This article reports on 33 pastoral leaders in 13 states who identified surprisingly positive experiences to go with the unsurprisingly negative reality of quarantine. It would appear that COVID-19, while brutal in its methods, naturally incubated reflection and positive growth in the lives of these pastoral leaders.","PeriodicalId":135435,"journal":{"name":"Christian Education Journal: Research on Educational Ministry","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115438671","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the time, we were envisioning ways that electronic media might support, supplement, and enhance the work of church and parachurch ministries. However, by Spring 2020 this topic gained unexpected urgency as the COVID-19 pandemic escalated. Suddenly, technology-based experiences became the primary delivery system for Christian worship and formational activities rather than a supportive auxiliary element. This unanticipated proliferation of media-based ministry efforts offered an unparalleled opportunity to investigate our assigned topic. In response to this unforeseen opportunity, we narrowed the focus of our special issue and began to solicit articles addressing the theme “Technology and Ministry During a Time of Pandemic.”Wewere interested in discovering answers to questions such as the following:","PeriodicalId":135435,"journal":{"name":"Christian Education Journal: Research on Educational Ministry","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127212835","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These challenges were felt sharply early on in New York, the location of the most severe outbreak in the East Coast during the first half of 2020. This paper explores how Evangelical churches in the New York regions of Metro NYC and Eastern New York adapted to these challenges and turned to technology to continue serving their churches. Through the use of qualitative surveys, 21 churches in New York shared how they shifted to continue to minister to their congregation. The research demonstrated that over 95% of churches surveyed engaged in digital discipleship, with half finding it to be effective for their congregation.","PeriodicalId":135435,"journal":{"name":"Christian Education Journal: Research on Educational Ministry","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124829690","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study explored how the church transitioned from in-person to online worship and conducted online children's ministry during COVID-19. Data were collected through interviews, observations, documents, and videos. Results illustrated the process of transition and exposed the positive and negative aspects of online ministry. Future ministry considerations are also discussed.","PeriodicalId":135435,"journal":{"name":"Christian Education Journal: Research on Educational Ministry","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128053902","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The following books and research reports represent recent thinking about the role of technology in disciple-making with some publications preceding the pandemic and others reflecting specifically on lessons learned through the pandemic. Davis, W. F. (2021). Rebooting.church: Digitally transform your church with ‘bits & bytes of salt & light’ to help spiritually transform a 21st-cetnrury digital world. (n.p.). In this self-published book, Davis casts a vision for the local church to fulfill the Great Commission by adding a digital church presence. In the first half of the book, he labors to defend the need for, and urgency of, engaging a digital generation in ways that are relevant to them. In the second half of the book, he leverages his technology expertise in software development and marketing to introduce practical ways in which the church can utilize technology for security, data-management, and outreach purposes. He explores the ways in which “virtual church architectures” can be built to serve one-on-one, one-to-many, many-to-many, many-to-one, and interactive purposes. He even discusses principles for gamification as they might apply to the church. In the final chapters, Davis provides a framework for building a digital church strategy.","PeriodicalId":135435,"journal":{"name":"Christian Education Journal: Research on Educational Ministry","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114159902","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
