Connecting this kind of load to a typical North American distribution system can have quite undesirable consequences. The potential for disruption of other end user's sensitive loads is high. A typical distribution system will employ numerous switched capacitor banks and the system is always resonant at some frequency, frequently within the same range as that produced by an induction furnace. The power industry is accustomed to dealing with harmonic distortion and care is often taken to avoid resonances at a harmonic frequency, particularly, an odd harmonic. However, it is unprepared for loads that can inject nonharmonic frequency currents over a wide range of frequencies and can excite whatever resonance exists. The basic characteristic of the induction furnace load is described. Experience with an actual case study is also described. Several alternatives for addressing the problem are presented, including modifications to induction furnaces, reconfiguration of the power supply, and filtering options. This diagnostic method has progressed one step further with the introduction of the TNU on-line multigas monitor. Field demonstration has been in progress since June 1997 on a critical transformer of the Manitoba Hydro power system. On-line multigas monitoring has allowed control over the fault evolution. Summer normal and emergency ratings were lower than required. The alternatives considered to achieve the rating increase are discussed. Increasing the usable capacity by implementation of a dynamic real-time rating system was recommended. At the UHV Equipment Test site, DS surge and HSGS closing surge tests were conducted. Then, the very fast transient overvoltage (VFTO) controlling performance of the DS and the surge voltage level due to HSGS closing were confirmed. In the same tests, the surge level transferred into the protecting and controlling components were confirmed to be low enough for them to operate properly. The test pole consisted of slightly modified commercially available 550 kV AC and 800 kV AC gas insulated components. The components were SF/sub 6/-air bushings, an air insulated arrester, a SF/sub 6/ insulated arrester, a SF/sub 6/ oil bushing, disconnecters, bus ducts and conical spacers. Testing involved continuous DC stress (500 kV and 600 kV) lightning and switching impulse tests, polarity reversal tests and ultrasonic partial discharge measurements. Thermal cycling was performed during de load and went uninterrupted for more than 1 year. No internal breakdowns occurred during any tests. Visual inspection of the spacers at various times during tests and final disassembly revealed no visible flashover traces. Data collected over that time frame is reported in this paper for NCIs manufactured with 16 mm (5/8\") diameter and 22 mm (7/8\") diameter epoxy fiberglass rods. All of the samples tested utilized crimped steel end fittings for transference of the applied tensile load to the fiberglass rod and from the rod to the support structure. Samples with and without a polymer housing covering the core rod are included. The data includes time-load test results under constant load to failure and residual strength evaluations after the removal of a long-term time-load. The results indicate a very flat time-load curve under nominal conditions. An approach associated with experimental design is considered to construct diverse types of sensitivity indices, which serve as the basis for multi-attribute evaluating efficiency of control actions, and, therefore, for forming rules included in knowledge base. An example is presented to show the validity and efficiency of the approach. Therefore, for purposes of the guide, the electrical resistance of shoes is assumed to be zero. It is believed that the use of zero ohms is unduly conservative for electric utility employees working at job sites where workshoes are required and results in unrealistic work restrictions. Present day work shoes utilize a rubber-based compound in the outer sole of the shoe that is especially moisture and oil resistant. The electromechanical components were conceived and manufactured taking into account the existing 3000 V DC electric traction catenary keeping in mind the use of standardized components or using standard insulators normally produced such as ANSI TR-205 standard strength post insulators.
