A top view photograph of the actuator is shown in Fig. 1. The actuator can be seen as a square skeleton which has a lateral dimension of 300 p m . The moving parts are 1.7 p m thick and are 2 p m away from the silicon substrate. The actuator is allowed to move f 4 pm laterally from its nominal position. The actuator is composed of four parts: anchors, springs, body, and fingers. Four anchors attach all other moving parts to the substrate. The four springs are slender polysilicon flexures that extend from the anchors to the body, usually in a multiple-folded fashion. The body is the square frame that connects all other parts and provides mechanical rigidity. Two additional vertical cross bars extend from top to bottom to carry the sensing fingers.","PeriodicalId":129841,"journal":{"name":"Digest of the Magnetic Recording Conference 'Magnetic Recording Heads'","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121038057","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The technique relies on a pseudo-contact air bearing system which keeps the transducer in contact with the disk over a range of velocities. It is found that the readback efficiency decreases monotonically with frequency, showing a 3 dB loss at 40 MHz for the heads used in this experiment. A four section transmission line model has been developed to include the geometry variations in different areas of the head. Domain wall motion and rotational contributions to flux transmission have been included. The calculated efficiency and impedance values are found to be in good agreement with measured values.","PeriodicalId":129841,"journal":{"name":"Digest of the Magnetic Recording Conference 'Magnetic Recording Heads'","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116511955","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Calculated dependence of transition parameter, overwrite and nonlinear transition shifts on the write field rise time are shown. Model results are compared with measured values for a thin film inductive head at different write current rise times and varying disk rotational velocity, for fixed linear density and flying height. The theory has also been used to calculate the amount of precompensation required to reduce the nonlinear shift to near zero.","PeriodicalId":129841,"journal":{"name":"Digest of the Magnetic Recording Conference 'Magnetic Recording Heads'","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126492671","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using current, industrially available components, characterized to frequencies >1 GHz, data rate limiting factors such as bandwidth, write current overshoot, inadequate write field swing, write field rise time and excessive write field zero-crossing shift are investigated. From this, conclusions can be drawn about the maximum attainable data rate (in casu 16 MB/s). For the components used in this study, the eddy current damping in the yoke of the inductive write head turned out to be the major restriction in achieving higher data rates.","PeriodicalId":129841,"journal":{"name":"Digest of the Magnetic Recording Conference 'Magnetic Recording Heads'","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127509455","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Permanent magnet bias heads are increasingly superior to exchange coupling bias heads as tracks become narrower, because of the excellent off-track performance of the permanent magnet type. Increasing the sense current is one way to increase head output. However, the current increase raises the temperature of the MR element and degrades performance. An analysis of the thermal behavior of the shielded MR head shows that increasing the thermal conduction of the shield and gap layers, which are the main sources of heat radiation, and improving the crystalline properties of the Ni-Fe film effectively suppress the rise in temperature of the MR element.","PeriodicalId":129841,"journal":{"name":"Digest of the Magnetic Recording Conference 'Magnetic Recording Heads'","volume":"174 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131440910","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These heads are of the type used in quarter inch cartridge (QIC) tape drives, with a record gap dimension of 1.9 /spl mu/m and a written track-width of 33 /spl mu/m. The pole thicknesses ranged from 4 to 4.5 /spl mu/m with a 14 turn coil. The FeAlN pole material delivers sufficient field to the media surface to saturate 1.5 /spl mu/m thick Ba-Ferrite media (H/sub c/=1500 Oe). In comparisons to a head of identical design with CoZrTa poles, the FeAlN poles were able to deliver more flux to the media because of a higher head saturation onset current.","PeriodicalId":129841,"journal":{"name":"Digest of the Magnetic Recording Conference 'Magnetic Recording Heads'","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126571491","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two designs using different methods to define the read width (with and without inactive MR wing regions under the conductors) are fabricated and compared. The design with the wings is easier to manufacture than the other design, but it has some shortfalls that limit its cross track performance. The cross track characteristics such as servo capability and side reading range can be affected significantly by the design and sensor stripe height. A 3-dimensional micromagnetic model and servo calculations are utilized to understand the cross track behavior of the two designs and the impact on system performance. The influence of top pole curvature due to the underlying conductor topography in the read head on the cross track profile is also studied.","PeriodicalId":129841,"journal":{"name":"Digest of the Magnetic Recording Conference 'Magnetic Recording Heads'","volume":"43 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126764572","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Process advantages of a recessed over planar structure includes lower top pole topography, improved pole trim capability, and improved top pole composition uniformity. Coil and photoresist processing in a recessed cavity allows for multiple layers with lower resistance without increasing transducer Permalloy path length. Recessed trimmed design performance has increased efficiency with higher amplitude and a narrower pulse width along with improved overwrite compared to planar untrimmed transducers. The recessed basecoat design is explained, and compared to planar transducers using modeling and performance results.","PeriodicalId":129841,"journal":{"name":"Digest of the Magnetic Recording Conference 'Magnetic Recording Heads'","volume":"118 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114974200","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
