Studies of variations in genes among different groups of individuals in the Sri Lankan population have grown steadily during the past few years. These studies generate large amounts of genetic data that is important to study the occurrences of diseases that differ across ethnic groups. There is therefore a need for a central repository of this data. The SLGVD was created to fulfill this void. The SLGVD offers web based access to genetic variation information of Sri Lankan people. It would also be an important informatics tool for both research and clinical purposes. The database was designed conforming to guidelines issued by the Human Genome Variation Society (HGVS). In addition to variation data each variation is linked with the relevant entries of Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM), dbSNP and GenBank databases at the National Centre of Biotechnology Information (NCBI), USA. Genotype and allele frequencies of each variation in different ethnic groups are represented in numerical and graphical format. The SLGVD can be freely accessed online at http://hgucolombo.org/SLGVD.aspx . This presentation is on such a software system, currently implemented in two large private hospitals in the Southern Province and a few other medium scale channelling centres since more than four years. An unlimited number of consultants, categorised under their specialities, can be managed by this software. A single doctor can have multiple secessions for a day and each may have different attributes like the fee and starting time. The appointments are usually given as a serial number, but appointments can also be scheduled when necessary. The seessions are mainly changed by the day of the week. During holidays the sessions can be given a different set of attributes like an earlier start and higher maximum number of patients. The doctors’ leave allocations can also be managed by the system. Advance bookings, appointment cancellations, refunds, marking patients’ pressence, reprints, name changes are all possible on the very same screen where bookings are done. Several reports like doctor view, nurse view, session view, shift end summary, day end summary are available and the frequently used ones are accessible through the main screen. The software is fully customisable with various printer settings, paper settings and printing positions. The appearance, the way of navigation, and several other features can also be customised. Virtually, an unlimited number of users can take appointments seamlessly in a network environment. The security is also a main concern and different authorities have various levels of accessibility.","PeriodicalId":129773,"journal":{"name":"Sri Lanka Journal of Bio-medical Informatics","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114399361","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Diet and nutrition are closely related to general population health and the burden of non-communicable diseases. To maintain good health, nutritionally balanced diet with appropriate amount of energy is required. To measure dietary energy, quantitative food intake data are generally converted into nutrient terms and compared with a suitable standard, usually a recommended dietary or minimal dietary requirement. Presently, there is no standard method to calculate dietary nutrient amount in Sri Lankan food and most of the time it is done manually. Therefore, the aim of introducing this simple medically oriented software is to enable computerised assessment of calorie content in Sri Lankan food. The database of this software consists of calorie content and other data of food that is nutritionally important and consumed in Sri Lanka. It can be updated with latest data taken from the web or any other latest research to get the maximum output. Total amount of calorie intake for a day can be assessed when the types of food in a meal and their relevant quantities are entered to this software. It makes easy for the medical practitioner to find out whether the patient needs dietary modification in order to achieve a balanced diet with adequate calories In addition, this software is incorporated to produce a dietary plan for each type of patient according to the individual preference. So the patients can create their own dietary plan with or without the assistance of a dietician. In fact, this software can be used by doctors, dieticians as well as patients themselves.","PeriodicalId":129773,"journal":{"name":"Sri Lanka Journal of Bio-medical Informatics","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124626854","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mogli","doi":"10.4038/SLJBMI.V2I4.2245","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4038/SLJBMI.V2I4.2245","url":null,"abstract":"Introduction Healthcare system which is in the process of transformation to provide swift, safe and improved quality care is experiencing multifarious problems. In the process, the computer network is playing a very vital role and its implementation has contributed enormously but there are problems too, eg. passwords that are meant to protect computer network systems from unauthorised use which however may also provide a false sense of security. Some use easily guessed passwords, thus facilitating unauthorised access. Patient records are vital for patient care, but incomplete health records or misplaced information or mix ups with another patient’s record can result in wrong medication. In addition, if the records are in the wrong person’s hand, it can lead to a great hazard to a patient’s health. Why Biometric ? Biometric identification systems employ the use of biological data, in the form, of voice, face and signature scans. The most common physiological biometric include finger-scan, retina scan, hand-scan, and iris-scan. Biometric identification cannot be forgotten or stolen and involves the use of IT to acquire, analyse, store, manage and transmit genetic data. Since April 2009, in the US, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) require physicians and healthcare professionals who use Electronic Health Record (EHR) track to be tracked every time a patient's record is accessed. Generally, one could digitally authenticate a user with any of these authentication methods: “what you know, what you have, what you are or who we are” refer to what is unique about us, our physical bodies as human beings. Things like fingerprints, retinal design, facial shape, vocal wave, hand geometry and in the future, DNA. Authentication is referred to as 1:1 (one-to-one) matching. Ethics in health informatics Biomedical ethics address issues such as privacy and confidentiality, conflicts of interest, harm to patients and the nature of the relationships between the physician and the patient which need to be balanced between potential harm and benefits of use of IT. Bioterrorism and Public Health Biometrics is very helpful in two ways. Firstly, the biometric identification of terrorists can be distributed electronically to all potential risk areas within and outside the nation for preventive purposes. Secondly, it can help in detecting the disease and if effective, would substantially reduce the mortality and morbidity with the early warning system detection of surreptitious biological attacks. Conclusion Biometrics play a very vital role in not only in maintaining privacy and security of healthcare management system but also in bioterrorism and public health activities in notifying infectious diseases and controlling mortality and morbidity rates by linking with curative medical facilities. These days computers are frequently used in writing reports using software like Microsoft Word. In order to add some flexibility to computer aided report writing, a small software called medical report writer was developed. Patient details like name, age, sex, ward and BHT can be easily entered. These will be included in the generated reports. Every detail entered like that can be used later to trace the report or to be used in various statistical analyses. These will be included in the generated reports. After the initial set-up of the programme, writing a normal report is just a matter of a few clicks. For example, just select the normal CT Brain, and the format we have selected initially will be appearing. If the report is a commonly found abnormal finding, that can also be generated, for example, blood picture with reactive lymphocytosis. When the report is abnormal, what we can do it to click the relevant features from a list. After the report is generated, any change can be done manually. Checking the spellings and grammar is also available. A treasure is also available to be used when necessary. The complete report can be saved inside the programme for easy retrieval. Finally a print out can be taken or can be exported to Microsoft Word for further modification. The main advantages over using Microsoft Word include hassle free report saving, easier report retrieval, easier report generation and minimisation of naming errors.","PeriodicalId":129773,"journal":{"name":"Sri Lanka Journal of Bio-medical Informatics","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133508538","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
