Although power generation technologies such as unmanned thermoelectric generation (TEG), photovoltaics, microturbines, gas generators and low energy lighting such as LEDs have existed for several decades, commercial implementation is still in principal subject to cost-benefit studies performed as part of revamp and rejuvenation projects. A recurring challenge in such studies is to estimate and compare capital, operations, maintenance, logistics, manning and reliability costs while keeping an eye on what level of upfront capital expenditure is reasonable, given project budgets. This paper summarises such considerations taken during a revamp and rejuvenation project at an aging pipeline network hub platform. A decision on whether to install new equipment and technology or recondition and retain existing ones could then be taken in terms of optimal life-cycle cost, reliability and available project budgets.","PeriodicalId":138236,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Power Engineering and Optimization Conference Melaka, Malaysia","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121857925","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The problem formulation and the proposed technique are tested on a 28-bus Malaysian distribution system. In confirming the effectiveness of this method to determine the minimum power loss which respects to its optimal size and placement, the proposed population-based meta-heuristic approach is compared with the Evolutionary Programming (EP) method for validation and accuracy. The analysis is focused on the sizing impact when considering the cost factor without neglecting the importance to maintain the minimal loss. The results have shown comparatively the same with EP in terms of the computational efficiency. Significance of savings could be achieved while having a low investment of DG installation with a minimum power loss.","PeriodicalId":138236,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Power Engineering and Optimization Conference Melaka, Malaysia","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121789147","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This system is able to control these multiple motors at the same desired motor speed operation which provide advantages in terms of components and cost reduction. However, the system is not able to control each motor separately if it is desired to operate at different speeds and it also cannot withstand the load disturbance. To address this problem, the design of combined Vector Control-Direct Torque Control (DTC) methods is proposed and their performance is investigated for the case of independent controlled two induction motors fed by single Five Leg Inverter (FLI) method. Double Zero Sequence (DZS) Injection Method Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) scheme is used for the FLI. Simulation results from the Simulink/Matlab that verify the validity of the method are also included. The results show the ability of the proposed method to control motor speed independently under forward-reverse step speed command and load disturbance condition.","PeriodicalId":138236,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Power Engineering and Optimization Conference Melaka, Malaysia","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133146658","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since then, the congestion in the power system had brought serious problems for the utility in particular. If the problems are not handled with care, a grisly catastrophic event is waiting, thus an appropriate method is recommended in order to explore a new approach to solve congestion issue. In this paper, congestion management with the bee colony optimisation (BCO) technique in solving the congestion problems in power system is presented. The BCO has been used in IEEE 30-Bus Reliability Test System (RTS) Bus and IEEE 26-RTS Bus to validate its capability. However for the verification purposes, other optimization such as Evolutionary Programming (EP) and Particle Swarm Optimisation Technique (PSO) are also be used.","PeriodicalId":138236,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Power Engineering and Optimization Conference Melaka, Malaysia","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133196441","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are many ways to save energy in every sector thereby reducing the carbon emission and global warming. Qatar, in the Middle East has shown growing demand for electricity consumption. In Qatar, the energy consumption by 2020 is expected to reach 80,648GWh and the energy consumption for lighting alone is expected to be 15,323GWh. Lighting is used in many applications and it is one of the areas that offer many opportunities for improving the energy efficiency thereby reducing the energy consumption. This paper presents a case study on energy efficient street lighting system design for the roadways in Energy City Qatar. Simulation software DIALux4.9 is used to investigate the efficient street lighting scheme through the use of different types of lamps and highlights how the concepts can be visually compared, its cost effectiveness can be studied during the design phase in order for the decisions to be made prior to its implementation. The study has concluded that forty percent reduction in the energy consumption can be achieved with the proposed street lighting system design.","PeriodicalId":138236,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Power Engineering and Optimization Conference Melaka, Malaysia","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115333847","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It consists of four main circuits; they are a hybrid controller circuit, a charger circuit, a pulse driver and full bridge circuit. Its main energy sources are a PV array and wind power generation. In this research, a new technique to optimize the CTHD is by changing maximum voltage angle of the three level waveform that created by a microcontroller PIC16F627A-I/P and searched the lowest CTHD. This inverter is completed by stand by UPS, when the main power source fails, the battery can power the inverter and the microcontroller controls the UPS transfer switch. The result shows that for lamp load of 10 W, the lowest CTHD is obtained when the maximum voltage angle is 134°.","PeriodicalId":138236,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Power Engineering and Optimization Conference Melaka, Malaysia","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116428412","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Also, power plant operators are compelled to reduce emissions of pollutants during the generations of electricity due to the increased awareness of carbon footprint and its effect on the environment. An optimization is performed on one such scenario where a combination of solar energy, coal, biomass and bagasse are used. Minimization of the emissions and bagasse utilization are taken as multiobjective problem in this paper with combined use of coal and biomass along with bagasse. The problem is formulated as Bagasse Saving and Emission Reduction (BS&ER) power dispatch problem and the results of the simulation show that the combination of solar power and others fuels can reduce both bagasse utilization and the emission of pollutants.","PeriodicalId":138236,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Power Engineering and Optimization Conference Melaka, Malaysia","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129430894","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this method initially, fault data in each bus is collected and then the correlation coefficient (CC) which show the relationship between buses during system disturbances are calculated to identify two or three buses with the highest CC values. These buses are considered as the most sensitive buses in the system. The identified bus voltages are then considered as independent variables in the developed MVR model to estimate the other bus voltages. After selecting two or three buses that have maximum and minimum frequency of the calculated CC, Cp and Rp, the appropriate number and placement of PQMs is then determined based on the lowest value of the Cp and a suitable value of the Rp. To validate the proposed PQM placement method, the IEEE 30 bus test system and the 69 bus test system are used.","PeriodicalId":138236,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Power Engineering and Optimization Conference Melaka, Malaysia","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127236962","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
