Exact analytical formulae for phase distributions based on different phase approaches are derived and illustrated graphically. They find that the spectra are asymmetric under the following conditions: (i) the Rabi frequency must not be too large and (ii) the squeezing phase should be of athe order pi /2. Large asymmetries are obtainable, even if the three peaks of the spectrum are clearly resolved. An interpretation is provided by means of a dressed state analysis. It is shown that after sufficiently strong travelling-wave k-photon absorption (k=2,3...) a squeezed state of the radiation field is reached that is not a minimum uncertainty state. In this state the inphase and quadrature variances of the normalized electric field strength approach the asymptotic values k/(4(2k-1)) and k/4, respectively. With the help of an approximate Heisenberg picture treatment of a continuous mode field travelling through a broad-band k-photon absorber an analytical expression is obtained for the evolution of the squeezing spectrum in dependence on the degree of absorption. For intracavity multiphoton absorption the spectrum of output squeezing is investigated with the help of the usual Langevin equation approach. The technique of dynamical renormalization is used to generate a hybrid gauge which exists between the d.E and p.A gauges. The resulting truncated Hamiltonian including counter-rotating type terms has an interaction that couples the atomic inversion to the field intensity.
