuretic (DI) (9.55%) was the most common fixed drug combination (FDC) prescribed. ARB + BB + DI (10.45%), ARB + 2DI + BB (4.09%) and ARB + 2DI + BB + Calcium channel blocker (1.82%) were most commonly prescribed three, four and ≥five drug combinations, respectively. Hypolipidemic drugs (60.45%) were maximally co-prescribed. Percentage of drugs prescribed by generic name was 4.63% and from essential drug list was 32.62%. Conclusions: A high trend of polypharmacy was observed in hypertensive PMW. HT, being a multifactorial disease, deserves a multidisciplinary and a comprehensive approach in the care of this population subgroup. Knowledge of prescription pattern and thus the rational utilisation of drugs will help achieve better control rates of HT and hence curb down the burden of CVDs in PMW.","PeriodicalId":14010,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Medical and Dental Sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":"1594-1603"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82373451","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Congenital bleeding disorders especially pose a diagnostic challenge to the clinician because of their rarity and the need to be differentiated from the other common causes of bleeding in children. We present a case of an infant presenting with bleeding symptoms early in his life (since 5 months of age) which was initially thought to be immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) with low platelet count. No response to steroids and further evaluation by platelet aggregometry and flowcytometry led to the correct diagnosis – Bernard soulier syndrome(BSS). Though, there is no specific treatment available for this rare bleeding disorder, however it is imperative to have arrived at correct diagnosis in order to save unnecessary therapy and to take due precautions for prevention of bleeding.","PeriodicalId":14010,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Medical and Dental Sciences","volume":"7 1","pages":"1642-1645"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83606112","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The management and treatment plan of these entities depends mainly on this report. The disparity in incisional and excisional biopsy report is an important area of concern affecting the patient’s management. Objective: Aim of the study was to compare retrospectively the incisional (presurgical) and excisional (post-surgical) biopsy reports of proven cases of carcinomas. Material and Methods: A total of 98 excisional biopsy cases of proved oral carcinoma were selected. Both incisional and excisional biopsy reports were retrieved. Sex predilection, Frequency of site of tumor, correlation between incisional and excisional biopsy, type of biopsy and change in the status were studied and statistically analyzed. Significance between Pre-biopsy and post biopsy was statistically analyzed using Chi-Square Tests. Results: There was concordance of 66.3% in incisional and excisional biopsy report. 33.7% cases showed disparity. Upgrading in the excisional biopsy report was noted in 15.30% cases. Downgrading was noted in 14.26% cases. When statistically analyzed the difference in pre-and post-biopsy was statistically insignificant. Conclusion: Incisional biopsy was found to have certain restriction in the valuation of Oral lesions. Clinicians should be vigilant the possibility of under diagnosis from incisional biopsy and even undetected carcinoma in the incisional specimen, especially of nonhomogeneous lesions.","PeriodicalId":14010,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Medical and Dental Sciences","volume":"66 1","pages":"1632-1636"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85632705","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
