In this paper, the authors continue to apply EBD on the case study. Based on the result of the environment analysis, the authors took the step of conflict identification. Through conflict identification, the authors found that the critical conflict of design and development of a journal focused web crawler system is “to identify the parsing rule to download maximum content within minimum time”. This critical conflict is also the root conflict, so later on by generating primitive solution to this critical conflict, the authors successfully solve the design task and reach its original design goal. Finally, through this case study by applying EBD, it displays that EBD can help designer find the critical conflict and generating the corresponding solutions.","PeriodicalId":135246,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 International Conference on Innovative Design and Manufacturing (ICIDM)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129495204","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A PES is generated from environment analysis, the first activity of EBD methodology. Conflict identification is the second activity in EBD methodology. A detailed systematic approach to identify conflict is missing in this activity; therefore, the proposed algorithm is intended to close this gap. The algorithm includes the following tasks: 1) construct a performance network, 2) identify active and reactive conflicts, and 3) identify critical conflicts. A case study in collaboration with Area Development Planning (a subsection of the City of Edmonton) is also presented in this paper. The case study is to demonstrate the use of the proposed algorithm to develop a total quality management system. The algorithm lays the foundation for solution generation, which is the third activity in EBD methodology.","PeriodicalId":135246,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 International Conference on Innovative Design and Manufacturing (ICIDM)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133949054","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the last 60 years, hundreds of books have been written on the subject and hundreds of webpages display information on how to be more creative and achieve innovation. Several North American and European universities offer graduated programs in creativity. However, building an effective and validated creativity training program is not without challenges. Because of the nature of their work, engineers are often asked to be innovative. Without aiming for a degree in creativity, could future engineers benefit from training programs in creativity? This article presents the conceptual framework and pedagogical elements of a new course in creativity for engineering students.","PeriodicalId":135246,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 International Conference on Innovative Design and Manufacturing (ICIDM)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133542408","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper investigates an online tool condition monitoring method using acoustic emission signal in milling operation. The flank wear (VB) is investigated as the system fault. The nature of faulty signals in tool condition monitoring (TCM) is time varying. Therefore time-frequency transformation is an ideal analysis tool for signal interpretation. Short-time Fourier transform (STFT), Wavelet transform, S-transform, the smoothed pseudo-Wigner-Ville distribution and the Choi-Williams distribution are used for signal decomposition and two-dimensional (2D) principal component analysis (PCA) is implemented for dimensionality reduction. A 2D correlation analysis represents the deviation of the faulty signals from the healthy signal and a curve fitting approach is used to find the tool fault. Experimental tests are used for validation and the efficiency of each time-frequency transformation method in the designed TCM system is evaluated and compared.","PeriodicalId":135246,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 International Conference on Innovative Design and Manufacturing (ICIDM)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124248528","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Aiming at the existing shortcomings of the distributed mechanical structural damage detection, this paper puts forward a new method by using distributed Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors combining an interpolation algorithm, and predicts damage region through the limited testing points to avoid the deficiency caused by a large number of detection points. On this basis, taking the thin steel plate with four fixed comers as the object of study, the experiment system is set up using some FBG sensors, and its results verify the feasibility of the method with the interpolation algorithm.","PeriodicalId":135246,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 International Conference on Innovative Design and Manufacturing (ICIDM)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122308789","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work, the free-form profile of flute shape is obtained based on the CAD/CAM simulation of end-mills and the corresponding inertia is calculated through discretizing the cross-section into a group of finite rectangular elements. The inertias with various flute shapes are calculated using the discretizing method. Based on the statistical analysis of various flute shapes, a power equation in terms of tool radius and core radius is proposed to calculate the inertia. This work provides an efficient solution of calculating the inertia of solid end-mill flute, which could contribute to predicting the static and dynamic behaviours of solid end-mills.","PeriodicalId":135246,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 International Conference on Innovative Design and Manufacturing (ICIDM)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121546966","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Companies can assess their success from different perspectives, including the overall innovation strategy at company level. This paper evaluates 56 success metrics through the course of product lifecycle (PLC), by considering the influence of the company's business innovation strategy. Data is collected by using survey questionnaires with experienced product development managers of 21 Canadian and Danish companies, mainly practicing in mechatronics and aerospace industry. Outcomes show no statistically significant difference among innovation strategy attributes. `Financial' and `market share' are the most important success indicators in early PLC with `product' and `process management performance' being more important in the late phase. Moreover, sets of success metrics are proposed during course of the PLC. These aim to guide companies in determining critical success factors and set ideal practices in measuring the success of their products.","PeriodicalId":135246,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 International Conference on Innovative Design and Manufacturing (ICIDM)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116531216","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cutting forces and tool life of passivated cutters with different cutting edge radiuses are measured and compared in plunge milling. The results show that, with the increase of the cutting edge radius, cutting forces keep increasing while tool life increases first and then decreases. When the cutting edge radius is 7.9 μm the tool life of passivated cutter reaches its maximum under experimental conditions. The unit cutting force per cutting area on the tool edge is adopted to evaluate the size effect of passivated cutters in end milling. The results show the effect size of tool edge is obvious when the cutting depth is less than the cutting edge radius. This effect is more significant with the decrease of the cutting depth.","PeriodicalId":135246,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2014 International Conference on Innovative Design and Manufacturing (ICIDM)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114065855","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
