Decision makers are in need of a holistic approach inclusive of several aspects affecting GSN performance, moving beyond traditional approaches that limit GSN analysis to a singular aspect, such as operational or financial performance. We argue that GSN health consists of four key aspects: operational, financial, collaboration, and strategic health. Using a network analytic approach, we propose a methodology to assess and visualize GSN health. We illustrate our methodology using a field study in the aerospace industry. Our contributions are multifold. Theoretically, we contribute to our understanding of GSNs as multimodal networks consisting of both technical and social relationships. From a managerial perspective, we provide a GSN health assessment and visualization framework that enables decision makers to identify risks, determine potential paths of their diffusion, and devise appropriate mitigation strategies.","PeriodicalId":129698,"journal":{"name":"Supply Chain Management eJournal","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126830232","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This ambiguity has raised concerns among academics and practitioners. Therefore, we empirically examine the impact of supply chain collaboration and inter-firm trust on logistics performance. We first explore a real tourism supply chain to specify main factors and propose hypotheses. We then statistically test the hypotheses using data from six cases and a survey of 109 firms. The results show that, by establishing joint activities with their partners, firms could significantly improve their performance.","PeriodicalId":129698,"journal":{"name":"Supply Chain Management eJournal","volume":"10 Suppl 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123664651","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Keywords were used to group these problems into naturally occurring categories. Nine types of supply chain problems were identified: conflict, delays, demand fluctuations, excess/unused resources, inaccuracy, insufficient resources, long tail, pricing, and security. These categories together present a comprehensive view of problems that typically affect different resources within the supply chain, and can be used to diagnose problems and to evaluate solutions.","PeriodicalId":129698,"journal":{"name":"Supply Chain Management eJournal","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129559867","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such bullwhips (amplifications of demand variability) can lead to mismatches between demand and production and hence to lower supply chain efficiency. We investigate the bullwhip effect in a sample of 4,689 public U.S. companies over 1974--2008. Overall, about two-thirds of firms bullwhip. The sample's mean and median bullwhips, both significantly positive, respectively measure 15.8% and 6.7% of total demand variability. Put another way, the mean quarterly standard deviation of upstream orders exceeds that of demand by $20 million. We decompose the bullwhip by information transmission lead time. Estimating the bullwhip's information-lead-time components with a two-stage estimator, we find that demand signals firms observe with more than three-quarters' notice drive 30% of the bullwhip, and those firms observe with less than one-quarter's notice drive 51%. From 1974--1994 to 1995--2008, our sample's mean bullwhip dropped by a third. \u0000 \u0000This paper was accepted by Christian Terwiesch, operations management.","PeriodicalId":129698,"journal":{"name":"Supply Chain Management eJournal","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114827704","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The supplier sells a product to the retailer, who faces a deterministic demand, and may offer the retailer two types of trade credit contracts: a “one-part” or a “two-part” contract. We mainly focus on how the two trade credit contracts influence the supplier's operational performance, and try to explain from the operational perspective why the supplier in practice is willing to offer these trade credits in most situations. We specify the conditions under which it is beneficial in improving performance for the supplier to offer the one-part trade credit, and reveal through numerical experiments that it is more superior in improving performance for the supplier to offer a two-part credit than to offer a one-part credit. Also, we will show how the supplier should set the two trade credit policies to make them more efficient. The sensitivity analysis is presented at the end of the paper.","PeriodicalId":129698,"journal":{"name":"Supply Chain Management eJournal","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114302394","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Prediction of potential failure points and overall impact of these risks is challenging. In this paper, systems thinking concepts are applied for modelling supply chain risks. The aim of this research is to develop a holistic, systematic and quantitative risk assessment process for measuring the overall risk behaviour.Design/Methodology/Approach - A framework for Supply Chain Risk Management (SCRM) is developed and tested using an industrial case study. A systematically developed research design is employed to capture the dynamic behaviour of risks. Additionally, a system based supply chain risk model is conceptualized for risk modelling. Sensitivity modelling results are combined for validating the supply chain risk model. Findings - The systems approach for modelling supply chain risks predicts the failure points along with their overall risk impact in the supply chain network. System based risk modelling provides a holistic picture of risk behavioural performance which is difficult to realise through other research methodologies commonly preferred in the SCRM research. Practical Implications - The developed framework for SCRM is tested in an industry setting for its viability. The framework for SCRM along with the supply chain risk model is expected to benefit practitioners in understanding the intricacies of supply chain risks. The system model for risk assessment is a working tool which could provide a perspective of future disruptive events.Originality - A holistic, systematic and quantitative risk modelling mechanism for capturing overall behaviour of risks is a valuable contribution of this research. The paper presents a new perspective towards using systems thinking for modelling supply chain risks.","PeriodicalId":129698,"journal":{"name":"Supply Chain Management eJournal","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-02-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126548102","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As SCRM can be responsible for loss or gain of profit, the ultimate goal of enterprises is to have resilient supply chains with automated decision making that can deal with potential disruptions. In response to this, ICT developments such as agent based systems, decision support systems, and data mining techniques seem to be a promising solution. In this research, our aim is to analyze the existing literature on these ICT developments and SCRM systems and to observe the patterns, abilities and limitations of the existing models, in order to develop an initial SCRM framework.","PeriodicalId":129698,"journal":{"name":"Supply Chain Management eJournal","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120950187","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We consider a two-stage supply chain with a single supplier selling its product to consumers through a single retailer. We assume that both the supplier and the retailer can improve the quality of their demand forecasts by making costly forecasting investments to gather and analyze information. First, we consider a noncollaborative model where the supplier and the retailer can invest in forecasting but do not share forecast information. Next, we examine a collaborative forecasting model where the supplier and the retailer combine their information to form a single shared demand forecast. We investigate the value of CF by comparing each party's profits in these scenarios under three contractual forms that are widely used in practice (two variations of the simple wholesale price contract as well as the buyback contract). We show that for a given set of parameters, CF may be Pareto improving for none to all three of the contractual structures, and that the Pareto regions under all three contractual structures can be expressed with a unifying expression that admits an intuitive interpretation. We observe that these regions are limited and explain how they are shaped by the contractual structure, power balance, and relative forecasting capability of the parties. To determine the specific value of collaborative forecasting as a function of different factors, we carry out a numerical analysis and observe the following. First, under noncoordinating contracts, improved information as a result of CF has the added benefit of countering the adverse effects of double marginalization in addition to reducing the cost of supply--demand mismatch. Second, one may expect the value of CF to increase with bargaining power, however this does not hold in general: The value of CF for the newsvendor first increases and then decreases in his bargaining power. Finally, whereas one may expect CF to be more valuable under coordinating contracts, rather than a simple wholesale price contract that is prone to double marginalization, the magnitude of the gain from CF is in many cases higher in the absence of quantity coordination.","PeriodicalId":129698,"journal":{"name":"Supply Chain Management eJournal","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126352443","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While researchers have proposed numerous factors believed to affect delivery performance, little empirical research has examined such factors using longitudinal data from real world manufacturing operations. This paper examines a list of structural, demand, and supply factors believed to impact delivery using monthly data on product assembly from a major manufacturer. We estimate econometric models that capture the impacts of these factors upon product line item fill rates. The findings provide support for several hypothesized drivers of delivery performance. Managers may benefit from the empirical approach and research findings, which identify salient variables that managers can monitor and adjust to ensure desired delivery outcomes.","PeriodicalId":129698,"journal":{"name":"Supply Chain Management eJournal","volume":"183 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-03-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124641353","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
