Traditional designs have either handled this through Convergent block floating point technique (CBFP), which has memory, computation and latency penalties or through time consuming simulations. In this paper, we consider the special case of FFT design for OFDM transceivers. We exploit the Gaussian nature of OFDM signals to predict the bit-growth of the signal through the various stages of the FFT and propose a technique to scale the signal appropriately. Additionally, we investigate the quantization error profile and propose a technique to improve SQNR by exploiting the presence of null tones at the band edges. With the proposed techniques, the performance comes close to the CBFP design, with no increase in complexity compared to existing static designs. Simulation results illustrating the performance improvements of the proposed technique are presented.","PeriodicalId":130953,"journal":{"name":"2010 National Conference On Communications (NCC)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131132392","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on spectral representation of texture images under Fourier transform, rotation invariant signatures of orientation spectrum distribution are extracted. Peak Distribution Vector (PDV) obtained on the spectral signatures capture texture properties invariant to image and surface rotation. The PDV is used to measure the similarity measurement by computing sum of square distance between query and data base images. The method is applied to content based retrieval system with a database of over 1000 randomly chosen texture images from photometric texture database. Experimental results indicate that the new method significantly improves the retrieval rates compared with the Zhang's approaches while it retains comparable levels of computational complexity.","PeriodicalId":130953,"journal":{"name":"2010 National Conference On Communications (NCC)","volume":"94 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134303053","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The IEEE 802.11n is the latest amendment that aims to achieve throughput higher than 100 Mbps at the medium access control (MAC) layer. It defines two frame aggregation schemes to improve the efficiency over the basic 802.11 MAC layer. However, the IEEE specifications do not specify the scheduler for these schemes and it is left as vendor's choice. This paper presents a detailed simulation study of these aggregation schemes and presents a simple frame aggregation scheduler. The proposed method dynamically chooses the aggregated frame size and aggregation technique based on various relevant parameters.","PeriodicalId":130953,"journal":{"name":"2010 National Conference On Communications (NCC)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131381589","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For the transmission of a data symbol from the source to the destination, the relays cooperate with the source through the decode and forward protocol. All the links are statistically independent and undergo flat Rayleigh fading. Conventional instantaneous signal-to-noise ratio based selection combining at the destination chooses one link from the set consisting of the source-to-destination link and the N relay-to-destination links. However, this scheme does not account for the effect of the source-to-relay links in the error performance. To overcome this drawback, we present here a scaled selection combining scheme, which accounts for this effect through a deterministic scale factor. The end-to-end symbol error probability (SEP) of this scheme with binary phase-shift keying is derived in closed form. We also give a method of obtaining the optimum scale factor that minimizes the end-to-end SEP.","PeriodicalId":130953,"journal":{"name":"2010 National Conference On Communications (NCC)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127587564","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But, being traditionally designed for desktop computers, lecture videos have high video bit-rates, due to which viewing them on low network bandwidth connections like GPRS incurs long delays and high costs. In this paper, we propose a novel method for adapting lecture videos, to make them viewable on low bandwidth connections, at low cost. Our idea is to exploit redundancy present in lecture videos, such as non-changing presentation slides. We define study-elements within the video that have varying levels of redundancy and user-expectations. We send images at different intervals, such as one image every five seconds, according to the Study-Element involved along with continuous audio. In our experiments, we have found that for a video of size 432MB, our method achieved 97% reduction in size, that was better than that achieved by standard codecs for that video. Additionally, our method can be customized according to the level of user experience desired.","PeriodicalId":130953,"journal":{"name":"2010 National Conference On Communications (NCC)","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123706475","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
