However, weather patterns like fog and heavy snow fall limit the availability of FSO. Another technology providing similar properties regarding offered data rates and flexibility of set up is Millimeter Wave Technology (mmW), operating at several tens of GHz. In this case, heavy rain limits mmW link availability. A combination of both technologies has been proved to be very effective to achieve very high availability. This requires redundant transmission on both links, which results in loss of transmission bandwidth. In this paper, a bandwidth efficient switch-over between these technologies is discussed. This switch-over can maintain high availability without the loss of available bandwidth for unnecessary redundant transmission. The performance of this switch-over has been simulated for more than one year measured availability data for hybrid network of mmW link and FSO link. It has been shown that the availability with switch-over reaches the redundant link availability but it can increase the hybrid network throughput significantly.","PeriodicalId":137382,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Workshop on Satellite and Space Communications","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132717501","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The investigated radio link is an L- band terrestrial-satellite channel, measured on board of a moving vehicle in different environments (urban and highway), therefore the channel is effected by multipath/shadowing propagation impairments. As a first approach of the problem, the analog received power process will be transformed into a digital fading process in order to handle it as a two-state (fade/non-fade according to the given threshold) process. To correctly reproduce the high order statistics of the fading process an appropriate discrete time and discrete state homogenous Markov chain has to be selected. The order of the model influences its capability to reproduce the channel memory. With properly selected threshold, by transforming the analog fading process into a fading/non-fading digital process a Chi-square test can be applied to determine the order of the process. Our investigations are showing that the order of the two-state fade/non-fade process slightly depends on the threshold of separation the fade and interfade events. The results can be applied also to test the order in case of more than two states, when the quantization of the attenuation amplitude performed for multiple levels.","PeriodicalId":137382,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Workshop on Satellite and Space Communications","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132720214","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

IMS technology provides a SIP based open platform that enables operators to introduce multimedia applications quickly and in a cost effective manner. Although IMS is very well suited for terrestrial IP networks, it is challenged by high propagation delay satellite environment with low data rates to provide equivalent levels of quality of experience enjoyed by subscribers of circuit switched systems. In this article, we first provide an overview of Circuit Switched and IMS Packet Switched based call flows for mobile satellite systems. We then concentrate specifically on voice call setup time and show how Circuit Switched architecture provides significantly better performance. Lastly, we propose several advancements on SIP call signaling to improve the IMS Packet Switched call setup times.","PeriodicalId":137382,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Workshop on Satellite and Space Communications","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125907841","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the important aspects of ACM from a physical and MAC layer perspective is the choice of transmission modes to be used during the system operation that would achieve the optimal trade-off between the system complexity and performance. This paper deals with one such methodology of selecting the appropriate set of transmission modes (MODCOD subset) from a physical layer point of view for both DVB-S2 and extended DVB-RCS systems. Optimizing the achievable spectral efficiency with respect to implementation complexity has been the main focus of the proposed methodology. In particular, we show that subsets with 8 and 5 transmission modes provide best trade-off between the complexity of the ACM based system and the achieved average spectral efficiency for the forward and return link of the DVB-S2/RCS system respectively.","PeriodicalId":137382,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Workshop on Satellite and Space Communications","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130102758","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) are the predominant enabling technology. But location information provided by commercial GNSS is not secure, unlike what is the usual assumption. There are only few exceptions in the literature that present GNSS vulnerabilities. In this paper, we contribute the first detailed quantitative analysis of attacks against GNSS-based localization. We show how replay attacks against GNSS can have a significant impact: even against cryptographically secured GNSS instantiations, an adversary can manipulate the location and time calculated by victim GNSS receivers. We explain in detail how such attacks can be mounted, measure their impact, and discuss the effectiveness of possible countermeasures.","PeriodicalId":137382,"journal":{"name":"2008 IEEE International Workshop on Satellite and Space Communications","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127419152","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
