However, diesel generators are expensive to operate and contribute to environmental pollution. The integration of photovoltaic (PV) systems into mini-grids connected to diesel generators has been proposed as a solution to reduce the reliance on diesel generators and decrease the environmental impact [1]. This paper presents a case study of a mini-grid connected to diesel generators and PV with battery energy storage system (BESS) in Lebanon. The study analyzes the technical and economic feasibility of the system. The results show that the integration of PV systems into mini-grids can significantly reduce the reliance on diesel generators, decrease the cost of electricity, and decrease greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, the study identifies the key challenges and opportunities for implementing such systems in Lebanon, including policy and regulatory barriers, financing constraints, and technical capacity limitations. Addressing these challenges will require a comprehensive and coordinated effort from various stakeholders, including the government, private sector, and civil society.","PeriodicalId":137094,"journal":{"name":"2023 6th International Conference on Renewable Energy for Developing Countries (REDEC)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116619060","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This has resulted in a high demand for cooling units, which contribute to significant energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Efforts to reduce buildings energy use and help in decarbonization of residential building in hot desert environments will be addressed in this paper. In many developing countries, the responsibility of selecting air conditioning units (AC) typically falls on the residential homeowner or tenant. Unfortunately, this often results in AC units being chosen based primarily on their cost, rather than their energy efficiency, despite the availability of higher-rated energy star AC units in the global market. To be in line with net zero emission (NZE), an inexpensive solution centered on energy efficiency for the AC unit’s equipment’s manufactures, builders, homeowners, and policy makers without changing building architecture or integrating renewable energy sources, but rather decarbonization of end users will be recommended.","PeriodicalId":137094,"journal":{"name":"2023 6th International Conference on Renewable Energy for Developing Countries (REDEC)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123374744","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the design of the energy management system (EMS) in the MG is not the same in these studies. The MILP algorithm defining an EMS with minimal LCE generates power flow distribution on real-time basis in [1] while in [2] the energy management depends on future load power profile and available solar power in order to make the decision. A Genetic Algorithm (GA) is used to minimize in parallel two objectives: LCE and MG costs. The battery usage cost is considered just in the study with non real-time EMS to make sizing more accurate while compromising computation time. The goal of this paper is to compare the optimal sizing of the MG components obtained for a real-time EMS and non real-time EMS in order to evaluate the sizing robustness and accuracy. A new modelling approach was used to allocate LCE and costs on an hourly basis, which allows to avoid specifying when MG elements replacement occurs.","PeriodicalId":137094,"journal":{"name":"2023 6th International Conference on Renewable Energy for Developing Countries (REDEC)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114296681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A residential villa with a total occupied area of 300m$^{2}$ in Adana - Türkiye - was taken as a case study. Using the “Design Builder” simulation program, the baseline conventional building energy model was created, and the hourly cooling energy rate year-round was computed. The various components of the mathematical model were coded using “Visual Basic”. The main purpose of this research is to determine the optimal combination between the area of the PV panels and the thermal storage volume using the thermo-economic “Hooke and Jeeves” optimization technique. Results show that 70 PV solar panels, 73 kW VRF unit, and 10.376 m3 of cold PCM thermal storage were capable of supplying cooling energy throughout the year without the usage of any auxiliary energy sources. The amount of electrical energy consumption was then reduced by up to 98%. Unfortunately, since the electricity tariff is highly subsidized in Türkiye, the feasibility study reveals that the payback period of this system is 9 years and 7 months. However, in line with the country’s energy policy tendency toward removing these subsidies and using the real production cost, the payback period turns out to be 4 years and 3 months, triggering shareholders to make further investments in similar systems.","PeriodicalId":137094,"journal":{"name":"2023 6th International Conference on Renewable Energy for Developing Countries (REDEC)","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132781712","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These converters are widely utilized in high-voltage DC transmission systems and renewable energy systems. The main goal of this research is to assess and compare the effectiveness of the proposed FCS-MPC approach with a classic method. The classic method includes PI controllers, for controlling the load and circulating currents, then a sorting algorithm for balancing the capacitor voltages, then a modulation technique. On the other hand, the FCS-MPC combine all these algorithm in one computationally efficient controller. The performance of the different methods is evaluated through software simulations in terms of number of commutations per second, grid current waveform quality, and the variance of the capacitor voltages. Finally, conclusion are drawn.","PeriodicalId":137094,"journal":{"name":"2023 6th International Conference on Renewable Energy for Developing Countries (REDEC)","volume":"90 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130997151","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper proposes a trading platform allowing participants to share their excess energy and fully harness their installed solar systems. To effectively encourage the exchange of surplus solar energy within the community microgrid, a novel allocation method and dynamic pricing strategy for Peer to Peer (P2P) energy trading among local prosumers is introduced. The allocation ensures efficient and reasonable energy allocation, profitability, and ease of interaction. Moreover, the dynamic pricing strategy ensures profitability for all market participants and incentivizes the market to adopt more solar systems.","PeriodicalId":137094,"journal":{"name":"2023 6th International Conference on Renewable Energy for Developing Countries (REDEC)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114558874","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the different types of microgrids, and the variables that changes on a daily basis throughout the year, we chose Deep Reinforcement Learning to be the control strategy behind our master controller. This type of algorithm will be able to adapt to any given situation and could be used in any microgrid when it reaches a sufficient level of training. We only need to accurately model the microgrid which will be the environment where the Reinforcement Learning (RL) agent can perform the training before it could be applied to a real-world microgrid. The results show that the RL controller gives better performance than a simple human-designed algorithm, even if using limited computing power.","PeriodicalId":137094,"journal":{"name":"2023 6th International Conference on Renewable Energy for Developing Countries (REDEC)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131885335","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
