A 40-year-old male patient had a 2x2 cm draining ulcer and 1x2 cm necrotic area in the scrotum for about a month. The patient was diagnosed with Fournier's gangrene. Septic shock and disseminated intravascular coagulation were absent. Computed tomography scan showed soft tissue gas in the scrotum but no gas in the retroperitoneal space or abdominal wall. Debridement was performed. Gangrene of the scrotum and necrosis of the testicle was also seen. Rothia dentocariosa was isolated in extracted wound cultures. He was saved after debridement and administration of strong antibiotics. This is the first case of Fournier's gangrene caused by R. dentocariosa in the available literature.","PeriodicalId":13190,"journal":{"name":"Iberoamerican Journal of Medicine","volume":"41 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88373541","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here, we present a case of maxillary sinus mucocele in a 20-year-old male who presented with diffuse swelling on the left side of his face. Provisional diagnosis of mucocele was made on a computed tomography scan, which was later confirmed on histopathology. The lesion was managed surgically with uneventful healing at 2 weeks and 3 months follow-up. Mucoceles are often misdiagnosed as cysts or tumours of odontogenic origin on the conventional radiograph. Delay in diagnosis can result in complications due to the expansion of mucocele towards adjacent structures such as the nose and orbit. Therefore, it becomes crucial to diagnose it appropriately with the help of higher imaging modalities so that it can be managed well in time.","PeriodicalId":13190,"journal":{"name":"Iberoamerican Journal of Medicine","volume":"6 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89381609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study therefore examined knowledge on effect of exercise on BMD in HIV-infected persons among health professionals. Material and methods: This cross-sectional survey employed researcher designed, experts - validated questionnaire to enroll 434 respondents. The reliability coefficient “r” of the questionnaire was 0.75 with 92% response rate. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to summarize and analyze the data respectively. The alpha value was set at 0.05. Results: Age range and mean age in years of the respondents were 21–59 and 35.88 ± 9.09 respectively; age group of 30–39 years predominated (45.3%). Males were in preponderance (52.4%), and most (74.4%) were married; while majority (54.7%) were nurses. Substantial proportion (54.2%) had less than good knowledge on the subject examined in this study. Significant difference (p < 0.05; p = 0.015) in knowledge on effect of exercise on BMD in HIV population existed among the professions. Post hoc showed that knowledge of the physicians (p = 0.001) and laboratory scientists (p = 0.029) were significantly higher than that of the nurses. Physiotherapists’ knowledge on this subject compared to that of other health professionals was statistically insignificant (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Knowledge on effect of exercise on BMD in HIV infected persons among health professionals was surprisingly below expectation, and therefore should be seen as a cause for concerned exercise scientists and public health experts.","PeriodicalId":13190,"journal":{"name":"Iberoamerican Journal of Medicine","volume":"100 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80737239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite advances in recent decades, patients continue to have major cardiovascular events and marked reduction in their quality of life. Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter Type 2 Inhibitors (SGLT2 Inhibitors) initially entered the market to treat hyperglycemia in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), however the discovery of the cardiovascular benefits in patients with HF, regardless of the presence or absence of T2DM positioned it as a new pillar in clinical management. In this state-of-the-art review resulting from a comprehensive literature search (Medline, Cochrane and EMBASE), we describe the impact of SGLT2 Inhibitors on mortality and rehospitalizations in patients with HF and we propose a therapeutic plan for patients with HF to maximizes the benefits.","PeriodicalId":13190,"journal":{"name":"Iberoamerican Journal of Medicine","volume":"24 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75880341","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In pregnant women, it is necessary to explore the emotional, social and physical aspects. Few studies in the Latin American population explore the quality of life of pregnant women. The objective was to establish the frequency of deterioration of the physical, psychological, social and environmental quality of life and to identify the associated factors in pregnant women residing in cities of the Colombian Caribbean who attended prenatal consultation. Material and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 509 pregnant women who performed daily activities and participated voluntarily and anonymously after signing informed consent. They filled out a form that explored sociodemographic and clinical characteristics and applied the WHOQOL-BREF scale, identifying the poor quality of life. Adjusted logistic regression was performed to estimate the association between quality of life (dependent variable) and biopsychosocial factors (independent variables). Results: The age of the participants was 26.8 ± 6.2 years. In 250 (49.1%) physical or mental deterioration was identified, in 281 (55.2%) deterioration of the social relationship and in 270 (53.0%) of the environmental relationship. Diabetes OR:6.01[95%CI:1.20-18.42], depression OR:4.71[95%CI:1-20-18.42], living in a rural area OR:2.96[95%CI :1.78-4.91], anguish with pregnancy OR:2.87[95%CI:1.65-5.01], financial problems OR:2.61[95%CI:1.54-4.40 ] or couple OR:2.60[95%CI:1.03-6.69], were associated with impaired quality of life (p<0.01). Being cohabiting, compared to being alone, and being a student/employee versus a housewife, were associated with a lower possibility of deterioration in quality of life (p<0.01). Conclusions: Deterioration of each quality of life domain was identified in half of the pregnant women and several biopsychosocial factors were significantly associated. Antenatal care protocols should provide guidelines for intervention on obstetric and non-obstetric factors that impair quality of life. It is necessary to highlight deficiencies in the exploration of the mental, social and environmental health of pregnant women.","PeriodicalId":13190,"journal":{"name":"Iberoamerican Journal of Medicine","volume":"47 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91254784","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These include micrognathia, glossoptosis and obstruction of the upper airway, typically associated with palatal cleft. PRS has also been associated with various ocular complications, including high congenital myopia, congenital glaucoma, and retinal detachment. Because of the clinical importance of PRS, it is critical to illustrate the features of the Robin sequence to clearly define its primary and secondary clinical signs. We describe a patient with PRS who developed keratoconus as a rare manifestation of the disease and its management.","PeriodicalId":13190,"journal":{"name":"Iberoamerican Journal of Medicine","volume":"12 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82463373","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our goal was to quantify the association between pain intensity and psychological variables. Material and methods: A cross-sectional study using convenience sampling was conducted at Universidad Europea de Canarias (Spain) between January 24, 2022 and June 10, 2022. In addition, adults and children with cLBP older than 13 years with cLBP for at least 12 weeks of symptoms were included. Finally, the descriptive analysis and the calculation of the correlation coefficients of the data was carried out with SPSS v.28.0. Results: We recruited 146 subjects (n=85 women, 58.3%; n=61 men,41.7%) aged 50.4 ± 12.21 years suffering from cLBP with a moderate pain intensity (7.02±0.188), kinesiophobia (22.79 ± 0.559), catastrophism (13.42 ± 0.897), anxiety (24.47±0.560) and the quality of life SF36-PF (65.65±2.291), SF36-PR (48.03±2.727), SF36-BP (33.14±1.566), SF36-GH (43.98±1.873), SF36-V (48.56±1.812), SF36-SF (61.39±2.353), SF36-ER (76.29±2.043) and SF36-MH (49.76±1.666). Pain intensity in cLBP patients was negatively and moderately correlated with SF36-BP score (Pearson's r = -0.561, p < 0.001). In addition, the main variable was negatively and weakly correlated with SF36-PF (Pearson's r= -0.395, p<.001), SF36-PR (Pearson's r=-0.433, p<.001), SF36-V (Pearson's r = -0.260, p = 0.006), SF36-GH (Pearson's r = -0.203, p=0.032), SF36-SF (Pearson's r=-0.215, p=0.024). and SF36-MH (Pearson's r= -0.203, p = 0.032). Furthermore, pain intensity showed positive and weak with kinesiophobia score (Pearson’s r=0.310, p<.001) and positive and very weak with catastrophism (Pearson’s r=0.136, p<.001). In contrast, there was not correlation between pain intensity and anxiety in cLBP subjects (Pearson’s r=0.025, p=0.794). Conclusions: Psychological variables were not associated with pain intensity in patients with cLBP. However, physical perception of pain was the only variable that remained moderately linearly associated with pain intensity.","PeriodicalId":13190,"journal":{"name":"Iberoamerican Journal of Medicine","volume":"25 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85715752","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
