Hot-Fire Live Simulation (HF-LS) training in real fire and smoke, using training buildings, vehicles, and equipment, has been the only available practice-based training format available, and therefore accepted despite its limitations. Virtual Reality (VR) development has provided possibilities for supplementing HF-LS training. However, hesitation exists, often because of doubt regarding the represented realism of virtual fire situations. This paper investigates how immersive VR supports cognitive processes and affects fidelity in firefighter training, compared with HF-LS. Data were collected from firefighter recruits, experienced firefighters, and instructors at a Fire and Rescue Service in Sweden, 33 persons in total, during VR and HF-LS training. VR experiences were compared with previous experiences of HF-LS. The results emphasize the current benefits and limitations of VR versus HF-LS training in relation to the support of cognitive processes and the representations’ fidelity.","PeriodicalId":131998,"journal":{"name":"2022 1st IEEE International Conference on Cognitive Aspects of Virtual Reality (CVR)","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117210858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The process is formulated as a game visualizing one of the daily life skills; shopping skills. It allows the user to select the products needed and pay for it, using a Head Mounted Display (HMD) and Leap Motion sensor for more immersion and realistic experience, to help them live more independent life. An existing cafeteria was modeled to be the training environment in virtual reality, and to have a pre and post assessment for results measure. Study participants were 11 children and adolescents recruited with certain criteria.","PeriodicalId":131998,"journal":{"name":"2022 1st IEEE International Conference on Cognitive Aspects of Virtual Reality (CVR)","volume":"310 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131112745","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While this is well known within academic literature, it is often difficult to convey to students how science and policy interact in environmental studies and social sciences. Negotiation simulations are an effective experimental learning tool to teach this to students. As the world is transitioning into a digital age, these negotiation situations can be simulated online in virtual environments using gamification techniques. This paper presents work on the virtual \"Phosphorus Negotiation Game\" (P-Game) that is currently under development at the University of Pannonia in Hungary and the University for Continuing Education Krems in Austria. The game is based on a live simulation and is now being digitalized with a frontend that is a virtual environment and a backend that is a smartphone application. In the game participants debate among themselves with prerecorded audio using rules of University Debating as a blueprint. The creation of this virtual game is presented in this paper, while also detailing the research question and measurement plan of the authors.","PeriodicalId":131998,"journal":{"name":"2022 1st IEEE International Conference on Cognitive Aspects of Virtual Reality (CVR)","volume":"162 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134356418","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there are insufficient evidence and conflicting conclusions about agency and self-location with various hand representations in literature. This study aims to explore the influence of hand realism on three subcomponents of users’ embodiment in virtual reality. An experiment was conducted with three hand realism levels to collect participants’ perception data. The results revealed the lower embodiment in abstract hand from the self-report and eye behavior, and the correlation between agency and eye behavior from integrating the subjective and objective data. This study brings new insights to users’ embodiment with virtual hand by subjective measure through self-report and objective method of eye tracking.","PeriodicalId":131998,"journal":{"name":"2022 1st IEEE International Conference on Cognitive Aspects of Virtual Reality (CVR)","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131200809","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
