This paper utilized a comprehensive survey of 41 industrial facilities to characterize their wastewater quality parameters and to assess their wastewater toxicity. The 41 factories were grouped under eleven industrial categories. Microtox relative toxicity test results indicated that industrial wastewater in Kuwait are mostly very toxic to toxic with the exception of farms wastewater which was found to be slightly toxic. The highest ranking toxic wastewaters where found to be metal forming, printing, dairy, slaughterhouses, petrochemical, poultry, food, paper and packaging, beverage, and construction materials industries in order. Among the contributing factors to the toxicity of industrial wastewater are temperature, pH, metals, COD, TOC, NH3, TPH, phenol, and BTEX.","PeriodicalId":13980,"journal":{"name":"International journal of environmental science and development","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67450592","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These abandoned sites are generally characterized by water-filled pit lakes surrounded with disturbed and exposed soils and sediments containing elevated values of heavy metals and other environmental contaminants. Previous studies with abandoned mines in the Philippines have initiated the use of integrated methods for the assessment of existing abandoned mine site conditions as a tool for decision-making. To further provide a numerical basis for rehabilitation prioritization, this paper aimed to utilize the modified Historic Mine Site Scoring System (HMS-SS) for physical and environmental hazard assessment of the abandoned mercury mine located in Barangay Sta. Lourdes, Puerto Princesa City, Philippines and to produce hazard classification maps based on the generated scores. Results identified the pit lake to be extremely hazardous physically, however, the liquid material (rainfall accumulation in the pit) yielded very low environmental hazard scores with only a few identified points that exceed the regulatory limit. Moreover, the two (2) identified mine tailings sites were found to be physically moderately hazardous but are categorized as extremely hazardous for the environmental aspect. The hazard scoring, coupled with the integrated environmental methods for characterization and development of hazard maps, is recommended as a scientific and quantitative basis for providing decisions in priority of actions to be taken with regards to abandoned mine sites.","PeriodicalId":13980,"journal":{"name":"International journal of environmental science and development","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67451181","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Water parameters of total suspended solids (TSS), dissolved oxygen (DO), biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total organic carbon (TOC), nitrite (N-NO2-), nitrate (N-NO3-), ammonium (N-NH4+), orthophosphate (PO43--P), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP), turbidity (turb), pH; temperature (T), sulfate (SO42-), electrical conductivity (EC), chloride (Cl-), coliform, and iron (Fe) were used for the assessment. The findings revealed that most of the water parameters of TSS, DO, BOD, COD, TOC, N-NH4+, N-NO2-, Cl-, Fe, and coliforms exceeded the limits of QCVN 08-MT:2015/BTNMT, column A2, B1. The water quality in Hau River was better than the other locations. Saline intrusion has become the concern for surface quality in the study area. PCA showed that five PCs explained 87.9% of the variation of surface water quality in the study area and the parameters including BOD, N-NH4+, TN, TOC, Cl-, TSS, SO42-, Fe and coliforms were the main variables influencing surface water quality in the study area. Potential sources of water pollution are saline intrusion, hydrological regime, runoff, agriculture, industry, and domestic activities.","PeriodicalId":13980,"journal":{"name":"International journal of environmental science and development","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67452070","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Batch experiment based on the removal of heavy metals from synthesized wastewater was conducted so as to investigate the influence of contact time and porosity on the metal removal efficiency and adsorption capacity of the geofilters. Adsorption kinetics was evaluated using Lagergren's pseudo-first-order model, Ho's pseudo-second order and Elovich models. Effect of contact time between geopolymer and wastewater was investigated within the first 15 minutes of adsorption with time interval of 3 minutes. The highest percentages for the removal of Fe2+, Cu2+, Al3+ and Ni2+ions with 1%H2O2 – FA-BOFS based geopolymer obtained after 15minutes were 100%, 86.87%, 84.64% and 84.63% respectively. The trend based on metal absorption capacities in an ascending order given as Fe >Cu>Ni>Al. The adsorption capacity of metal within the 15miniutes was relatively constant possibly due to sufficient number of sites upon which metal ion adsorption may have possibly occurred on the outer surface of geopolymers irrespective of H2O2 content. Metal ion adsorption rates in the current study strongly adhered to the Ho's pseudo-second-order model based on linear regression fitting method. The correlation coefficients R2 were 0.999. FA-BOFS based geopolymer can be considered as emergent and versatile material with inherent chemical microstructural property able to remove heavy metals from polluted effluent and metalliferous drainage.","PeriodicalId":13980,"journal":{"name":"International journal of environmental science and development","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67452651","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) has a considerable amount of GHG emissions (accounted for 20,68% of total GHG in Vietnam). The main GHG sources in HCMC are mainly due to the numerous private vehicles used and the increasing rate of factories. Therefore, to reduce the GHG of the city from these two sources, the bottom-up GHG detailed emission inventory (EI) for major sources must be carried out to determine the potential GHG emission sources. The objectives of this research are 1) to develop detailed GHG EI for HCMC and 2) to develop measures to reduce GHG for HCMC. It is the first bottom-up GHG emission inventory study that applied the EMISENS model to calculate the GHG emission from traffic and industrial sources. The total GHG emission of HCMC in 2019 was 58,272,149 tons CO2eq/year. The primary emission of GHG in HCMC is from on-road traffic (13,484,958 tons CO2eq/year) and the industry sector (17,612,942 tons CO2eq/year). Motorcycles contribute the highest (63%) GHG emission from on-road transportation, whereas the chemical industry contributes the highest (63%) GHG emission from industry sources, followed by the sectors of Paper Production (17.3%), Textile (16.1%), and Metal production (14.7%). The study also developed technical and management solutions to achieve the goal of GHG emission reduction for HCMC and contribute to the National target of net-zero GHG. The main management solutions are based on implementing a Carbon Reporting System for industries and buildings in the city.","PeriodicalId":13980,"journal":{"name":"International journal of environmental science and development","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67452921","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Generally, onsite systems continuously work under significant variations in both quantity and quality of the influent wastewater. Therefore, their suitability needs to be assessed before installation and operation to ensure their suitability and sustainability. This paper aims to define a set of context-specific criteria to assist in selecting the best onsite wastewater treatment system and to break down these criteria into measurable parameters. Furthermore, the developed multi-criteria assessment tool was validated using the results of the performance monitoring of a selected wastewater treatment system. This work is important since the selection of onsite systems, in many cases, is done based on declared performance by the supplier and the costs involved.","PeriodicalId":13980,"journal":{"name":"International journal of environmental science and development","volume":"18 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67453095","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Measurements of hourly particulate matter concentrations were recorded by the National Meteorology and Hydrology Service of Peru (SENAMHI) at five surface air quality stations. The profiles of PM10 concentrations are related to traffic behavior, showing high levels of concentrations at peak hours, while the PM2.5 profiles are flatter and better related to traffic in February (summer). The decrease in relative humidity between 80 to 65% in the mornings has a greater effect on the increase in PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations in February than in July (winter), and the increase in relative humidity between 65 to 80 % in the afternoon, it has a greater effect on the decrease in the concentration of PM2.5 in February than in July. The air quality in the north (PPD and CRB stations) and east (SJL station) of the Metropolitan Area of Lima (MAL) are the most polluted. The factors that relate PM10 concentrations with the Peruvian standard in February at these stations were 2.79, 1.78 and 1.26, and in July 2.74, 1.28 and 1.36 respectively. The highest and lowest variability of PM10 and PM2.5 in February and July occurred in the northern area (PPD and SMP stations).","PeriodicalId":13980,"journal":{"name":"International journal of environmental science and development","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44946071","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The city of Marrakech, experience an important temporal variability in rainfall and an increasing trend of temperature during the last five decades. However, the evolution of rainfall is more contrasted by a downward trend in Marrakech, it is also distinguished by alarming clues of global warming, like the number of hot days and heat waves. This paper evaluates the effect of climate change on Vegetation cover (evaluated by NDVI) in the Tensift region, Morocco. Temperature, rainfall data, and vegetation cover were used in this analysis. The effect of climate change on vegetation was studied using a linear regression analysis method, to explore the relationship between vegetation dynamics and climate factors (the trend of vegetation dynamics for the years between 1973 -2019). Analysis of annual data, for the temperature and vegetation cover shows a low regression coefficient value of 0.3057 and, rainfall and vegetation cover analysis show regression coefficient value of 0.7024. Monthly periods analysis showed that the most important period is the one between December and May where the regression coefficient value is 0.6568. In more details the period between March and May shows regression coefficient value of 0.4685, the period between December and February shows regression coefficient value of 0.434, the period between September and November shows regression coefficient value of 0.0734. The study reveals that, rainfall is significantly related with vegetation cover, especially the period between December and May, more than the temperature does in Tensift region.","PeriodicalId":13980,"journal":{"name":"International journal of environmental science and development","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67448314","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper deals with a physical simulation on an off-take channel for understanding the flow and sediment distribution in the vicinity. Laboratory-based test runs have been carried out by changing the discharges and the angles off-take. A total of eighteen test runs have been conducted for three discharge conditions with three off-take angles. Two equations for predicting water and sediment discharge ratios have been proposed as a function of Froude number, channel geometry and off-take angel. Flow visualizations have also been carried out in the vicinity of the off-take for understanding erosion and sedimentation pattern. Flow and sediment movement patterns were carefully observed during the simulation and four distinguished zone formations have been noted in the vicinity. Finally, validations of the developed equations have been done with the field data from selected river off-take systems of Bangladesh. Validation results of field data show mean discrepancy ratios of 0.83 for the discharge equation and 0.89 for sediment equation during low flow.","PeriodicalId":13980,"journal":{"name":"International journal of environmental science and development","volume":"12 1","pages":"35-41"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67448838","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
