Economic history does not repeat itself making economic systems ‘open systems’, and economic laws cannot be regarded as laws in the natural sciences. Therefore, we explore a different approach by taking critical realism as science-philosophical background, using transaction cost theory to cope with the unrealistic full rationality postulate of neoclassical economic theory. In particular, we use the scenario-method from the management sciences and use as the concept of ‘tendencies’, as developed within critical realism, as scenario-framework. To illustrate our approach we use the case of Sense Glove, a light, compact, and modular robotic hand shoe that was originally developed for cost-effective rehabilitation of hand paralysis, but which is now used to get a real sense of feeling objects in virtual and artificial reality.","PeriodicalId":132871,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Business & Economic Policy","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117240201","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Drawing on phenomenological interviews, this study probed the emotional experiences often refugees residing and already working in the UK. Utilising Gross’s (1998, 2014) model of emotion regulation, we analysed how refugees used emotion regulation processes as they adapted to their new work and social environments. Findings illuminate the unfamiliarity experienced throughout their attempt to navigate to the labour market, with racism and harassment challenging their integration. However, their accounts revealed resilience and persistence to survive under adversity, which helped them develop career adaptability and contribute to their profession. This study is significant because it extends knowledge of refugee integration and highlights the ways in which refugees actively fight to survive in their new environments, ratherthan emphasising on their deficits.","PeriodicalId":132871,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Business & Economic Policy","volume":"90 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122737296","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nineteen interviews were conducted with affiliates from government and executives in private organizations to provide expert perspectives on the labor supply chain from South Asia to the UAE labor-market and that of the plight of laborers. Three propositions can be advanced: P1: Labor migration from South Asia to the UAE is a voluntary relocation; P2: The labor-supply chain from South Asia to the UAE is based on a push or pull system; P3: The plight of these laborers lies in the complexity of the labor supply network from South Asia. The results show that the laborers are lured to their destination due to the economic, social, and political conditions that persist in their own countries of origin; however, for some, the anticipated success is never realized as they become victims of the debt bondage they incurred in their countries of origin prior to their departure to the UAE. This study extends the application of supply chain management to the labor supply; therefore, it broadens the scope of studies on this subject. The focus is only on low-skilled laborers without considering the condition of high-skilled laborers.","PeriodicalId":132871,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Business & Economic Policy","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128326265","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Transformed financial variables are developed to a bankruptcy classification measurement model using the confirmatory factor analysis, which is then refined to a four variable, logit bankruptcy model. The result shows that the model possesses high classification accuracy and relatively small differences in classification rates between in-sample and out-of-sample as compared to industry-relative analysis. As such, our findings help managers more accurately estimate bankruptcy risk and thus, have a better opportunity to take corrective actions early, enhancing corporate financial sustainability.","PeriodicalId":132871,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Business & Economic Policy","volume":"113 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124769652","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For years, the availability of the Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM), spurred on by aggressive marketing, has been the leader in the reverse mortgage market. Thousands of assetbacked reverse mortgages have been approved which has resulted in billions of dollars of equity being transferred from homeowners to lenders. At first glance, the concept of reverse mortgages seems simple. However, the process is complicated, has a myriad of accompanying regulations and potential pitfalls. This study will examine the benefits, potential harmful effects and overall feasibility of the reverse mortgage as it applies as a financial tool for a significant segment of homeowners.","PeriodicalId":132871,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Business & Economic Policy","volume":"74 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130491973","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper reflects on the landscapes of the modern organized markets where exchanges are the major operators, their features, the interplay of law and markets, and the legal and regulatory challenges. While there is no universally agreed boundary for stock exchange law, the three major areas subject to regulatory and legal influences include (a) its main objectives; (b) the exchange organization; and (c) the process of trading. Among others, an important source of legal and regulatory challenge in the wake of the global financial crisis is the changing financial market infrastructures (FMIs) that organized exchanges are shifting attention from merely setting trade rules and clearing members’ trades to becoming central counterparties (CCPs) as required by the regulatory authorities. Apart from implanting the new governance culture for organized exchanges acting as system risk managers, a rising focus of legal and regulatory changes would be on the recovery of any distressed exchanges for system resilience.","PeriodicalId":132871,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Business & Economic Policy","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130495893","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main objective of this work is the empirical analysis of the determinants of bilateral trade between Western Balkan countries and the most important partners through the gravity theory. We propose a particular gravity equation for trade, including basic and experimental independent variables. We made use of R software for the econometric analysis, considering a panel data estimator for the dependent variable. The statistical effect of the considered explanators is generally confirmed and the resulting adjusted R-squared is relatively high.","PeriodicalId":132871,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Business & Economic Policy","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114579448","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Given the importance of the sector in economic growth, there has been considerable interest in their efficiency. In Kenya, DTS have been reported to have low efficiency, with the average efficiency being less than one. There is limited empirical literature to explain the inefficiency of DTS. In view of this, the study sought to establish the effect of asset quality on efficiency. The study was anchored on Asymmetric Information Theory. The study adopted positivist philosophy and explanatory research design. The target population comprised 110 DTS as at 2017.The study used secondary data that was collected from the audited financial statements for the period 2012-2016.Data was collected using a document review guide. Data Envelopment Analysis methodology was used to generate efficiency scores. The study found that the DTS in Kenya have not achieved efficiency. The study recommends that SASRA should develop a merger policy to encourage the DTS to merge. The management should decrease staff costs and operating expenses by investing in advanced technological innovations in order to increase efficiency.","PeriodicalId":132871,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Business & Economic Policy","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128379852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
