While the suppression of void growth under triaxial compression is a known mechanical principle, this research establishes how macroscopic geometric compliance can be used to actively control the local triaxiality history during high-strain-rate impacts. Rather than treating parameter sensitivity and structural mass as isolated variables, this study shows that increasing global structural flexibility physically forces the local dynamic stress tensor into a compressive state, preventing fracture. Utilizing a finite element model of a Trent 1000-class turbofan, an iterative geometric refinement was performed to minimize casing mass without compromising energy absorption capability. The Johnson–Cook (J–C) plasticity and damage laws for the Ti-6Al-4V alloy served as the baseline, with a conservative limit model developed to account for identified ±5% calibration uncertainties in thermal softening ( <jats:italic toggle=\"yes\">m</jats:italic> ) and strain rate sensitivity ( <jats:italic toggle=\"yes\">C</jats:italic> ). Numerical results demonstrate that a 6.3% reduction in casing mass is achievable while maintaining a factor of safety (FS) of 1.25 under nominal loading and 1.66 under conservative material assumptions. The analysis reveals that the optimized, more compliant geometry facilitates beneficial cycles of triaxial compression near −0.7, which suppresses void nucleation and prevents catastrophic perforation. This study provides a validated engineering framework for the design of lightweight, damage-tolerant containment systems that remain resilient even under unfavorable constitutive calibration scenarios.","PeriodicalId":13837,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Damage Mechanics","volume":"22 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":4.2,"publicationDate":"2026-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148538862","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The framework achieves its advances through three key innovations. First, polygonal meshes are adopted to replace conventional quadrilateral and triangular discretization, thereby effectively improving geometric adaptability for complex configurations. Second, scaled boundary shape functions derived from the Laplace's equation in the scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM) are embedded into the discontinuous Galerkin weak form of the peridynamic momentum equation. This coupling converts the nonlocal double integrals of PD into a matrix operation form similar to standard finite element methods. Third, an effective boundary correction scheme is developed, which calibrates the micromodulus function by maintaining strain energy density consistency between PD and classical continuum mechanics. Systematic validation through elastic wave propagation, dynamic crack branching, and Kalthoff–Winkler impact tests demonstrates that the framework offers superior excellent control, <jats:italic toggle=\"yes\">δ</jats:italic> -convergence, and m-convergence, collectively confirming its accuracy, convergence, and reliability in dynamic fracture simulation. The current framework is established and validated for two-dimensional problems. Future work will focus on extending this method to three-dimensional cases and multiphysics coupling analyses.","PeriodicalId":13837,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Damage Mechanics","volume":"4 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":4.2,"publicationDate":"2026-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148538863","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The formulation is based on Euler–Bernoulli beam theory, while the nanobeam–substrate interaction is represented by a Winkler foundation. Damage is introduced through a partially degraded ceramic phase, whereas the metal phase remains intact. Three effective-property models, namely the Voigt, Reuss, and proposed formulations, are used to describe the damaged FG material response. The governing equations are derived using the principle of virtual work, and analytical solutions are obtained for the static bending response. The results show that damage reduces effective stiffness and increases bending deflection, while higher ceramic content and substrate stiffness enhances the overall rigidity. The proposed model yields physically admissible predictions bounded by the Voigt and Reuss limits, demonstrating its consistency for damaged FG nanobeam–substrate systems.","PeriodicalId":13837,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Damage Mechanics","volume":"30 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":4.2,"publicationDate":"2026-07-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148432169","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present study establishes a comprehensive peridynamic (PD) framework to model dynamic damage of PBX with sensitivity analysis of model parameters. The PD model successfully captured the various characteristics of PBX damage evolution: energetic crystal damage dominated under low-velocity impacts (20 m/s), while interfacial damage contributions increased substantially at higher velocities (40–60 m/s). Moreover, the importance of the total nine PD model parameters belonging to three different materials regarding total bond damage and damage modes (trans-granular/inter-granular) under 20–60 m/s impact loading is quantified based on the established three-dimensional PD model of steel-encased PBX. The Kriging surrogate model from PD model parameters to PBX damage is also constructed to decrease the computational cost. The sensitivity analysis revealed that binder failure strain exerted significant influence on total mechanical damage at different velocities. Notably, Young's modulus of energetic crystal demonstrated strong cross-mode effects at elevated velocities, governing both trans-granular crack initiation and inter-granular debonding, thereby emerging as a critical constitutive parameter for relatively high impact velocity. The current study offers a useful computational framework to evaluate how the uncertainty of PBX properties impacts its dynamic damage response.","PeriodicalId":13837,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Damage Mechanics","volume":"42 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":4.2,"publicationDate":"2026-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148432172","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the gap-opening–closing behavior of SC structural joints introduces contact discontinuities that conventional finite-element methods cannot simulate accurately or efficiently. This study presents a vector form intrinsic finite element (VFIFE)-based element to simulate the seismic response of SC beam–column joints. Two numerical models, representing T-shaped and cross-shaped joints, were developed using a novel VFIFE-link (VL) element. The proposed element enables accurate representation of the gap opening–closing mechanism, substantially improving the capability of the method to address complex structural configurations. The accuracy and reliability of the simulation framework were systematically validated through pseudo-dynamic tests, demonstrating its robustness in reproducing realistic structural responses. In addition, the influence of pre-stressed tendons on structural performance was quantitatively evaluated, providing important insights into the governing mechanical mechanisms. Overall, the integrated VL element shows strong potential for scalable application in similar structural simulations, indicating its value for advancing computational structural mechanics.","PeriodicalId":13837,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Damage Mechanics","volume":"42 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":4.2,"publicationDate":"2026-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148429147","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, effectively balancing competing performance parameters remains critical to maximizing their overall structural capabilities and meeting practical engineering requirements. To address this challenge, this study presents a multi-objective optimization framework for the design of carbon/Kevlar fiber-reinforced composite laminates, with a focus on the influence of ply material and stacking sequence on tensile behavior under load. Initially, optimal Latin hypercube sampling (LHS) was employed to generate training samples, and a corresponding simulation database was established via finite element analysis to construct a surrogate model. A novel optimization framework was then developed by integrating a Kriging surrogate model with a hybrid strength Pareto evolutionary algorithm 2–multi-objective particle swarm optimization (SPEA2-MOPSO) algorithm and the technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS). Within this framework, the ply sequence and material type served as decision variables, while tensile strength, tensile modulus, and elongation at break were considered as optimization objectives. The research results show that the finite element simulation using the progressive damage model was verified by the tensile test, which confirmed the accuracy of damage prediction and revealed the synergistic effect among tensile performance parameters. A comparative analysis of three optimization algorithms, namely MOPSO, SPEA2, and the hybrid SPEA2-MOPSO, demonstrated the superior accuracy and efficiency of the hybrid approach in solving complex multi-objective problems. Finally, the application of the TOPSIS method enabled the identification of optimal trade-off solutions tailored to various engineering priorities, providing practical guidance for structural design decisions.","PeriodicalId":13837,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Damage Mechanics","volume":"33 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":4.2,"publicationDate":"2026-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148432171","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Initially, Two-dimensional dynamic caustic experiments were utilized to assess the dynamic behavior of blast-induced cracks under various <jats:italic toggle=\"yes\">a</jats:italic> configurations. 3D PMMA column model experiments and CT scans were conducted to characterize blasting-induced cracks and assess the directional fracture capability of slotted cartridges. The laboratory findings were validated through field tests. The results indicated that different <jats:italic toggle=\"yes\">a</jats:italic> could consistently produce directional cracks, and the longest secondary crack was longer when <jats:italic toggle=\"yes\">a</jats:italic> was below 180°. The magnitude of superimposed stress waves generated during the propagation of the two primary cracks determined the length of the longest secondary crack, while the size of stress waves altered the angle between the longest secondary crack and the primary cracks. The <jats:italic toggle=\"yes\">a</jats:italic> is inversely proportional to the damage in the non-slot regions. The 3D PMMA column model experiments further validated the findings from the 2D dynamic caustic experiments. An increased <jats:italic toggle=\"yes\">a</jats:italic> resulted in gradual decreases in the fractal dimension, damage value, and surface area of cracks. Field tests demonstrated that selecting slot angles that match the profile can effectively control over-excavation and under-excavation, thereby substantially improving blast hole utilization efficiency.","PeriodicalId":13837,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Damage Mechanics","volume":"12 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":4.2,"publicationDate":"2026-07-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148401521","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The deformation, strength, and failure characteristics of the tuff specimen were investigated through uniaxial compression tests, stress–seepage coupling triaxial compression tests under low-temperature curing conditions and nuclear magnetic resonance analysis. A damage constitutive model for the tuff specimen considering curing temperature was established. Results show that low temperatures significantly promote the development and interconnection of pores and fissures within the tuff specimen. Low-temperature and stress–seepage coupling increase the number of pores and fissures and drive their growth toward larger sizes. The tuff specimen undergoes compaction, elastic deformation, plastic yielding, and failure under triaxial compression. As temperature decreases, failure transitions from simple shear to combined shear-tensile failure, with extended compaction and shortened plastic yielding phases, leading to enhanced brittleness. A low temperature–load coupling damage variable was introduced based on nuclear magnetic resonance porosity and the Weibull distribution function, effectively modeling the stress–strain relationship and strength characteristics of the tuff specimen under low-temperature and stress–seepage coupling, with a good fit between experimental and theoretical.","PeriodicalId":13837,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Damage Mechanics","volume":"24 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":4.2,"publicationDate":"2026-07-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148393898","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Existing damage models often have difficulty representing the full deformation process in a physically consistent manner, particularly in the initial compaction stage. Building upon the logistic damage equation derived from the elastic modulus method and incorporating the model of insect population dynamics, this study establishes a unified dynamical equation coupling damage accumulation and damage suppression. Two coordinate translation formulas are introduced to calculate <jats:italic toggle=\"yes\">D</jats:italic> according to the physical mechanisms governing compaction and postcompaction damage growth, from which a piecewise full range stress–strain constitutive relation is constructed. Utilizing experimental data from eight types of rocks, parameter fitting and model validation are performed using MATLAB. Results demonstrate that the model accurately captures the complete stress–strain response. Furthermore, through nonlinear dynamical systems analysis, the stable states, bifurcation behavior, and critical catastrophe conditions in damage evolution are intuitively revealed. This overcomes existing difficulties, such as the challenge of solving complex differential equations and the lack of intuitiveness in understanding parameter coupling effects, achieving a unification of the rock damage process from the macro to meso and back to macro scales. It reflects the profound mathematical dynamical nature underlying the mechanical behavior and establishes a bidirectional confirmation from mathematical logic to physical essence. This study provides a new theoretical framework and tool for rock damage mechanics, possessing significant theoretical importance and engineering applicability.","PeriodicalId":13837,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Damage Mechanics","volume":"33 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":4.2,"publicationDate":"2026-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148379738","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Experimental tests and nonlinear finite element analyses were conducted to evaluate the influence of PLA confinement on the axial compressive behaviour of concrete cylinders. The results demonstrate that PLA strips can increase compressive strength with notable improvements in stiffness and ductility depending on strip configuration and spacing. The numerical simulations showed strong agreement with the experimental data, validating the observed behavioural trends. According to numerical case study, compared with conventional carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP), PLA exhibited lower mechanical performance but offered clear environmental advantages, with significantly lower embodied energy and global warming potential than commonly used externally bonded reinforcement material. While the present work is a proof-of-concept study limited to axial loading, the findings highlight the promise of PLA as an eco-friendly alternative for low-carbon strengthening applications. In future applications, combining PLA with conventional reinforcement materials may offer an optimized balance between mechanical performance and ecological impact.","PeriodicalId":13837,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Damage Mechanics","volume":"37 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":4.2,"publicationDate":"2026-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148379739","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
