He proposed a morphological classification of broadly conceived structures of the imaginary, which includes symbols, images, and myths that are specific to a given author or culture. Drawing on various disciplines, Durand’s work can be seen as a vast undertaking aimed at rehabilitating the imaginary. He sees the imaginary is an art of human intellectual life and an essential aspect of human nature. Dreams, symbols, and images together constitute a kind of “transcendental fantastic”, without which a human being cannot experience wholeness or completeness. The article argues that the works of Czesław Miłosz, in which images form veritable magnetic fields gravitating around a number of central poetic symbols, can be read as a practical implementation of Durand’s theories. The Promethean myth and the myth of Empedocles’s death were earlier addressed in Bachelard’s previous works. In Fragments d’une poétique du feu, he extends and supplements his earlier analyses. The article examines the interpretations of selected myths in Fragments… in the context of the evolution of Bachelard’s philosophy and his key inspirations. It also addresses the following questions: 1) what is myth in Bachelard’s late work? 2) which of his main inspirations (psychoanalysis, analytical psychology, phenomenology) are still strongly visible in his late research?","PeriodicalId":128140,"journal":{"name":"Prace Polonistyczne","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135508764","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Taking recourse to the works of Mircea Eliade and Carl Jung, Iwanek studies the role of archetypes and myths taken from prehistoric religions in the creation of the character of Holowacz. At the turn of the twentieth century, humanity faced war and destruction, which is why people started to ask questions about the meaning of life, God’s existence, as well as good and evil. When Nietzsche announced the death of God, and Weber wrote about the disenchantment of the world, Vincenz, an insightful observer of reality, began to create his life’s work, On the High Uplands, in which he presented an alternative to the trends that were popular at the time. The first volume, The Truth of the Ages, is set in a mythical space inhabited by humans who remain in constant touch with the sphere of the sacrum. Vincenz alludes to a wealth of myths to present the reader with alternative ways out of a seemingly hopeless situation. Creating the character of Holowacz, who encounters the Devil incarnate (Pol. Bies), Vincenz made numerous additions to the original story. His aim was to show a way out to a person who directly confronts evil. Alluding to the myths of paradise, the myths of origin, and heroic myths, Vincenz presents the reader with a “sacred story”, which may serve as a parenesis for people of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.","PeriodicalId":128140,"journal":{"name":"Prace Polonistyczne","volume":"154 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135560010","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
