The activities of cruising, yachting and coastal tourism shipping constitute the Greek market of maritime tourism. The aim of this paper is to estimate the economic impact of the maritime tourism industry on the major macroeconomic factors of the Greek economy. The Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) has been applied by several countries to estimate the economic impacts of the traditionally designated tourism related industries, as well as all industries participating in the tourist economy (Strathclyde University,2004), but not for the economic effects of special interest tourism, as maritime tourism. Up until today there has not been any application of the method in Greece neither for the total tourism industry, nor for a specific tourism “sector”. The investigation of the theoretical and empirical frames of maritime tourism in Greece as well as the adaptation of Tourism Satellite Account tables, are a preconditioned fulfilment of the research. Since the TSA tables require information with economic value, which is not found in the recorded data by many public services, primary research has been conducted in order to collect necessary data. The data obstacle became higher since maritime tourism is not an immiscible activity but a combination of other sectors that's why the overall estimation and evaluation of the sector demands data from different but related sources. The paper concludes by presenting the final results of the economic impacts of maritime tourism on the major macroeconomic values of the Greek economy.","PeriodicalId":130558,"journal":{"name":"Tourism and Hospitality Planning & Development","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122800810","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Understanding the motivations of volunteers would enable organisers to successfully recruit and retain volunteers. This research investigated the motivations of volunteers at the 13th Malaysian Paralympiad (a biennial national multi-disability and multi-sport competition) which was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in June 2006. The motivation of 301 volunteers was assessed using the Special Event Volunteer Motivation Scale. Factor analysis revealed five motivational factors: Purposive, Solidary, Commitments, Family traditions and Use of free time. Solidary (social interaction and personal growth) and Purposive (altruistic) were the most important factors. Gender differences were found on four motives.","PeriodicalId":130558,"journal":{"name":"Tourism and Hospitality Planning & Development","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129206986","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To this aim, a model of French tourist flows was constructed, split according to distance, modes of transport and a typology of behavioural patterns and calibrated for year 2000. By applying emission factors to each mode of transport the model yields GHG emissions. In a second step the drivers of tourism and leisure development were considered (demographics, the economy, security, technology, lifestyles) and their prospects for the future. These prospects were introduced into the model. It needed several iterations to obtain a picture of French tourism in 2050 that is compatible with the emissions goal and within which, what is deemed a socially acceptable level of mobility is maintained.","PeriodicalId":130558,"journal":{"name":"Tourism and Hospitality Planning & Development","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126899326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this purpose, a research model has been designed and tested for use in the case of BiH. The main backdrop to this model is based on a new, alternative tourism planning perspective (Tourism planning: a third way?) developed and designed for similar situations (Burns, 2004). The study proceeded by examining the institutions responsible for tourism development through the application of in-depth interviews, content analysis, personal communications, and observation. The findings of the study revealed that although the concept of tourism planning is well understood amongst decision-makers, it has, however, remained a theoretical precept rather than a practice which is implemented. The study has also revealed that the perception of tourism planning and development is devoid of new approaches in respect of the issues of sustainability and community involvement in the decision making process. Therefore, sustainability is not used as an integrated framework, and policies are made without including these two important dimensions, which are at the core of the Third Way model. According to the findings, the present situation can be attributed on the one hand to the political complexity of the economies in transition and, on the other, to the reluctance of the officials to commit themselves to a planning process which involves responsibilities and sacrifices.","PeriodicalId":130558,"journal":{"name":"Tourism and Hospitality Planning & Development","volume":"91 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130308366","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Delphi achieves a broad consensus that tourism will grow in the region despite outbound low cost flights. It predicts little change in transport infrastructure for tourism, transport policy or market values of tourists. It also records a lack of consensus about several dimensions; this is a reflection of perspective regarding sustainable development rather than a sectoral divide.","PeriodicalId":130558,"journal":{"name":"Tourism and Hospitality Planning & Development","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125056982","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results discovered that the majority of residents had positive attitudes towards tourism impacts in the case of York, England. Although respondents seemed to be well aware of the negative aspects, most of them did not resist the additional developments of the industry. Therefore, awareness of tourism's social and environmental costs did not necessarily lead to opposition towards the expansion of the industry. There exists a strong relationship between respondents' socio-economic characteristics and their perceptions of certain tourism-related issues regarding the research questions.","PeriodicalId":130558,"journal":{"name":"Tourism and Hospitality Planning & Development","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123690728","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In general, it is more difficult for women to access the profits coming from tourism. This is often due to social expectations regarding gender as well as social restrictions on women, which exist in the countries themselves. In the case of a sustainable tourism project working with the Akha, an ethnic minority in Northern Laos, the gender question was raised, but experts were rather unsure of how best to integrate women actively in the project. Those who had a stake in the discussion felt as if giving a more active role to women from an ethnic minority would disturb the traditional image of the culture and traditional gender roles which tourists long for. Ethnic women in Laos are thought to represent the traditional lifestyle, and to subsist in more passive roles rather than participating actively. The concerns surrounding cultural and social change were so strong that ethnic minority women, who were already benefiting from tourism through the selling of souvenirs, were excluded from sustainable tourism projects. The concepts of cultural conservation, rather present in the scientific and international debate about sustainable tourism, are, in this case, conflicting with the interests of ethnic minority women by limiting their involvement in such projects. The article argues that only if the question of gender equality is taken more seriously can these conflicts between global ideas and local interests, as well as possible ways to resolve them, become clear and understandable.","PeriodicalId":130558,"journal":{"name":"Tourism and Hospitality Planning & Development","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128224991","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
