Each vehicle in some range transmits the relative distance between the vehicle and the intersection using seamless and real-time road-to-vehicle communications. The traffic signal decides the light according to the demand that is calculated using the transmitted data. Performance evaluations are carried out using the simulator including three intersections with traffic signals. This simulator uses the average idling time as a performance index, and examines the basic performance effect of communication range, and effect of performance function. Consequently, it is shown that the ADS scheme is effective in almost all vehicle densities, and, in particular, the ADS scheme shortens the average idling time more than by a maximum of 90% compared with the most basic conventional control scheme with low vehicle density.","PeriodicalId":129008,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 54th Vehicular Technology Conference. A situation in which there is some deviation on the user's distribution in the center cell, and the relation between cell size and capacity is evaluated. It is important to improve the capacity not only the reference cell but also the surrounding cells, when evaluating the capacity. By changing the cell-size, the result shows that the capacity can be improved by about 140 users especially in a center-focused distribution. Also, in the edge-focused distribution, the capacity can be improved by about 60 users. In addition, it is connected with the increase in the capacity by changing the cell-size even in the other user's distribution. The capacity increased by the effect of soft handoff. The larger the threshold was, the more the reverse link capacity increased. It is shown that the reverse link capacity is converged when threshold is about 6 dB.","PeriodicalId":129008,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 54th Vehicular Technology Conference. VTC Fall 2001. Given the distribution of the UMTS traffic and the attenuation between mobiles and base stations using any given path loss prediction, the uplink-coverage probabilities and call blocking rates can be determined for a realistic \"many cells-many mobiles\" case. Because of effects like \"cell breathing\" a precise calculation of in-cell and inter-cell interference is done simultaneously. Imperfection of power control is taken into account. This analytical model permits fast calculations in particular for large networks.","PeriodicalId":129008,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 54th Vehicular Technology Conference. VTC Fall 2001. Proceedings (Cat. Based on the algorithm suggested by the 3GPP for scalar channels, a maximum likelihood (ML) approach for vectorial channel estimation, to include also the estimation of the direction-of-arrival, is proposed. The performance of the algorithm is assessed by resorting to simulations in typical UMTS scenarios, and also by comparing the RMS estimation errors against the Cramer-Rao bound. The results show that good performance is achievable from low to high values of E/sub b//N/sub 0/, provided the path components are separated by more than 2 chips.","PeriodicalId":129008,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 54th Vehicular Technology Conference. This scheme generalizes Alamouti's (see IEEE JSAC, vol.16, no.8, p.1451-58, 1998) transmit diversity scheme (which works best for flat channels) to dispersive channels. We show how the transmit diversity (TXD) scheme of Lindskog et al. can be deployed in GPRS/FGPRS networks. A low-complexity receiver structure for demodulating Lindskog and Paulraj (LP) encoded signals is presented based on a combination of a novel pre-filter and a delayed decision feedback sequence estimation (DFSE) equalizer. This pre-filter is designed to simultaneously achieve three desired effects: (1) the effective baseband channel seen by the equalizer has half the number of taps of the original baseband channel; (2) the effective response of the baseband channel becomes minimum-phase; and (3) the effective baseband noise is whitened. An information-theoretic analysis is also presented to demonstrate the advantage of the LP scheme over other TXD schemes (e.g. over delay diversity). A burst format for transmitting LP encoded signals which is compatible with the existing GPRS/EGPRS burst format is also presented. Finally, simulations results are presented to verify the benefit of using the LP scheme in the typical urban channel of GSM/EDGE.","PeriodicalId":129008,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 54th Vehicular Technology Conference. 'Errors-and-erasures (EAE)' RS decoding is considered, where erasures are declared based on the joint maximum output and ratio threshold test (MOR-TT). Two classes of diversity reception techniques suitable for noncoherent M-ary detection are invoked, namely either equal gain combining (EGC) or selection combining (SC) and their related performance is evaluated for both uncoded and coded DS-CDMA systems. The performance of the proposed MOR-TT technique is compared to that of the ratio threshold test (RTT) and the output threshold test (OTT), as well as that of 'error-correction-only (ECO)' decoding. The numerical results show that when using EAE decoding, RS codes of a given code rate are capable of achieving a significantly higher coding gain than without erasure information. Furthermore, the MOR-TT technique outperforms both the RTT and the OTT techniques.","PeriodicalId":129008,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 54th Vehicular Technology Conference. VTC Fall 2001.
