During the pandemic, the Anatomy Department of the School of Medical Sciences at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) conducted online anatomy practical sessions using two-dimensional atlas images and pre-recorded demonstration videos, which were shown live during synchronous learning or embedded into our learning management system for students to learn asynchronously. Some lecturers experienced logistical and technical difficulties during the online practical sessions, which necessitated rescheduling. Given the limited online resources, the School of Medical Sciences, USM purchased the Complete Anatomy application (3D4Medical, Ireland)—a 3D anatomy atlas application—to increase the effectiveness of the online practical session. This article presents the basic features and benefits of using the Complete Anatomy application for practical sessions. We further share our insights regarding the use of virtual technology in teaching so that other institutions may learn from our experiences.","PeriodicalId":130340,"journal":{"name":"Education in Medicine Journal","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126542052","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study, conducted at the University College of Medicine and Dentistry in Pakistan, identified ways to increase the trustful relationship between teachers and students. Through a qualitative research design utilising an exploratory study method, one-to-one interviews were carried out with 10 medical students and 10 medical teachers. Data were recorded and transcribed verbatim, and codes and themes were applied using ATLAS.ti. Students revealed that a trustful relationship can be improved by enhancing teachers’ professionalism, accessibility, mentorship, empathy, and dedication, whereas students should possess emotional intelligence and conformist, fairness, affiliative, and achiever qualities to build trust with teachers. This study found that by working on these qualities, a trustful relationship can be improved between teachers and students.","PeriodicalId":130340,"journal":{"name":"Education in Medicine Journal","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117336068","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Medical students’ inclination towards AI in the medical field increases the probability of successful AI adoption and its value in the medical field. This study was conducted to evaluate medical AI readiness among undergraduate medical students. A cross-sectional study was conducted from March 2022 to April 2022 in a private medical institution in Malaysia. A non-probability purposive sampling method was used to enroll students and a questionnaire was distributed online via Google Forms. The questionnaire, captioned “Medical Artificial Intelligence Readiness Scale for Medical Students (MAIRS-MS)”, was used for data collection. The analysis included frequency tables, percentages, standard deviation, unpaired t-test, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) test. Out of 105 participants, 67.62% scored 53 to 83, followed by 24.76%, who scored 84 to 114, and 7.62%, who scored 22 to 52 on the medical AI readiness scale. The mean of the total score of medical AI readiness obtained was 75.04. There were significant correlations between age and study year with the ability, vision, and ethics domains of medical AI readiness. A significant association was observed between previous training with all four domains of medical AI readiness. Policymakers and the educational sector should set up more AI training centers to provide and introduce basic courses on AI. More AI courses should be provided to younger populations to engage in AI digital information earlier, thus enabling them to acquire more confidence in interacting with AI technology in the future.","PeriodicalId":130340,"journal":{"name":"Education in Medicine Journal","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114424381","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To cope with increased workload, hospitals had to increase working hours, reallocate vacation and study leaves and rotations. This impacted the physical and mental well-being of all doctors, particularly international medical graduates (IMG). We explored the differential impact on junior doctors working in a district general hospital. In a mixed methods study, we evaluated the experience and perception of junior doctors in a United Kingdom district hospital in the south of England during the first wave of COVID-19 between March 2020 and September 2020. The study was conducted in two phases: creating a questionnaire followed by an evaluation of qualitative and quantitative content. About 83% doctors in non-consultant grades responded and 37.8% were IMG. The study found that IMG were significantly more likely to experience stress when compared to UK medical graduates (p = 0.008). They were also more worried about contracting the virus when compared to UK medical graduates (p = 0.004). Both groups felt that their training and career progression had been adversely affected. Various factors could play a role in increased stress in IMG when compared to UK medical graduates. These factors included: adjusting to a new system, being away from family, exams and interviews being cancelled, and reports suggesting that members of the the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community were more likely to be affected by serious illness if contracted COVID-19. This highlights the need for additional support for IMG.","PeriodicalId":130340,"journal":{"name":"Education in Medicine Journal","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121765848","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The ability of the students to self-regulate their learning has been postulated for success. In this study, we aim to investigate the self-regulated learning level of nursing students at one public institution and identify the self-regulation aspects that warrant a remediation plan to be developed. A cross-sectional survey was conducted online. Active status students in one public institution’s Bachelor of Nursing programme were invited to participate in this study. The invitation was distributed online via social media and email, where they are required to self-administer the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (MSLQ) through Google Forms. Thereafter, responses from 63 students with a response rate of 64.3% were received. Most respondents are female (76.2%), Malay (74.6%), in year 4 of their bachelor’s study (33.3%), and in the lower household income category (69.8%). Most self-regulation aspects of the students have been found to be at a satisfactory level except for specific learning strategies. Participants’ characteristics such as gender, ethnicity, study cohort, and academic achievement were determined to have a significant association with a small aspect of self-regulation. Interestingly, household income is the primary factor significantly associated with almost all self-regulation aspects. Being in the lower-income category was predominantly associated with higher motivation domains. In contrast, being in the middle-income category was predominantly associated with better learning strategies and resources. Comparatively, this study indicates that nursing students achieved the highest level in 8 of 15 self-regulation aspects than other learner populations in Malaysia. Learning strategies which exercise higher autonomy and resource management are warranted. This recommended various approaches which foster active and collaborative learning to be implemented for the students to improve their self-regulation skills. Students, especially from the highest income bracket, are the most critical and thus require attention from educators.","PeriodicalId":130340,"journal":{"name":"Education in Medicine Journal","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123327147","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it was largely unknown how likely would medical students continue to adopt this form of hastily implemented remote learning solution after the pandemic ends. Using a two-stage partial least squares structural equation modelling approach, a study was conducted to develop a set of questionnaires to measure this intention and determine the influence of perceived benefits (5 items) and perceived ease of use (7 items) on the behavioural intention to continue adopting online PBL. The technology acceptance model was adopted as the conceptual framework of this study. Environment factors (11 items derived from PEST analysis, where P = policy, E = economic, S = social, and T = technology factors) were incorporated as the third independent construct in our model. A total of 149 Year 2 medical students participated in this study. Overall, the mean score for behavioural intention to continue adopting online PBL was 3.42 out of 5 (where 1 = most unlikely and 5 = most likely). Only the construct perceived ease of use had significant influence on the behavioural intention to continue adopting online PBL (path coefficient standardised β = 0.312; t-statistics = 2.960; p = 0.003). Perceived benefits and environment factors were not shown to have significant influence. In conclusion, as no strong intention to continue adopting online PBL was demonstrated in this study, conventional face-to-face PBL should be resumed until clear benefits of a carefully designed online PBL can be demonstrated.","PeriodicalId":130340,"journal":{"name":"Education in Medicine Journal","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134250984","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is the first study to assess the prevalence rates and associated variables for burnout and stress levels of medical residents in four Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries by combining the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) and Stress Overload Scale-Short Form (SOS-S) as assessment tools. A cross-sectional, quantitative research method design using an online survey. This online survey was distributed to second year and above medical residents training in tertiary healthcare centres in four GCC countries (Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman). Eligible residents (n = 16,686) were recruited via convenience sampling. Out of 2,886 respondents, 996 responses were excluded due to incomplete information. The data was collected from 13th September 2020 to 15th November 2020. Of 1,890 included medical residents, 961 (50.8%) were females, and the mean (SD) age was 29.5 (3.2) years old. Personal burnout prevalence rates were the highest, followed by work-related and patient-related burnout (98.4%, 97.8%, and 79.3%, respectively). Arab and Kuwait Board residents had the highest rates of burnout across all domains. Stress overload scores were high with 51.6% of residents at high risk for illness, with Saudi Board residents most likely to be at high risk and Oman Medical Specialty Board residents at low risk. Burnout predictors included: no access to a wellness programme (p = 0.000), longer shifts (p = 0.000), high personal vulnerability (p = 0.000), and intention to leave (p = 0.05). Our findings show that burnout and stress rates are high for GCC residents, suggesting a significant problem for residents to provide the highest quality of healthcare possible. Further research is needed to evaluate the efficacy of residency wellness interventions to address this issue.","PeriodicalId":130340,"journal":{"name":"Education in Medicine Journal","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122846054","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
