It becomes apparent that, as the technology and the available tools progress, clouds will be tasked to support increasingly heavier workloads. Efficient ways of scheduling are therefore required in order to effectively utilize the available computing capacity. This capacity, of course, comes at a cost which must be balanced with performance requirements. Thus, the resource leasing system plays an equally important role as the job scheduler. This paper studies a scalable Cloud Computing system modeled around the Amazon EC2 architecture, with a workload model that offers fluctuating traffic characteristics. Different job dispatching heuristics were used in combination with gang-scheduling and job migrations. Also a complex resource manager was incorporated to maintain cost-efficiency. The system was studied through the use of a discrete event simulator in order to assess the effect of different workload configurations and resource leasing schemes on the overall performance and cost of the modeled system. The simulation results, present the advantages and disadvantages of the applied configurations and highlight that different or hybrid strategies are required to achieve the best balance between performance and cost.","PeriodicalId":131195,"journal":{"name":"2012 16th Panhellenic Conference on Informatics","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128709102","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Following a typical preprocessing stage that includes color to grayscale transformation, binarization using Otsu's automatic threshold selection method, morphological opening and decomposition into connected regions a minimum bounding rectangle is then fitted to each region. A measure of rectangularity is then used in order to filter out regions with low rectangularity scores from further processing. Finally, the contribution of each region to the accumulator array is computed using an appropriately designed kernel that models the uncertainties associated with the geometrical center and orientation of the region's minimum bounding rectangle. Comparisons performed on facade images taken with impaired visual conditions or with low accuracy sensors (e.g. thermal images) between the proposed method and other Hough Transform algorithms, show an improved accuracy of our method in detecting lines and/or linear formations. The proposed method is also used with success for image rectification through vanishing points estimation.","PeriodicalId":131195,"journal":{"name":"2012 16th Panhellenic Conference on Informatics","volume":"95 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128787785","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Demanding robotic vision applications in most cases require dedicated hardware for reliable operation. The designed system is based on a Cyclone IV Altera FPGA device that constitutes the main processing unit of the reconfigurable hardware and on a 32 -- bit Microchip PIC32 micro controller as a complementary processor. The main goal of this research is to accelerate image processing algorithms using only minimal resources of the custom designed reconfigurable hardware. The micro controller serves peripheral control tasks, relieving valuable resources from the FPGA device. Video images are captured using a CMOS image sensor. USB connectivity with a personal computer is provided using a FIFO-to-USB module. Operational tasks such as frame grabbing, image filtering and USB communication are integrated to the system by implementing custom-designed controllers in VHDL. Image processing functions are accelerated using a fully parallel pipeline which is described analytically. A host computer interface has also been developed in order to test the overall system in action. The system is evaluated in terms of resource usage and the advantages emanating from the proposed architecture are discussed.","PeriodicalId":131195,"journal":{"name":"2012 16th Panhellenic Conference on Informatics","volume":"234 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127530108","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It promises high data rates at a low cost. At the same time, video traffic has so far outpaced other traffic types in growth, making it now the dominant traffic type in wireless networks. In this paper we study the concept of Quality of Experience for video traffic in LTE systems, Since video users are more annoyed by unpredictable packet loss, rather than reduced video fidelity, we developed an adaptive video coding scheme that aims to improve QoE in LTE networks, by continuously adapting the video fidelity, in order to keep the packet loss at acceptable levels.","PeriodicalId":131195,"journal":{"name":"2012 16th Panhellenic Conference on Informatics","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127068499","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the same time, tutors are expected to develop the appropriate training content. In this paper we propose the combination of two techniques to make the above tasks more efficient. Firstly, we propose to use Learning Objects (LOs), for the organization of educational content. At the same time, ontologies are rich knowledge representation structures that can be utilized for modeling the domain concepts. We then present how we can take advantage of the ontological models for two very popular programming languages - that is Java and C - in an attempt to provide tutors with the possibility to better organize their educational material.","PeriodicalId":131195,"journal":{"name":"2012 16th Panhellenic Conference on Informatics","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127163680","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work, a FCM model is constructed to represent users' perceptions of satisfaction from Information Technology (IT) products, such as smart phones. A set of key factors, related with smart phone characteristics and functionalities, was first derived from the literature to construct the FCM model. Then, a questionnaire was disseminated to a number of randomly selected (current/potential) smart phone users. Users' preferences were converted into fuzzy numbers representing the degree of satisfaction, as it was expressed by individual users, from each corresponding factor. Strengths of causal relationships between factors were specified by calculating similarities/dissimilarities between these fuzzy numbers. The produced FCM indicates the smart phone functionalities and trade-offs which influence more the perceived user satisfaction.","PeriodicalId":131195,"journal":{"name":"2012 16th Panhellenic Conference on Informatics","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131394047","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The array implements a \"pixel\" of the display and is used to focus airborne ultrasound energy on the skin surface. The design of the array is optimized for high output so that the pressure field generated by the focused ultrasound waves excites the mechanoreceptors under the skin and transmits tactile information. The geometry of the individual transducer and the array are optimized so that the medium presents maximum impedance and the membrane oscillates with maximum deflection. Finite element analysis of the CMUT and the CMUT phased array is used to verify the SPICE results. Therefore the investigation of their effect on various aspects of business performance is necessary. This paper presents an empirical investigation and comparison of the effects of hard and soft ICT investment, and also of four 'traditional' innovation drivers (demand expectation, price and non-price competition, market concentration), on the innovation activity of Greek firms. In particular, we examine from this perspective four different types of soft ICT investment in ICT structures, personnel, skills and processes. Our results indicate that while in the innovation averse Greek national context none of the examined traditional innovation drivers have a statistically significant impact on the innovation activity of Greek firms, both hard ICT investment, and three of the examined types of soft ICT investment (in ICT personnel, skills and processes), do have such positive impacts.","PeriodicalId":131195,"journal":{"name":"2012 16th Panhellenic Conference on Informatics","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115088791","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
