In order to correct for attenuation and avoid truncation of projection data, the use of asymmetric cone-beam imaging geometries for simultaneous transmission and emission data acquisition is being investigated. At least two detectors are required in order to provide sufficient cone-beam data. If two detectors are used, they must have opposite geometries, and the data sufficiency condition for the cone-beam geometry is such that when a detector rotates \"/spl pi/ plus fan-angle\", it should shift axially by a, where a is the detector size projected on the axis of rotation. By using Beacon/sup TM/ method, transmission and emission imaging geometries can be different. The \"Elefant\" (ELEctronics For Amplitude 'N Timing) Digitizer IC is designed to measure both the charge and the single electron time of arrival of sense wire signals from the BaBar drift chamber. By combining a FADC (flash ADC) and a TDC (time-to-digital converter) for each channel, the digitizer IC can be optimized and simplified, to achieve the physics goals required of the drift chamber while reducing the per channel costs of the electronics. The Elefant IC also implements portions of the BaBar trigger protocols to simplify the connection of the chip to the rest of the BaBar detector. Each IC contains eight complete independent channels. The circuit has been implemented in a 0.8 /spl mu/m triple metal CMOS process and fabricated in production quantity to fully instrument the BaBar drift chamber and are now in operation. Recent improvements in the spatial resolution of state-of-the-art tomographs may be compromised by patient motion during scanning, as these high resolution data will be increasingly susceptible to smaller movements of the head. We have developed an opto-electronic motion tracking system based upon commercially available technology that is capable of very accurate real-time measurements of the position and orientation of the patient's bead. These positions are transformed to the reference frame of the PET scanner. The crystals were grown by the Czochralski method and good results were obtained with x=0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 for Y/sup 3+/ ions and roughly between x=0.6 and 0.7 for Gd/sup 3+/ ions. Relative light yields measured for the Lu/sub x/(RE/sup 3+/)/sub 1-x/AlO/sub 3/:Ce crystals were 40% to 75% bigger than the BGO light yield and were comparable to the light yield of YAP:Ce. To obtain well defined delay values independent of variations in process, supply voltage and temperature, four independent delay channels are controlled by a common control voltage derived from a delay-locked loop (DLL), which is synchronized to an external 40 MHz clock signal. The delay values of the four signal channels and the clock channel can be individually programmed via an I/sup 2/C interface. Due to an automatic reset logic the chip does not need an external reset signal. A first version of the chip was developed in a non-rad-hard 0.8 /spl mu/m technology and the successful prototype was then transferred to a radiation hard process (DMILL). Already electric power, telephones and in most laboratories 10 Mbit/sec Ethernet is already part of the wall wiring. We can dream of having buildings wired for Gigabit Ethernet. The A/D converter chips used in the design provide 700 nsec conversion time and 25 MHz/32-bit parallel bus made of a twisted pair ribbon cable connected to a high-speed buffered PCI interface is capable of 100 MByte/sec data transfer to an ordinary IBM PC. The front-end of each ADC channel is equipped with an unipolar Baseline Restoration Circuit allowing use of AC coupling at very high signal rates (RF preamplifiers, HV decoupled signal sources like PMTs, wire chambers, etc.). The method is modeling scatter in multiple energy windows in reconstruction. However, what the performance and what noise behavior will be when using scattered radiation in reconstruction are the problems remaining unanswered. Here, the authors investigate the method of modeling scatter in multiple energy windows in the cases of few projection views. The system performance is analyzed by using singular value decomposition (SVD). For investigating noise behavior, the reconstruction is accomplished by estimating the variance of reconstructed voxel values. The effectiveness of using scatter in noise cases is evaluated by resolution kernel analysis. The results show that the improvements due to using scatter are shown in normalized mean square error (NMEM) of reconstructed images and the resolution kernels. Dual-planar cone-beam SPECT involves the use of a matched pair of cone-beam collimators on a dual-camera SPECT system. Each collimator has its focus in a different axial plane. While dual-planar data is best reconstructed with fully 3D iterative methods, these methods are slow and have prompted a search for faster reconstruction techniques. Fourier rebinning was developed to estimate equivalent parallel projections from 3D PET data, but it simply expresses a relationship between oblique projections taken in planes not perpendicular to the axis of rotation and direct projections taken in those that are. We find that it is possible to put dual-planar cone-beam data in this context as well. The rebinned data can then be reconstructed using either filtered backprojection (FBP) or parallel iterative algorithms such as OSEM. We compare the Feldkamp algorithm and fully 3D OSEM reconstruction with Fourier-rebinned reconstructions on realistically-simulated Tl-201 HMPAO brain SPECT data. We find that the Fourier-rebinned reconstructions exhibit much less image noise and lower variance in region-of-interest estimates than Feldkamp. Also, Fourier-rebinning followed by OSEM with nonuniform attenuation correction exhibits less bias in ROI estimates than Feldkamp with Chang attenuation correction. The Fourier-rebinned ROI estimates exhibit only slightly higher bias and variance than fully 3D OSEM, and require considerably less processing time. We conclude that Fourier rebinning is a practical and potentially useful approach to reconstructing data from dual-planar circular-orbit cone-beam systems.","PeriodicalId":129202,"journal":{"name":"1998 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium Conference Record. 1998 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium and Medical Imaging Conference (Cat.
