The broadband fixed wireless access (BFWA) systems operate at high carrier frequencies, i.e. microwave domain. In this frequency range wave propagation is highly influenced by precipitation, especially rain. Feeding of base stations can be solved with fiber optic or e.g. with satellite. In this work satellite feeding is assumed, which avoids land demolition caused by fiber deployment, but its drawback is the precipitation attenuation of Earth-space links. Applying site diversity can mitigate rain attenuation effects; however, known site diversity methods are only considering downlink channel quality and during site diversity terminals do not consider decisions of each other. By site diversity when downlink signal level decreases below a threshold, terminal station can be assigned to an other base station, though in point-multipoint systems this base station re-assignment can raise uplink interferences at other terminals. Present contribution provides a special site diversity which adopts genetic algorithm (GA) to simultaneously optimize downlink and uplink SINR values in BFWA. A convergence analysis method of the applied genetic algorithm is provided using Markov chain model.","PeriodicalId":137382,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Workshop on Satellite and Space Communications","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131827011","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently, research efforts have been devoted to extend this standard for mobile usage. In this paper we consider a scenario composed of a Ku-band GEO bent-pipe satellite, a gateway and some mobile users. The interest is here in investigating the performance of a scheduling scheme to manage DVB-S2 resources on the forward channel for the delivery of video CBR and FTP traffic flows to mobile users. A novel scheduler scheme, called UBMT, has been proposed that aims to manage CBR packet transmission deadlines while maximizing the aggregated goodput. Simulation runs have permitted to validate the optimal performance achieved by UBMT in comparison with other schemes. The impact of different TCP versions has been investigated as well showing the good results obtained with the SACK option.","PeriodicalId":137382,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Workshop on Satellite and Space Communications","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122952087","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The WiMAX multicast/broadcast services (MBS) protocol stack is defined after a brief description of DVB-SH system specifications and multicast/broadcast services in WiMAX. Consequently, the symbiotic mobile WiMAX and DVB-SH architecture is presented and key issues are listed. A modified MBS protocol stack and the functional enhancements for the WiMAX MBS are described for better provisioning of DV-BSH services via mobile WiMAX where satellite coverage is not available.","PeriodicalId":137382,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Workshop on Satellite and Space Communications","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123008843","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, these last years have seen an increase in the number of DTN protocol proposals such as Saratoga or LTP-T. However, the goal of these protocols are more to send much error-free data during a short contact time rather than operating to a strictly speaking reliable data transfer. Beside this, several research work have proposed efficient acknowledgment schemes based on the SNACK mechanism. However, these acknowledgement strategies are not compliant with the DTN protocol principle. In this paper, we propose a novel reliability mechanism with an implicit acknowledgment strategy that could be used either within these new DTN proposals or in the context of multicast transport protocols. This proposal is based on a new erasure coding concept specifically designed to operate efficient reliable transfer over bi-directional links.","PeriodicalId":137382,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Workshop on Satellite and Space Communications","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123906987","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we analyse the performance of a lightweight DVB-RCS handover scheme which relies on a history of recent GPS measurements to estimate the terminal residual residence time within the current spot-beam. A geostationary vehicular satellite network is envisaged which is populated by two classes of terminals sharing the same resources: aircrafts and high speed trains. Mobility updates are periodically conveyed via SYNC bursts to the NCC which implements a threshold-based queuing strategy to prioritise handover requests and minimise the number of connections forced to termination. A first-order approximate analytical model of the network is proposed which is used to derive new connection and handover blocking probabilities. Results are validated through an accurate NS-2 modelling of existing DVB-RCS signalling mechanisms. It is emphasised that our handover scheme does not introduce any change to the signalling messages that are already laid out in the DVB-RCS specification.","PeriodicalId":137382,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Workshop on Satellite and Space Communications","volume":"245 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134209710","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
