Multimedia streaming services via hybrid networks, constituted by terrestrial wireless networks linked together by satellite, present major challenge in the management of network bandwidth. In this paper we propose a novel approach based on a packet level and a bit level FEC for improving the quality of service of multicast video streaming. We performed an extensive measurement campaign in an indoor scenario evaluating a statistical description of the bit error distribution for the terrestrial wireless link. We show that a bit level FEC can decrease the bandwidth wasting due to the application of an upper layer FEC only. Finally, we evaluate the performance of our approach in terms of recovered packets, bandwidth saving, and video quality.","PeriodicalId":137382,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Workshop on Satellite and Space Communications","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122495601","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Simulated annealing is used to optimize the footprint pattern. Since the far field pattern of an antenna aperture can be estimated from the 2-dimension Fourier transform of the aperture distribution in rectangular array, synthesizing process proceeds in the frequency domain. In many applications, the word length is limited for various reasons. Main reasons are the computational complexity and the system limitation. In this paper, finite word length control is considered for the practical considerations.","PeriodicalId":137382,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Workshop on Satellite and Space Communications","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122756010","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The SFN channel has always been a problem in mobile communication or broadcasting channel due to its huge delay spread. Generally, we suffer from multiple access interference (MAI) caused by the multipath channel and MAI becomes worse when the terminal meets the SFN channel. In this paper we present a receiver algorithm which performs adaptive channel equalization efficiently in the harsh SFN mobile channel with considerably low complexity. We will cover some methods for a chip equalizer implementation and evaluate their performances in a simple short delay channel and SFN channel. Also, effects of frequency offsets of the base-station (repeater) are investigated as a consideration for practical applications.","PeriodicalId":137382,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Workshop on Satellite and Space Communications","volume":"108 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127957376","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An alternative to using real data collected from propagation experiments is to generate typical fading time series making use of climatological characteristics as well as geometrical and radio-electrical parameters of the link. The aim of the study presented in this paper is to validate time-series synthesisers relying on an enhanced Maseng-Bakken model for temperate areas. In the first part of this paper, the basic principles of the Maseng-Baken model are recalled and the parameterisation of this channel model is discussed for temperate climates. Then, Ka band beacon data collected in European and in North-American areas are used: on the one hand to retrieve the input parameters of the channel models and on the other hand to test them with respect to long-term statistics. The results of this testing analysis constitute the second part of this paper.","PeriodicalId":137382,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Workshop on Satellite and Space Communications","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132007644","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Of particular interest is the average multipath power coming from scattering of electromagnetic waves from rough building surface. Method of physical optics was implemented to model scattering from rough building facades. The results in terms of time series of the received power are used to obtain statistics of multipath power for various roughness parameters of the building faccedilade and various elevations and azimuths of the transmitter. The system is characterized by the possibility of radiating the flux on the served region adaptively, in order to address more power in the zones suffering strong fades (i.e. where it is raining). Weather conditions and expected fades over the service area are assessed with the help of input data coming from the Meteosat satellite and the European Centre of Medium-term Weather Forecasting (ECMWF). Suitable mathematical models are applied, and an optimized distribution of power is evaluated. The paper shortly presents the work procedures of the system, and the performances obtained against an analogue ldquostaticrdquo system, that makes use of the same Front-End and of a climatology-based fixed distribution of power. Results derive from simulations of a 4-years period of work over the European territory.","PeriodicalId":137382,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Workshop on Satellite and Space Communications","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116844555","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents an overview on a possible mobility management (MM) architecture for BSM, where satellite independent access function (SIAF) for handover are defined over the SI-SAP interface to enable upper layer access to lower layers and to connect SIAF with the satellite dependent access function (SDAF). The MM architecture takes into account work currently being carried out in IEEE802.21, where media independent handover function (MIHF) is defined for interworking between heterogeneous 802 networks and between 802 and other terrestrial mobile networks through the support of three services for handover, namely, media independent event services (MIES), media independent command services (MICS) and media independent information services (IIS). The synergy of the IEEE802.21 MIHF with the BSM SI-SAP makes it an ideal reference framework for the development of the BSM mobility management architecture and for the harmonization of future integration between BSM and terrestrial networks.","PeriodicalId":137382,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Workshop on Satellite and Space Communications","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127083276","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
