This framework is characterized by a three layer data/knowledge organization: object layer, object-subject layer, and subject layer, where a database at the object layer and a knowledge base at the subject layer are coupled by virtual database patterns specified at the object-subject layer. Based on such an architecture, communicating databases and knowledge bases are organized and maintained independently but linked dynamically under specific subjects. Cooperative query answering can then be accomplished through tracing the behavior dependencies amongst cooperating objects under those subjects. To implement this approach, mechanisms of dynamic-classifications, deductions, focus transitions and goal rewrites are introduced. An experimental cooperative database system, CoBase, was developed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":129031,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Systems Integration","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129297674","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

CSDE is built for use in software development within the Columbus manned space program sponsored by the European Space Agency (ESA). CSDE is offered to the Columbus consortium as the main cornerstone in the software process. It supports a classic waterfall model as defined by ESA standard PSS-05. The main emphasis is placed on utilization of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) tools integrated in an objected oriented environment facilitating a 'plug-in/plug-out' paradigm. The paper addresses details of the kind of large scale projects that will be supported, the design and integration platform chosen, implementation of the integration strategy, as well as the importance of an object oriented approach. Furthermore, the importance of procurement, deployment, and support strategy is discussed.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":129031,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Systems Integration","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117230609","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is based on the integration approach, of coupling systems for dealing with traditional, descriptive data, with tools for the management of spatial data. Its key feature is the extension of the relational data model, to deal in a uniform way with both descriptive and spatial features of geographical information. The SQL language has also been extended in order to provide a uniform interface for processing both alphanumeric and spatial-geometric data. The architecture integrates the INGRES database management system for the treatment of non spatial data and the GEOTECH library for the management of spatial/geometric data. The article briefly describes the logical data model and focuses on architectural aspects of the developed integrated system, discussing the extended-SQL interpreter and query processor. An application of CARTECH to land resource management is presented and performances are discussed.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":129031,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Systems Integration","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115735959","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ATCCS is being acquired by the Army under the evolutionary acquisition concept. The classical system engineering strategy for system integration is to ensure interoperability of system components. This paper presents the concept of 'convergence' as a better method to ensure effective integration of software components in the evolutionary acquisition process. In order to achieve convergence of software products, the Army program manager must implement three management initiatives: accurate definition of system requirements; continuous evaluation (CE) of system development progress: continuous identification, assessment and management of software risk.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":129031,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Systems Integration","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131414378","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first viewpoint says that software production strategy should be explored in the context of a hierarchy of strategies spanning three tiers-business tier, project tier and process tier. The second viewpoint says that any software process can be managed through a six-step framework of defining, measuring, analyzing, controlling, modeling and improving the process. The third viewpoint says that much can be learned from the manufacturing industry on cycle time reduction. In particular, there are different approaches to save time in different time components-learning time, waste time, wait time, and repeat time. The fourth viewpoint recommends the use of the COSMOS model (H.T. Yeh et al., 1991), with its equal emphasis on activity, communication and infrastructure dimensions, to guide software production management.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":129031,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Systems Integration","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114392220","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An integrated security system protects information network systems from computer viruses, hackers and other computer crimes. For this purpose, the ISS requires three mechanisms: information secrecy, user identification and access control mechanisms. The information secrecy mechanism protects information against intrusion through 'non-gates' of the information network systems. User identification mechanism permits authorized users to enter the systems only at 'the gates'. Access control mechanism allows only the users with permission to actually access data. The author implements an integrated security system using an ID-based security scheme. The ID-based security scheme provides encryption tools and authentication tools Encryption tools are used for information secrecy, and authentication tools are used for user identification and access control.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":129031,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Systems Integration","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114535239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

CAMEL uses a hunting feature that enables the tracking of user logins. The approach towards software development is generative as well as declarative, through extensive use of toolkits and reusable software. The authors describe the essential ingredients of CAMEL. It is a fairly complex distributed application using a distributed database and distributed user related information such as preference parameters. Tools from RAPIDS toolkit, especially remote procedure call subsystem, n-party interaction subsystem, are heavily used to produce this application. It also uses many services provided by RAPIDS, such as name server, user information server etc. To maintain consistency of distributed data the application makes use of the 2-phase commit and 2-phase locking primitives provided by RAPIDS.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":129031,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Systems Integration","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122543582","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The skeleton of the PROOFS method is based on the use of the S-Cort method developed by SLIGOS. Nevertheless some additional developments of this method are required in order to satisfy the initial objectives of PROOFS project. This article deals with the insertion of a functional architecture specification in the current HDA design process described by S-Cort. To introduce such an architecture, the authors propose the use of ExSpect formalism and tool. This solution is presented through a case study (a teleshopping application) and as a result of this experimentation, some ExSpect formalism improvements are proposed in order to increase the suitability of this solution.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":129031,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Systems Integration","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1992-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124876049","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
