Initially the variation of electric field distribution around a typical water droplet in the sheath and shed regions as a function of contact angle is investigated. The effect on field distribution in presence of multiple droplets is explored by varying the number, the relative positioning and contact angle.","PeriodicalId":129127,"journal":{"name":"2011 Electrical Insulation Conference (EIC).","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128679690","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The case studies were conducted on polymeric insulators installed on 500 kV lines. All analyses were carried out with computer simulations, employing finite element methods to calculate the voltage distribution on the surface of the insulators, and the Rizk model in order to assess the discharge voltage of these components, with deposits of pollution layers. The article also presents a number of problems that occur with polymeric insulators, and which have led to the failure of these units, causing great concern to the electricity sector regarding the system. Important conclusions have been obtained, which contribute to the assessment of these events.","PeriodicalId":129127,"journal":{"name":"2011 Electrical Insulation Conference (EIC).","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116628527","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However; a crucial factor is the choice of the filling material in combination with the carrying matrix as well as the filling technology. Hence it is useful to develop a testing arrangement that allows one to perform a significant number of tests on different materials and enables a high voltage laboratory to investigate the strength under electrical stress levels that generate partial discharges. Therefore; a testing device in accordance to IEC 60343 has been modified to use a very common and easy-to-produce plate shape for specimens and to increase throughput. Also this device allows to detect gases or to change the electrical field geometry. This paper reports on experiences with different contents of nano sized silica particles in epoxy resin matrices. This is the basis for the development of new insulation systems to be used for a more effective design of high voltage devices like rotating machines.","PeriodicalId":129127,"journal":{"name":"2011 Electrical Insulation Conference (EIC).","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125836358","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The lower insulating performance of dry-air was compensated by moderate increase of service pressure and careful optimization of electric field within high voltage gas insulated switchgears (GIS). In addition to the insulating feature the different heat-transport characteristics of dry-air were also considered. The electric field distribution was simulated and compared with impulse test results on a compressed dry-air insulated integrated disconnector-earthing switch unit. The aim of development was to find a technically and economically optimal solution, which is equivalent to the SF6 gas insulated switchgear unit.","PeriodicalId":129127,"journal":{"name":"2011 Electrical Insulation Conference (EIC).","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128824469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

VE and thermal cycling tests are well understood and industry recognized test methods to qualify new or improved insulation systems. These are reliable test methods for comparing new insulation systems with service proven insulation systems. To develop a life curve, VE testing was performed at three different voltage levels and the acquired data was analyzed using Weibull analysis. A comparison was made between the PET-mica insulation system life curve and those of reference insulation systems. Results indicate that the slope of the VE curve for the new enhanced PET-mica insulation system is changed from previous systems of similar composition, indicating that the life of the insulation system will be comparatively longer and that life and reliability of large motors and generators using this system will be extended.","PeriodicalId":129127,"journal":{"name":"2011 Electrical Insulation Conference (EIC).","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129840384","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A high load current and high operation temperature accelerate the process of contact wear. Contacts erode due to the fact that under certain conditions the contacts develop a resistive layer due to hot insulation oil. As a major cause of OLTC failure, these defects might take place after some years of operation and their frequency increases with the operation time. Regular maintenance is applied due to degradation of the insulation oil. Dynamic resistance measurement (DRM) can be conducted during this maintenance to measure the resistance of the OLTC when it operates. The measurement results provide important information for assessing the actual condition of the OLTC. This paper aims to analyze the effect of test parameters on DRM results from service-aged OLTCs and describes the implementation of DRM in OLTC condition assessment. Two test parameters were selected for observation: the test current amplitude and the circuit resistance. Their amplitude was varied during laboratory experiments as well as on-site after regular maintenance. To quantify the various measurement results, an analytical tool using 4 performance parameters has been developed. Finally for interpretation, with the help of a three dimensional classification system which is presented in this paper, the actual condition of OLTCs can be identified during maintenance activities.","PeriodicalId":129127,"journal":{"name":"2011 Electrical Insulation Conference (EIC).","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129308098","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The findings are based on a vast body of published literature, as well as a study performed on insulators that were in service for up to 70 years. The insulators were tested for insulation resistance, dielectric strength, porosity and residual mechanical strength. The microstructure of the porcelain was analyzed using a scanning electron microscope. Significant differences in the compositional and mi-crostructure details of porcelain insulators were observed. The electrical and mechanical strengths of porcelain insulators was found to vary significantly from one manufacturer to another, with some aged insulators showing marginal changes and others showing significant reduction in these parameters. Glass insulators evaluated showed small reduction in their residual mechanical strength when compared to new ones. These differences should have significant impact on system reliability and maintenance procedures adopted by utilities.","PeriodicalId":129127,"journal":{"name":"2011 Electrical Insulation Conference (EIC).","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128075193","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is of special importance for polymers, since they do not possess self-healing properties. Thus, the accumulation of space charges, which is linked to ageing, proved to be a limiting factor for HVDC applications. The focus of this paper is the behavior of epoxy based nanocomposites with magnesium oxide filler material. Nanoscale magnesium oxide has already been shown to decrease the space charge density for high field strengths. Additionally, MgO-nanocomposites showed an increase in the short term dc breakdown strength for low filler concentrations. Base material for all samples is commercially available bisphenol-A epoxy resin. Transmission electron microscopy was performed to validate the particle size and dispersion and showed that MgO has an average particle size of 22 nm. Space Charge profiles were obtained with the PEA-method and compared to neat epoxy. The profiles were taken under dc field strengths between 10 and 18 kV/mm. To see the influence of temperature on the charge distribution, the measurement was performed both at room temperature and at 60°C. The field enhancement factor of both the neat epoxy and the nanocomposite for different field strengths and temperatures has been calculated. It turned out that MgO nanocomposites show overall better space charge behavior at higher field strengths and at higher temperatures, compared to the unfilled epoxy. Both the space charge accumulation and the field enhancement factor are reduced, when going to higher electric field strengths or temperatures. Possible explanations for the observed space charge behavior are given.","PeriodicalId":129127,"journal":{"name":"2011 Electrical Insulation Conference (EIC).","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122619192","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to obtain sufficient service experience of 380 kV XLPE cable systems and detailed failure information, both literature survey and internal interview with several TSO's (Transmission System Operators) in Europe have been carried out. Based on the collected in-service and failure populations regarding insulation, failure rates of 380 kV XLPE cable systems are statistically investigated with a confidence interval, regarding to some uncertainties. The calculated failure rates are compared with those from literatures. It shows that the results that the failure rates from the existing literatures are not suitable for 380 kV XLPE cable systems, because they are dominated by the failures from 220 kV cable systems. The most important consequence for TSO's is forced outage time, therefore these outage time caused by failures is also discussed.","PeriodicalId":129127,"journal":{"name":"2011 Electrical Insulation Conference (EIC).","volume":"349 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123365613","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
