From the theory, the first purpose of this study is to examine the impacts of intellectual capital (IC) and political connections on the efficiency of Malaysian general insurance companies. The second purpose is to evaluate the moderating effect of political connections on the relationship between IC and efficiency. We apply data envelopment analysis (DEA) to measure efficiency. Following prior studies, we employ Value Added Intellectual Coefficient (VAIC™) as a measure of IC. Using a panel dataset of 64 firm-year observations over the period 2008-2011, we find that politically connected insurers have higher levels of VAIC™ and efficiency. Our regression analysis also shows that VAIC™ and political connections are significantly and positively related to efficiency. The interaction term on VAIC and political connections is also significantly positive. One implication of this study is that it may provide some insight for Malaysian general insurers in managing their resources, especially IC as well as sources from political connections.","PeriodicalId":133038,"journal":{"name":"J. for International Business and Entrepreneurship Development","volume":"108 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124817924","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper seeks identification and application of relevant literature to the long-term potential of family businesses (FBs), particularly as they are handed off to successive generations. While much literature is biased in favour of the developed markets studied, i.e.: Western assumptions - commonalities are sought that would apply cross-culturally. The purpose of this paper is to provide a framework of managerial orientations as a comprehensive tool to enhance the survival of FBs in a competitive global economy that would serve as a framework for future studies. The paper draws upon strategic management, family businesses and firm performance literatures to formulate a model of entrepreneurial antecedents to long-term sustainability of the family based enterprise. The review of the relevant literatures regarding the possible strategies taken by FBs shows that there are numerous gaps with regards to the relationship between these strategies and firm performance - namely firm growth and survival. In addition, the review discovers that some of the possible strategies are observable both to internal and external stakeholders and could be addressed for corrective action.","PeriodicalId":133038,"journal":{"name":"J. for International Business and Entrepreneurship Development","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115487688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A total of 200 SMEs from the electronic and electrical sector, and 250 SMEs from food and beverage industries were chosen randomly. The results of this study show that entrepreneurial orientation dimensions (innovativeness, proactiveness, and risk taking) and learning orientation have a significant relationship with SMEs' performance. In this context, entrepreneurial orientation makes a significant contribution to SMEs' performance when learning orientation is considered as an investment and a key factor for SMEs' survival.","PeriodicalId":133038,"journal":{"name":"J. for International Business and Entrepreneurship Development","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125545083","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Intention to quit has been here studied in two folds: intention to quit organisation and profession separately. Individual, organisational, external determinants and outcomes for these two are identified from existing literature. It is posited that job satisfaction and organisational commitment have a circular relationship with intention to quit organisation and profession and these two phenomena relate to intention to quit invariably through almost all determinants and outcomes. Hence, it is proposed that by tactically inducing satisfiers and commitment boosters, organisations can benefit by handling if not eliminate such intentions completely that have severe effects on individual as well as organisational performance.","PeriodicalId":133038,"journal":{"name":"J. for International Business and Entrepreneurship Development","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121370402","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It examines the existence and scope of entrepreneurship education in the Sudanese higher education public institutions. Data were collected from a sample comprising five public universities by examining their curricula and surveying the opinion of a selected sample from these universities. Respondents were asked 25 questions in order to assess their perceptions about the existence and depth of entrepreneurship education in the Sudanese public universities. It was revealed that there was only one programme of entrepreneurship education in Sudanese public universities. Moreover, entrepreneurship courses were very rare and were not commonly offered by those universities. However, many colleges teach entrepreneurship within different courses. Further, it was found that the public universities suffered from a shortage of qualified staff in entrepreneurship education as well as a lack of a conducive environment for its development. Based on this it is recommended that entrepreneurship education be incorporated into the curricula of higher education institutions in Sudan. The process of its introduction should be gradual, starting with staff qualification and the improvement of the teaching environment.","PeriodicalId":133038,"journal":{"name":"J. for International Business and Entrepreneurship Development","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114058577","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

AHP is widely applied in supply chain risk management and project risk management. The application of AHP in risk management has not yet been explored. Risk management is an established and accepted process as evidenced by much research in this area and published regulations and standards. Despite this, decision making in risk management tends to be informal depending on intuition and marked by an absence of formal analyses. To see if AHP can be applied to risk management, a distinction between risk management and risk management decision making is made. Potential application in risk management is discussed. An example of risk management decision making problem is presented, to show how AHP structured a risk management decision making problem.","PeriodicalId":133038,"journal":{"name":"J. for International Business and Entrepreneurship Development","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122346655","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, a major drawback in applying AHP is that the required comparisons rises quadratically with the entities to be compared. In this paper, to resolve this limitation, a new approach is proposed. In the proposed model, the following ways for deriving priorities are suggested: i) decomposition of matrix method; ii) the geometric mean method. The finding in this paper shows that decomposing matrix method results are more reliable than others.","PeriodicalId":133038,"journal":{"name":"J. for International Business and Entrepreneurship Development","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133801214","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, little effort has been made in reviewing its applications particularly in higher- learning institutions (HLIs). Thus, this paper attempts to systematically review and critically examine the applications of the AHP in this context covering 33 empirical and conceptual studies published in the period of 1992-2013. The studies are examined on the basis of four specific dimensions: publication year, country of origin, integrated techniques that were simultaneously applied along with AHP and also the HLI areas wherein the AHP was applied. The systematic analysis reveals that the AHP was dominantly applied in measuring quality education of HLIs, faculty member evaluation, performance measurement, strategic planning, university choice and selection of university majors.","PeriodicalId":133038,"journal":{"name":"J. for International Business and Entrepreneurship Development","volume":"129 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-07-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114075408","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using data from the University of Sharjah's Executive Master's in Business Administration (EMBA) programme over 2000 to 2007, regression models were developed to determine whether the current admissions criteria and the students' profile variables could adequately explain graduates' performance. Results showed that English language proficiency, entry GPA and place of residence had the most significant effects. A comparison of performance was also made between various groups based on 14 precedent variables related to the students' profile and academic background to shed additional light onto the issue. The quantitative findings were discussed and related to previous research.","PeriodicalId":133038,"journal":{"name":"J. for International Business and Entrepreneurship Development","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-01-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127643125","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The perceptions of members of La Palma Island's goat cheese regulatory council and local goat cheese producers were gathered through interviews and questionnaires. Overall, the strong commercial potential of local cheeses is acknowledged; however, increasing costs of production are perceived as the main barrier to its further development. Further, whilst the importance of collaboration is clearly acknowledged, most participating cheese producers are currently not involved in any form of collaboration. In turn, the GCRCs leadership appears to be filling some of these obvious gaps, particularly in quality assurance and promotion of 'Palmero' cheese. In this context, some elements of the theory of collaboration were identified. The study's implications, as well as future research avenues will be presented and discussed.","PeriodicalId":133038,"journal":{"name":"J. for International Business and Entrepreneurship Development","volume":"252 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-01-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133091816","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
