Co-polyimides not only exhibit high thermal stability ( T<jats:sub>g</jats:sub> &gt; 357°C), good optical properties (λ<jats:sub>cutoff</jats:sub> &gt; 327 nm) and hydrophobicity (contact angle &gt;91.4°), but also favorable solubility properties in both high and low boiling organic solvents. The fractional free volume of the polymers was simulated using molecular mechanics and molecular dynamics and correlated with experimental gas separation data. The presence of bulky groups led to high FFVs (&gt;17.8%) and the formation of large microcavities with diameters ranging from 5.48 to 5.72 Å, which efficiently increased gas permeability. In pure gas permeation experiments, the permeability coefficients of CO<jats:sub>2</jats:sub> and He for the 6FDA-FTPPA/BAFL (3:1) film were 41.48 and 79.38 bar, respectively, which were superior to those of commercial Matrimid and Kapton in terms of gas permeability. In addition, glass fiber reinforced composites were prepared by hot pressing process. The structure of the oligomer was characterized by FTIR and 1HNMR. The curing behavior of the blends was studied by DSC. Thermal stability and mechanical properties were also studied. The results showed that the introduction of appropriate content of FPEN-Ph could improve the reactivity of the curing reaction. TGA and DMA results showed that the cured polymers and composites had excellent thermal properties. The residual mass of FPEN-Ph content of 10% at 800°C was 72.4%, and the 5% thermal degradation temperature (T5%) under inert atmosphere was 530°C. The flexural strength of glass fiber reinforced composites was about 592.7 MPa, and the shear strength was about 61.6 MPa, showing excellent mechanical properties. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of the modified epoxy resin was increased by 19°C compared to EP with 2.1 wt% Ni/RGO loading. The tensile strength and hardness increased by 65% and 18%, the impact strength is increased by 10.053 KJ·m<jats:sup>−2</jats:sup> compared to EP, and the shear strength reaches 34.78 MPa for the Ni/RGO/EP with 1.7 wt% Ni/RGO loading. The optimal IL catalysts were determined to be [BMmim][BF4] ionic liquid catalysts, and the catalytic mechanism was investigated. Furthermore, the optimum process conditions were identified: the optimal amount of [BMmim][BF4] was 0.05 mol% based on DPC, the polycondensation temperature was set at 200°C for a duration of 3 h, followed by polymerization at 280°C for another 3 h. The composites were investigated for mechanical and viscoelastic properties. Scanning electron microscopy revealed excellent dispersion and good adhesion of FA particles with the matrix. The addition of FA increased the microhardness by 70% and the storage modulus (below glass transition) by 75%. The reinforcing efficiency was better above the glass transition, which increased to around 177% at 250°C. Nevertheless, it is still challenge to further improve the breakdown strength and dielectric constant of PI film. After the powders of Al0.5xNb0.5xSi1-xO2 (NASO (x mol%)) have been fabricated, it was analyzed that the effect of doping elements Al3+ and Nb5+ on the surface chemistry and microstructure of the NASO powder. And then a small amount of NASO powder was polymerized in situ with PI matrix material, and the effects of NASO on dielectric properties and breakdown strength of the NASO/PI composites were analyzed. The results showed that the introduction of the doping elements Al3+ and Nb5+ favors could be conductive to the formation of oxygen vacancies on the surface of the NASO particle, which improved the surface activity and chemical reactivity of the NASO particle. The PI matrix can efficiently capture additional charges and enhance the insulating characteristics of the NASO/PI composite by properly doping NASO fillers with specific defect concentrations. In the results the breakdown strength of 1 vol% NASO (1 mol%)/PI composites reaches 334.38 kV/mm, which is a 19.6% higher than that of PI. Because the traps in the fillers capture and suppress the carrier transport to enhance the insulating properties of the composites. The effect of monomer concentration on molecular structure of the final products has been thoroughly investigated. Cage structured polyphenylsilsesquioxane (OPS) and ladder-like structured polyphenylsilsesquioxane (L-PPSQ) can be selectively synthesized from the same starting materials at lower and higher initial monomer concentrations. Meanwhile, online infrared detector, React IR TM15 was used to monitor the real time variation of the concentration and characteristic absorption peaks of any intermediate products that may exist. Then, React IR TM15 coupled with 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) were used to monitor and identify the intermediate species during the reaction. Mechanism studies indicated that the condensation reaction of OPS and L-PPSQ both proceed through a T1 structure dimer, which was formed by the quick hydrolysis of the PTMS monomer. The distinctions between wet spinning and dry-jet wet spinning processes on the structures and properties of co-PI fibers were systematically investigated. The co-PI fibers prepared by dry-jet wet spinning exhibited smoother surface morphology and higher mechanical properties than those of co-PI prepared by wet spinning. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) results showed that the co-PI fibers prepared by dry-jet wet spinning exhibited highly oriented structure along the fiber direction along with a low degree of lateral packing order in the transverse direction. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) revealed that the radius, length, misorientation and internal surface roughness of the microvoids in the co-PI fibers prepared by the dry-jet wet spinning are lower than those in co-PI fibers prepared by wet spinning. Moreover, the effect of air layer height, as well as the heat treatment on the structure and properties of fibers during the dry-jet wet spinning process, was also studied. Pentaerythritol was introduced to construct intermolecular hydrogen bonds among polymeric chains, resulting in a three-dimensional network structure, and correlations between H-bonds and mechanic properties are discussed. Structures and mechanic properties of the polymers were characterized and analyzed. By investigation of molecular structure and membrane formation process of chemically modified and hydrogen bond-regulated polymer membranes, it was found that the modified polymer membranes retain the unique thermal stability, chemical stability, and good hydrophobicity of the POD rigid polymer. Additionally, hydrogen bonds not only significantly improve the overall quality of the membrane, but also play an important role in enhancing the mechanical properties of the membrane, as demonstrated in the highest observed of up to a maximum of 167.19 MPa. All of the prepared CPIs exhibited high thermal stability with 5% weight loss at temperatures ranging from 428 to 539°C in nitrogen, and glass transition temperatures ( T g s) ranging from 228 to 332°C. These PI films displayed a UV-vis absorption cut-off wavelength at 338–376 nm and transparency of 76%–89% at a wavelength of 450 nm. Both series of colorless PI films also showed low birefringence values of 0.0021–0.0100. In addition, the optical retardations of these CPIs were extremely low (48–220 nm), indicating low optical anisotropy of these CPI films.
