Inflammation of the testis and male-reproductive tracts may lead to male infertility. Objective: To assess seminal plasma IL-17 in infertile male patients and to evaluate its relation to the different seminal parameters. Patients and Methods: Fifty male patients with primary infertility were included in addition to 20 age-matched healthy fertile males as controls. The semen was analyzed half an hour after the ejaculation according to the WHO criteria, including sperm count, morphology, motility, viability, and leukocytecount. Seminal plasma levels of IL-17 were measured using the ELISA technique. Results: The mean seminal plasma level of IL-17 was significantly higher in infertile patients (2.42±2.43ng/l) than in controls (0.28±0.66ng/l). Also, the mean seminal plasma IL-17 level was significantly higher in patients with abnormal progressive sperm motility (4.0±2.73ng/l) than patients with normal progressive sperm motility (2.07±2.26ng/l). Conclusion: IL-17 may play an important role in the pathogenesis of male infertility associated with inflammation and infection of the testis and male genital tracts and it could be a good therapeutic target in those cases, but further studies are needed to determine the exact pathogenic role of IL-17 in male infertility.","PeriodicalId":13018,"journal":{"name":"Human Andrology","volume":"12 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81292509","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although food may have an obvious effect on sexuality in both men and women, its effect on female sexual function is usually underestimated. Objective: The current study aimed to evaluate the impact of food on various aspects of sexuality in women. Patients and Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out on 300 married women aged 20–50+ years having a regular sexual relation and eating different types of foods. We used a self-report questionnaire designed by the investigators. The questionnaire consisted of 21 questions that covered different aspects of female sexuality and its relation to food. Results: Most of the participants (63%) were in the age group of 30–39 years. The commonest coital frequency was —two to three times per week, which was suitable for 45.7% of the studied women. On the other hand, spontaneous desire was reported by 43% of women to occur —two to three times per week. Among our sample, 50.3% were exposed to female genital mutilation/cutting. Regarding sexual satisfaction, 47.3% reported being moderately satisfied and 38.3% were very satisfied and almost one-third of women (32.3%) can reach orgasm in more than half the times of sexual encounters. Among participants, 85% consider that the positive effects of food were increasing libido, increasing orgasm (11%), and prolonging the time of lubrication (4%). On the other hand, oils were found to decrease libido (31.8%) and have a negative effect on orgasm (36.4), while white meat was the commonest food to decrease lubrication (50%). Seafood was the most common type of food that improved husband’s sexual activity (78%) followed by nuts (25.3%). Conclusion: Our women sample believes that some kinds of food can positively or negatively affect their sexuality as well as sexual performance of their husbands.","PeriodicalId":13018,"journal":{"name":"Human Andrology","volume":"27 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81339765","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Isotretinoin is the treatment of choice for moderate to severe cases of AV, as it provides complete cure with minimal scarring. Males receiving isotretinoin are always concerned about its adverse effects, especially on their fertility potential. Objective: To study the effect of systemic isotretinoin on semen parameters and sperm ultrastructure of male patients treated for AV. Patients and Methods: This study was carried out on 40 male patients with resistant AV presented to the Dermatology Clinic, Suez Canal University Hospital. A total cumulative dose of 120 mg/kg of systemic isotretinoin was given to all patients over a period of 6 months. Computer-assisted semen analysis and sperm ultrastructure assay using transmission electron microscopy were done for all patients before and after the course of treatment. Results: After the course of systemic isotretinoin, a statistically significant increase in sperm concentration (million/ml), progressive sperm motility %, and morphologically normal sperms % was observed. By transmission electron microscopy, all sperm ultrastructural parameters and sperm structure dimensions were not significantly changed after isotretinoin use. Conclusion: Systemic isotretinoin in AV is a safe modality of treatment with no harmful adverse effects on semen parameters, sperm morphology, or sperm ultrastructure after 6 months of use.","PeriodicalId":13018,"journal":{"name":"Human Andrology","volume":"4 1","pages":"1-9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76256539","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Intralesional immunotherapy is a promising treatment that is able to stimulate a delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction to different antigens as well as wart tissue. This treatment is suggested to increase CD4 T helper 1 lymphocyte activity to destroy human papilloma virus. Objective: To measure the level of serum soluble CD4 (sCD4) in patients with anogenital after intralesional tuberculin purified protein derivative (PPD) injection. Patients and Methods: This study was carried out as a pre–post interventional study on 49 patients with anogenital warts presented to the dermatology clinic and the andrology clinic, Suez Canal University Hospital. Each patient was injected 10U (0.2ml) of PPD intralesionally in the largest or mother wart with 2-week interval till complete cure or six injections, whichever was closer. Serum sCD4 was measured before and after injection using sandwich ELISA technique. Results: Complete clinical wart recovery was obtained in 26 (53%) patients and mostly was after the sixth session (60.4%) of injection. Mean level of serum sCD4 was significantly higher after than before PPD injection (18.47±10.4 vs. 44.48±20.67ng/ml, respectively). Serum sCD4 levels were significantly correlated to clinical response rates, as the higher the level of serum sCD4, the more the wart recovery. Conclusion: Intralesional PPD injection is a promising effective modality in the treatment of anogenital warts. CD4 cells may have a role in anogenital wart eradication by PPD injection and significantly related to clinical response rates.","PeriodicalId":13018,"journal":{"name":"Human Andrology","volume":"404 1","pages":"1-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91141540","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Patients and methods: In this study, 104 males were included. They were classified into two groups: 73 patients with chronic hepatitis B without liver cirrhosis (group 1) and 31 healthy volunteers (group 2). Semen samples were analyzed using a computer-aided semen analyzer. Serum levels of follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, total testosterone, free testosterone, estradiol, prolactin, and sex hormone-binding globulin were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. PCR was also evaluated. Liver condition was evaluated by liver function tests and abdominal sonography. Results: Semen parameters were affected in patients. There was a significant negative correlation between semen parameters (sperm count, motility, and morphology) and level of viremia. Moreover, a significant negative correlation was detected between level of viremia and serum levels of free testosterone and follicle-stimulating hormone. However, a positive correlation was noted between level of viremia and serum levels of prolactin and estradiol. Conclusion: Hepatitis B virus may have profound implications on male fertility potential.","PeriodicalId":13018,"journal":{"name":"Human Andrology","volume":"119 1","pages":"106-109"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77460280","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
